Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare the effectiveness of radial (rESWT) and focus (fESWT) extracorporeal shock wave therapy for treating plantar fasciitis in 112 patients between 18 and 95 years old.
  • Patients were divided into two groups, receiving their respective treatments three times a week for three weeks, and their pain and function were evaluated before and after treatment using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and Foot Function Index (FFI).
  • Results showed both treatment methods significantly reduced pain and improved function, with no significant differences between the two modalities at any follow-up points.

Topographic Analysis of the Nipple-Areolar Complex Sensation in Superomedial Pedicle Breast Reduction.

Aesthetic Plast Surg

July 2024

Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery Clinic, Bursa City Hospital, Dogankoy Mahallesi, 16110, Nilufer, Bursa, Turkey.

Background: Surgeons meticulously perform breast reductions, while ensuring vascular integrity of the pedicle and Nipple-Areolar complex (NAC) to prevent any complication. It is crucial to remember that loss of sensation is also substantial complication, mainly due to unique characteristic features of the NAC. This study aimed to compare early and long-term sensory results by performing topographic analysis of NAC sensation after superomedial pedicle breast reduction.

Purpose: Chiari Malformation Type I (CM1) is characterized by the downward displacement of the cerebellar tonsils below the foramen magnum. The standard surgical treatment for CM1 is foramen magnum decompression and atlas laminectomy (FMD-AL). However, there is a growing interest in exploring minimally invasive techniques, such as neuroendoscopically assisted FMD-AL, to optimize surgical outcomes.

Drug insensitivity is arguably one of the biggest challenges in cancer therapeutics. Although effective therapeutic solutions in cancer are limited due to the emergence of drug insensitivity, exploiting evolutionary understanding in this context can provide potential second-line therapeutics sensitizing the drug insensitive populations. Targeted therapeutic agent dabrafenib is used to treat CRC patients with BRAF V600E genotype and insensitivity to dabrafenib is often observed.

Differential expression of mRNA 3'-end isoforms in cervical and ovarian cancers.

Heliyon

September 2023

Department of Biological Sciences, Middle East Technical University (METU), Dumlupinar Blv No: 1 Universiteler Mah., Cankaya, Ankara, 06800, Turkiye.

Early diagnosis and therapeutic targeting are continuing challenges for gynecological cancers. Here, we focus on cancer transcriptomes and describe the differential expression of 3'UTR isoforms in patients using an algorithm to detect differential poly(A) site usage. We find primarily 3'UTR shortening cases in cervical cancers compared with the normal cervix.

Puritanical moral rules as moral heuristics coping with uncertainties.

Behav Brain Sci

October 2023

Bilkent University, Faculty of Business Administration, Universiteler Mah., Cankaya-Ankara, http://fba.bilkent.edu.tr/rasim-serdar-kurdoglu/.

As the cultural evolution of a puritanical moral norm in Turkey illustrates, puritanical moral norms are not developed by nonrational reasoning concerned with purity and cleanliness. People use puritanical moral rules as moral heuristics for making intendedly rational decisions about whether to cooperate or not when the commitment of the counterparty is uncertain.

Targeting PD-1/PD-L1 has shown substantial therapeutic response and unprecedented long-term durable responses in the clinic. However, several challenges persist, encompassing the prediction of treatment effectiveness and patient responses, the emergence of treatment resistance, and the necessity for additional biomarkers. Consequently, we comprehensively explored the often-overlooked isoforms of crucial immunotherapy players, leveraging transcriptomic analysis, structural modeling, and immunohistochemistry (IHC) data.

Background: The number of cosmetic procedures has increased in recent years. Social media use and its effects on plastic surgery decisions are among the most widely discussed topics. This study aimed to test a research model that explores the relationship between social media usage frequency, appearance-related social media pressure, and body mass index (BMI) on the body appreciation of patients undergoing cosmetic procedures, and to evaluate their clinical impacts.

One of the most significant challenges impeding cancer treatment effectiveness is drug resistance. Combining evolutionary understanding with drug resistance can pave the way for the identification of second-line drug options that can overcome drug resistance. Although capecitabine and irinotecan are commonly used therapeutic agents in the treatment of CRC patients, resistance to these agents is common.

Preserving the Nipple Projection in Breast Reduction with the Free Nipple-Areolar Graft Technique: Purse-String Suture.

Aesthetic Plast Surg

December 2023

Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery Clinic, Ankara City Hospital, University of Health Sciences, Universiteler Mah. 1604. Cad. No: 9, Cankaya, 06800, Ankara, Turkey.

Background: Breast reduction with the free nipple-areolar graft (FNG) technique has disadvantages such as loss of nipple projection, loss of nipple sensation, and depigmentation of the nipple-areolar complex. In this study, patients in whom a purse-string (PS) suture was used in the center of the de-epithelialized area to prevent loss of nipple projection were compared with patients who underwent the conventional method.

Methods: A retrospective analysis of the patients who underwent breast reduction with the FNG was conducted in our department.

In cancer, evolutionary forces select for clones that evade the immune system. Here we analyzed >10,000 primary tumors and 356 immune-checkpoint-treated metastases using immune dN/dS, the ratio of nonsynonymous to synonymous mutations in the immunopeptidome, to measure immune selection in cohorts and individuals. We classified tumors as immune edited when antigenic mutations were removed by negative selection and immune escaped when antigenicity was covered up by aberrant immune modulation.

Purpose: This study is aimed at investigating the role of preoperative procollagen type 1 N-terminal peptide (P1NP) and collagen type 1 C-telopeptide (CTx) levels in predicting the development of postoperative hypocalcemia in primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT).

Methods: In this prospective observational study, preoperative complaints of patients with primary hyperparathyroidism and their urea, creatinine, glomerular filtration rate (GFR), calcium, albumin, urinary calcium, parathyroid hormone, and bone mineral density (BMD) were recorded. P1NP and CTx levels were analyzed in blood samples taken the day before surgery, and their relationship with calcium levels obtained on the first postoperative day was examined.

Besides typical respiratory symptoms, COVID-19 patients also have gastrointestinal symptoms. Studies focusing on the gastrointestinal tumors derived from gastrointestinal tissues have raised a question whether these tumors might express higher levels of SARS-CoV-2 associated genes and therefore patients diagnosed with GI cancers may be more susceptible to the infection. In this study, we have analyzed the expression of SARS-CoV-2 associated genes and their co-expressions in gastrointestinal solid tumors, cancer cell lines and patient-derived organoids relative to their normal counterparts.

Objective: To investigate the correlation between the standardized uptake value (SUV) metrics derived from technetium-99m (Tc) methylene diphosphonate (MDP) single photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography (SPECT/CT) and fluorine-18 (F) sodium fluoride (NaF) positron emission tomography (PET)/CT.

Subjects And Methods: A total of 129 metastatic lesions from 14 patients who underwent both Tc-MDP SPECT/CT and F-NaF PET/CT within one month were included in the analyses. The lesions with markedly increased uptake were semi-automatically segmented into a volume of interest in both SPECT and PET images by taking the 42% of maximum uptake as a threshold.
