We report the synthesis, structures and magnetic behaviour of two isostructural dinuclear Dy complexes where the metal ions of a previously reported monomeric building block are connected by a peroxide (O ) or a pair of fluoride (2×F) bridges. The nature of the bridge determines the distance between the metal ion dipoles leading to a dipolar coupling in the peroxido bridged compound of only ca. 70 % of that in the bis-fluorido bridged dimer.

We report three structurally related single ion Dy compounds using the pentadentate ligand 2,6-bis((E)-1-(2-(pyridin-2-yl)-hydrazineylidene)ethyl)pyridine (H dapp) [Dy(H dapp)(NO ) ]NO (1), [Dy(H dapp)(OAc) ]Cl (2) and [Dy(H dapp)(NO ) ]Cl (NO ) (3). The (H dapp) occupies a helical twisted pentagonal equatorial arrangement with two anionic ligands in the axial positions. Further influence on the electronic and magnetic structure is provided by a closely associated counterion interacting with the central N-H group of the (H dapp).

A combined experimental and theoretical study on molecular junctions with asymmetry in both the electrode type and in the anchoring group type is presented. A scanning tunnelling microscope is used to create the "asymmetric" Au-S-(CH )n-COOH-graphene molecular junctions and determine their conductance. The measurements are combined with electron transport calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) to analyze the electrical conductance and its length attenuation factor from a series of junctions of different molecular length (n).

Tetraoxolene radical-bridged lanthanide SMM systems were prepared for the first time by reduction of the respective neutral compounds. Magnetic measurements reveal the profound influence of the radical center on magnetic behavior. Strong magnetic couplings are revealed in the radical species, which switch on SMM behavior under zero applied field for Dy and Tb compounds.

The structural investigation of cellular membranes requires access to model systems where the molecular complexity is representative of the cellular environment and that allow for the exploitation of structural techniques. Neutron scattering, and in particular neutron diffraction can provide unique and detailed information on the structure of lipid membranes. However, deuterated samples are desirable to fully exploit this powerful method.

It has been questioned as to whether polyplexes in the cytoplasm can reach the nuclear compartment and if so in what form. By applying atomic force microscopy (AFM) to the nuclear envelope and the nuclear pore complexes, we demonstrate that disposition of polyethylenimine (PEI)/DNA polyplexes that were microinjected into the oocytes of Xenopus laevis, as an example of a non-dividing cell, is exclusive to the nuclear pore complex (NPC). AFM images show NPCs clogged only with sub-50nm polyplexes.

Direct electrochemistry of cytochrome P450 containing systems has primarily focused on investigating enzymes from microbes and animals for bio-sensing applications. Plant P450s receive electrons from NADPH P450 oxidoreductase (POR) to orchestrate the bio-synthesis of a plethora of commercially valuable compounds. In this report, full length CYP79A1, CYP71E1 and POR of the dhurrin pathway in Sorghum bicolor were reconstituted individually in nanoscale lipid patches, "nanodiscs", and directly immobilized on unmodified gold electrodes.

Drugs that increase monoamine neurotransmission are effective in both anxiety and depression. The therapeutic effects of monoamine-based antidepressant drugs may involve indirect effects on neurotransmission through α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid glutamate receptors (AMPAR). Thus, chronic antidepressant treatment increases AMPAR-mediated neurotransmission and AMPAR-positive allosteric modulators have shown antidepressant-like efficacy in rodents.

PAMAM (polyamidoamine) dendrimers are promising in biomedical applications that can interact with both the bilayer and . Here we employed giant unilamellar vesicles (GUVs) of two different charge densities to study the effect of albumin, one of the major in blood plasma, on the interactions between PAMAM dendrimers and membranes. The results show that albumin exacerbates the effect of dendrimers on the destabilization of the vesicles in terms of leakage, aggregation and collapse in particular for negatively charged vesicles while neutrally charged membranes are not affected.

Soluble in the extracellular matrix experience a crowded environment. However, most of the biophysical studies performed to date have focused on concentrations within the dilute regime (well below the mM range). Here, we systematically studied the interaction of model cell membrane systems (giant unilamellar vesicles and supported bilayers) with soluble globular , bovine serum albumin, and lysozyme at physiologically relevant concentrations.

Skeletal muscle transport of lactate and pyruvate was studied in primary cultures of rat myotubes, applying the pH-sensitive fluorescent indicator 2', 7'-bis(carboxyethyl)-5(6)-carboxyfluorescein. The initial rate of decrease in intracellular pH (pHi) upon lactate or pyruvate incubation was used to determine total transport (carrier mediated and diffusion). Both lactate and pyruvate transport could be inhibited by a combination of 0.
