Familial Adult Myoclonic Epilepsy (FAME) is characterised by cortical myoclonic tremor usually from the second decade of life and overt myoclonic or generalised tonic-clonic seizures. Four independent loci have been implicated in FAME on chromosomes (chr) 2, 3, 5 and 8. Using whole genome sequencing and repeat primed PCR, we provide evidence that chr2-linked FAME (FAME2) is caused by an expansion of an ATTTC pentamer within the first intron of STARD7.

Article Synopsis
  • Atmospheric pollution significantly affects human health and the environment, leading to the use of biomonitors like the epiphytic plant Tillandsia usneoides to assess air quality in areas impacted by former mining activities in Southeast Spain.
  • The study involved placing these plants at five different locations from a mining area to urban and coastal zones, collecting samples every two months over a year to analyze metal(loid) concentrations and compare them against regional geochemical backgrounds.
  • Results revealed significant enrichment of harmful elements in the plants, with slower dust deposition rates in urban and coastal areas, suggesting Tillandsia usneoides can effectively trace atmospheric pollution sources and improve understanding of how plants absorb pollutants.

Anaplastic oligodendroglioma (AO), IDH-mutant and 1p/19q codeleted (IDHmut+/1p19qcodel), is a high-grade glioma with only limited prognostic markers. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate, by immunohistochemistry, the prognostic value of two proliferation markers, MCM6 and Ki-67, in a large series of IDHmut+/1p19qcodel AO included in the POLA ("Prise en charge des Oligodendrogliomes Anaplasiques") French national multicenter network. We additionally examined the transcriptome obtained from this series to understand the functional pathways dysregulated with the mRNA overexpression of these two markers.

CKD: A Call for an Age-Adapted Definition.

J Am Soc Nephrol

October 2019

Department of Nephrology, Radboud Institute for Health Sciences, Radboud University Medical Center, Nijmegen, The Netherlands.

Current criteria for the diagnosis of CKD in adults include persistent signs of kidney damage, such as increased urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio or a GFR below the threshold of 60 ml/min per 1.73 m This threshold has important caveats because it does not separate kidney disease from kidney aging, and therefore does not hold for all ages. In an extensive review of the literature, we found that GFR declines with healthy aging without any overt signs of compensation (such as elevated single-nephron GFR) or kidney damage.

October 2019

Laboratoire de Chimie des Processus Biologiques, CNRS UMR 8229, Collège de France, Sorbonne Université, PSL Research University, 11 Place Marcelin Berthelot, 75231, Paris Cedex 05, France.

It is generally believed that CO electroreduction to multi-carbon products such as ethanol or ethylene may be catalyzed with significant yield only on metallic copper surfaces, implying large ensembles of copper atoms. Here, we report on an inexpensive Cu-N-C material prepared via a simple pyrolytic route that exclusively feature single copper atoms with a CuN coordination environment, atomically dispersed in a nitrogen-doped conductive carbon matrix. This material achieves aqueous CO electroreduction to ethanol at a Faradaic yield of 55 % under optimized conditions (electrolyte: 0.

Sci Total Environ

November 2019

Géosciences Environnement Toulouse (GET), Observatoire Midi Pyrénées, Université de Toulouse, CNRS, IRD, 14 avenue E. Belin, 31400 Toulouse, France.

Article Synopsis
  • Air pollution significantly affects the environment and human health; this study focuses on air particles from a mining area in Cartagena-La Unión, Spain, to assess their health risks.
  • Four monitoring sites were chosen: a mining tailing, an urban area, an agricultural zone, and a coastal site, revealing varying particle sizes and mineral compositions, with high levels of harmful metals like Zn, Pb, and As in polluted areas.
  • Risk assessments highlighted that while total metal content indicated unacceptable cancer and hazard risks at the mining tailing, considering bioaccessible metal fractions resulted in more acceptable risk levels, indicating potential overestimation when using total content alone.

Agricultural landscape homogenization has detrimental effects on biodiversity and key ecosystem services. Increasing agricultural landscape heterogeneity by increasing seminatural cover can help to mitigate biodiversity loss. However, the amount of seminatural cover is generally low and difficult to increase in many intensively managed agricultural landscapes.

Zika virus (ZIKV) is a mosquito-borne Flavivirus that causes Zika disease with particular neurological complications, including Guillain-Barré Syndrome and congenital microcephaly. Although ZIKV has been shown to directly infect human neural progenitor cells (hNPCs), thereby decreasing their viability and growth, it is as yet unknown which of the cellular pathways involved in the disruption of neurogenesis are affected following ZIKV infection. By comparing the effect of two ZIKV strains on hNPCs, the differentiation process of the latter cells was found to lead to a decreased susceptibility to infection and cell death induced by each of the ZIKV strains, which was associated with an earlier and stronger antiviral innate immune response in infected, differentiated hNPCs, as compared to undifferentiated cells.

In order to characterize the molecular bases of mineralizing cell evolution, we targeted type X collagen, a nonfibrillar network forming collagen encoded by the Col10a1 gene. It is involved in the process of endochondral ossification in ray-finned fishes and tetrapods (Osteichthyes), but until now unknown in cartilaginous fishes (Chondrichthyes). We show that holocephalans and elasmobranchs have respectively five and six tandemly duplicated Col10a1 gene copies that display conserved genomic synteny with osteichthyan Col10a1 genes.

Sorbonne Universités, Université de technologie de Compiègne, CNRS, Génie Enzymatique et Cellulaire, FRE 3580, Centre de recherches Royallieu, CS 60319, 60203, Compiègne cedex, France.

Free radical scavengers like α-phenyl-N-tert-butylnitrone (PBN) and 6-hydroxy-2,5,7,8-tetramethylchroman-2-carboxylic acid (Trolox) have been widely used as protective agents in various biomimetic and biological models. A series of three amphiphilic Trolox and PBN derivatives have been designed by adding to those molecules a perfluorinated chain as well as a sugar group in order to render them amphiphilic. In this work, we have studied the interactions between these derivatives and lipid membranes to understand how they influence their ability to prevent membrane lipid oxidation.
