G protein coupled receptors bind ligands that initiate intracellular signaling cascades via heterotrimeric G proteins. In this study, involvement of the N-terminal residues of yeast G-alpha (Gpa1p) with the C-terminal residues of a full-length or C-terminally truncated Ste2p were investigated using bioluminescence resonance energy transfer (BRET), a non-radiative energy transfer phenomenon where protein-protein interactions can be quantified between a donor bioluminescent molecule and a suitable acceptor fluorophore. Constitutive and position-dependent BRET signal was observed in the absence of agonist (α-factor).

Department of Biology, Middle East Technical University, Universiteler Mah. Dumlupinar Blv. No:1, 06800, Cankaya, Ankara, Turkey.

Iron is an essential inorganic element for various cellular events. It is directly associated with cell proliferation and growth; therefore, it is expected that iron metabolism is altered in tumor cells which usually have rapid growth rates. The studies on iron metabolism of tumor cells have shown that tumor cells necessitated higher concentrations of iron and the genes of iron uptake proteins were highly over-expressed.

Dimerization of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCR) may play an important role in maturation, internalization, signaling and/or pharmacology of these receptors. However, the location where dimerization occurs is still under debate. In our study, variants of Ste2p, a yeast mating pheromone GPCR, were tagged with split EGFP (enhanced green fluorescent protein) fragments inserted between transmembrane domain seven and the C-terminus or appended to the C-terminus.

Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Middle East Technical University, Universiteler Mah. Dumlupinar Bulv., 06800 Ankara, Turkey.

Nacre-mimetic epoxy matrix composites reinforced with readily available micron-sized high aspect ratio C-glass flakes were fabricated by a relatively simple, single-step, scalable, time, cost and man-power effective processing strategy: hot-press assisted slip casting (HASC). HASC enables the fabrication of preferentially oriented two-dimensional inorganic reinforcement-polymer matrix bulk lamellar composites with a micro-scale structure resembling the brick-and-mortar architecture of nacre. By applying the micro-scale design guideline found in nacre and optimizing the relative volume fractions of the reinforcement and the matrix as well as by anchoring the brick-and-mortar architecture, and tailoring the interface between reinforcements and the matrix via silane coupling agents, strong, stiff and tough bio-inspired nacre-mimetic bulk composites were fabricated.

TAF Rehabilitation and Caring Center, Universiteler Mah., Bilkent, Cankaya, Ankara, Turkey.

Amputees may suffer from dermatoses such as folliculitis and pilonidal sinus caused by pressure on the stump in hairy parts of the skin. These conditions commonly cause pain and need treatment that result in abandonment of prosthesis use and disrupt the patient's daily living activities. We believe these conditions may be easily, effectively and cheaply prevented with the use of intense pulsed light technology, which is produced for home epilation.

METU-MEMS Research and Application Center, Middle East Technical University (METU), Ankara, Turkey; Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department, Middle East Technical University (METU), Universiteler Mah., Dumlupinar Bulv. No: 1, 06800 Cankaya, Ankara, Turkey. Electronic address:

Glass microfibers are commonly used as biomolecule adsorption media, as structural or disposable components of the optical biosensors. While any improvement in these components are appreciated, utilizing basic tools of traditional approaches may lead to original sensor opportunities as simple, functional designs that can be easily disseminated. Following this pursuit, surface modification of glass microfiber paper surface was performed by 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) and resulting improvement in the cell entrapment capacity could be observed visually, only after Gram staining.

Estrogen-induced upregulation and 3'-UTR shortening of CDC6.

Nucleic Acids Res

November 2012

Department of Biological Sciences, METU (Middle East Technical University), Universiteler Mah, Dumlupınar Blv. No. 1, 06800 Çankaya, Ankara, Turkey.

3'-Untranslated region (UTR) shortening of mRNAs via alternative polyadenylation (APA) has important ramifications for gene expression. By using proximal APA sites and switching to shorter 3'-UTRs, proliferating cells avoid miRNA-mediated repression. Such APA and 3'-UTR shortening events may explain the basis of some of the proto-oncogene activation cases observed in cancer cells.

Comprehensibility of traffic signs among urban drivers in Turkey.

Accid Anal Prev

March 2012

Department of Civil Engineering, Middle East Technical University, Üniversiteler Mah. Dumlupınar Blv. No. 1, 06800 Çankaya, Ankara, Turkey.

Traffic signs are commonly used traffic safety tools, mainly developed to provide crucial information in a short time to support safe drive; but the success depends on their comprehensibility by the drivers. Also, a sudden change in the traditionally used and accepted signs can cause significant safety problem, as in the case of cancellation of red oblique bars in 2004 as a part of the European Union Harmonization Process of Turkey. Having a severe traffic safety problem in Turkey, a need to assess both the comprehensibility of internationally accepted traffic signs and current level of driver education, was the main motivation behind this study.
