Centre d'Ecologie et des Sciences de la Conservation (CESCO-UMR 7204), Sorbonne Universités-MNHN-CNRS-UPMC, CP51, 55-61 rue Buffon, 75005, Paris, France.

The functioning of present ecosystems reflects deep evolutionary history of locally cooccurring species if their functional traits show high phylogenetic signal (PS). However, we do not understand what drives local PS. We hypothesize that local PS is high in undisturbed and stressful habitats, either due to ongoing local assembly of species that maintained ancestral traits, or to past evolutionary maintenance of ancestral traits within habitat species-pools, or to both.

Introduction: Individuals with brain injuries experience cognitive and emotional changes that have long-lasting impacts on everyday life. In the context of rehabilitation, surveys have stressed the importance of compensating for memory disturbances to ease the impact of disorders on day-to-day autonomy. Despite extensive research on the nature of neurocognitive impairments following brain injury, few studies have looked at patients' perceptions of these day-to-day compensations.

Large-scale extinction is one of the defining challenges of our time, as human processes fundamentally and irreversibly reshape global ecosystems. While the extinction of large animals with popular appeal garners widespread public and research interest, the importance of smaller, less "charismatic" species to ecosystem health is increasingly recognized. Benefitting from systematically collected fossil and archaeological archives, we examined snake and lizard extinctions in the Guadeloupe Islands of the Caribbean.

Background: Successful 2-drug regimens (2DRs) for HIV were made possible by the availability of drugs combining potency and tolerability with a high genetic barrier to resistance. How these deal with resistance development/re-emergence, compared with 3DRs, is thus of paramount importance.

Materials And Methods: A national survey including patients who were either naive or experienced with any 2DR or 3DR but failing integrase strand transfer inhibitor (INSTI)-containing regimens [two consecutive plasma viral load (VL) values >50 copies/mL] was conducted between 2014 and 2019.

From ethmoidal air cells to ethmoturbinal passages.

ORL et chirurgie cervico-faciale, bâtiment Louis Mathieu, hôpital de Brabois, université de Lorraine, CHRU de Nancy, allée du Morvan, 54600 Vandœuvre-lès-Nancy, France.

The concept of ethmoidal sinuses composed of ethmoidal air cells does not appear to fit with the embryological origin of the ethmoid. Post-natal formation of the paranasal sinuses, as visualized by MRI, appears to be fundamentally different from the embryological development of the ethmoid sinus. These two organs also appear to have very distinct functions: paranasal sinuses play a role in respiration and sanitization of the respiratory tract, while the ethmoid sinus plays a role in olfaction.

Purpose: Meningiomas represent the most frequent tumor of the central nervous system in adults. While most meningiomas are efficiently treated by surgery and radiotherapy/radiosurgery, there is a small portion of radiation- and surgery-refractory tumors for which there is no clear recommendation for optimal management. The French National Tumor Board Meeting on Meningiomas (NTBM) offers a glimpse on the current management of such patients.

French recommendations for the management of Behçet's disease.

Orphanet J Rare Dis

February 2021

UPMC Université Paris 06, Inserm UMR S 959, Immunology Immunopathology Immunotherapy (I3), Sorbonne Universités, 75005, Paris, France.

Behçet's disease (BD) is a systemic variable vessel vasculitis that involves the skin, mucosa, joints, eyes, arteries, veins, nervous system and gastrointestinal system, presenting with remissions and exacerbations. It is a multifactorial disease, and several triggering factors including oral cavity infections and viruses may induce inflammatory attacks in genetically susceptible individuals. BD vasculitis involves different vessel types and sizes of the vascular tree with mixed-cellular perivascular infiltrates and is often complicated by recurrent thrombosis, particularly in the venous compartment.

Unlike variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease prions, sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease prions have been shown to be difficult to amplify in vitro by protein misfolding cyclic amplification (PMCA). We assessed PMCA of pathological prion protein (PrP) from 14 human sCJD brain samples in 3 substrates: 2 from transgenic mice expressing human prion protein (PrP) with either methionine (M) or valine (V) at position 129, and 1 from bank voles. Brain extracts representing the 5 major clinicopathological sCJD subtypes (MM1/MV1, MM2, MV2, VV1, and VV2) all triggered seeded PrP amplification during serial PMCA with strong seed- and substrate-dependence.

Vaccines against COVID-19 (and its emerging variants) are an essential global intervention to control the current pandemic situation. Vaccines often cause adverse events; however, the vast majority of adverse events following immunization (AEFI) are a consequence of the vaccine stimulating a protective immune response, and not allergic in etiology. Anaphylaxis as an AEFI is uncommon, occurring at a rate of less than 1 per million doses for most vaccines.

Chromosomal inversions are ubiquitous in genomes and often coordinate complex phenotypes, such as the covariation of behavior and morphology in many birds, fishes, insects or mammals. However, why and how inversions become associated with polymorphic traits remains obscure. Here we show that despite a strong selective advantage when they form, inversions accumulate recessive deleterious mutations that generate frequency-dependent selection and promote their maintenance at intermediate frequency.

Article Synopsis
  • Heme interacts with RAGE, a receptor similar to TLR4, suggesting it plays a role in inflammation during intravascular hemolysis.
  • Researchers found that heme binds tightly to the V domain of RAGE, which triggers proinflammatory signals and is dependent on iron.
  • In mouse models, heme injection led to increased inflammatory gene expression in normal mice, but this response was significantly reduced in those lacking RAGE, indicating RAGE's importance in heme-related inflammation.
