Observational studies indicate that the intake of polyphenol-rich foods improves vascular health, thereby significantly reducing the risk of hypertension and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyse the remained potential of grape by-products from important Rhône Valley red wine cultivars: Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Mourvèdre and Alicante. For that, six different extracts from grape pomaces, selected by their antioxidant activity, were studied in vivo during six weeks with spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR).

Despite current advances in cancer research, metastasis remains the leading factor in cancer-related deaths. Here, we identify sorting nexin 9 (SNX9) as a new regulator of breast cancer metastasis. We detected an increase in SNX9 expression in human breast cancer metastases compared with primary tumors and demonstrated that SNX9 expression in MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells is necessary to maintain their ability to metastasize in a chick embryo model.

Background: In a context of large-scale implementation of malaria vector control tools, such as the distribution of long-lasting insecticide nets (LLIN), it is necessary to regularly assess whether strategies are progressing as expected and then evaluate their effectiveness. The present study used the case-control approach to evaluate the effectiveness of LLIN 42 months after national wide distribution. This study design offers an alternative to cohort study and randomized control trial as it permits to avoid many ethical issues inherent to them.

Sampling strategies for phlebotomine sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) in Europe.

The distribution of phlebotomine sand flies is widely reported to be changing in Europe. This can be attributed to either the discovery of sand flies in areas where they were previously overlooked (generally following an outbreak of leishmaniasis or other sand fly-related disease) or to true expansion of their range as a result of climatic or environmental changes. Routine surveillance for phlebotomines in Europe is localized, and often one of the challenges for entomologists working in non-leishmaniasis endemic countries is the lack of knowledge on how to conduct, plan and execute sampling for phlebotomines, or how to adapt on-going sampling strategies for other haematophagous diptera.

Multilocus microsatellite typing of Leishmania and clinical applications: a review.

To study the dynamics of bovine tuberculosis (bTB) in France, 4,654 M. bovis strains isolated mainly from livestock and wildlife since 1978 were characterized by spoligotyping and MLVA based on MIRU-VNTR. In our study spoligotyping allowed the discrimination of 176 types although 3 spoligotypes are predominant and account for more than half of the total strain population: SB0120 (26%), SB0134 (11%) and SB0121 (6%).

Unprecedented chain-length-dependent conformational conversion between 11/9 and 18/16 helix in α/β-hybrid peptides.

α,β-Hybrid oligomers of varying lengths with alternating proteogenic α-amino acid and the rigid β(2,3,3) -trisubstituted bicyclic amino acid ABOC residues were studied using both X-ray crystal and NMR solution structures. While only an 11/9 helix was obtained in the solid state regardless of the length of the oligomers, conformational polymorphism as a chain-length-dependent phenomenon was observed in solution. Consistent with DFT calculations, we established that short oligomers adopted an 11/9 helix, whereas an 18/16 helix was favored for longer oligomers in solution.

The 2'-deoxynucleoside 5'-phosphate N-hydrolase 1 (DNPH1) has been proposed as a new molecular target for cancer treatment. Here, we describe the synthesis of a series of novel 6-aryl- and 6-heteroarylpurine riboside 5'-monophosphates via Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions, and their ability to inhibit recombinant rat and human DNPH1. Enzymatic inhibition studies revealed competitive inhibitors in the low micromolar range.

Insulin secretion preservation is a major issue for the prevention or treatment of type 2 diabetes. We previously showed on β-cells that quercetin (Q), but not resveratrol (R) or N-acetyl cysteine (NAC), amplified glucose-induced insulin secretion in a calcium- and ERK1/2-dependent manner. Quercetin, but not resveratrol or NAC, also protected β-cell function and hyperamplified ERK1/2 phosphorylation in oxidative stress conditions.
