Automatic wheelchairs directly controlled by brain activity could provide autonomy to severely paralyzed individuals. Current approaches mostly rely on non-invasive measures of brain activity and translate individual commands into wheelchair movements. For example, an imagined movement of the right hand would steer the wheelchair to the right.

Background And Aims: The current study proposes a novel volume-outcome (V-O) meta-analytical approach to determine the optimal annual hospital case volume threshold for cardiovascular interventions in need of centralization. This novel method is applied to surgery for acute type A aortic dissection (ATAAD) as an illustrative example.
Methods: A systematic search was applied to three electronic databases (1 January 2012 to 29 March 2023).

Aims: Apart from cardiotoxicity, the chemotherapeutic doxorubicin (DOX) induces vascular toxicity, represented by arterial stiffness and endothelial dysfunction. Both parameters are of interest for cardiovascular risk stratification as they are independent predictors of future cardiovascular events in the general population. However, the time course of DOX-induced cardiovascular toxicity remains unclear.

Introduction: Dyspnea is a commonly described symptom in various chronic and acute conditions. Despite its frequency, relatively little is known about the prevalence and assessment of dyspnea in general populations. The aims of this review were: 1) to estimate the prevalence of dyspnea in general adult populations; 2) to identify associated factors; and 3) to identify used methods for dyspnea assessment.

Digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing has become a powerful manufacturing tool for the fast fabrication of complex functional structures. The rapid progress in DLP printing has been linked to research on optical design factors and ink selection. This highlights the main challenges in the DLP printing of photopolymerizable inks.

Background: The incidence of Lisfranc fractures is rising, along with the incidence of foot fractures in general. These injuries can lead to long-term healthcare use and societal costs. Current economic evaluation studies are scarce in Lisfranc fracture research, and only investigate the healthcare costs.

Purpose Of Review: Though patient studies have been important for understanding the disease, research done in animals and cell culture complement our knowledge from patient data and provide insight into the mechanism of the disease. Understanding how COVID causes damage to the heart is essential to understanding possible long-term consequences.
Recent Findings: COVID-19 is primarily a disease that attacks the lungs; however, it is known to have important consequences in many other tissues including the heart.

The short-term scaling exponent of detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA-a1) of heart rate variability may be a helpful tool to assess autonomic balance as a prelude to daily, individualized training. For this concept to be useful, between-session reliability should be acceptable. The aim of this study was to explore the reliability of DFA-a1 during a low-intensity exercise session in both a non-fatigued and a fatigued condition in healthy males and females.

The incidence of osteoarthritis (OA) has been expected to increase due to an aging population, as well as an increased incidence of intra-articular (osteo-) chondral damage. Lipids have already been shown to be involved in the inflammatory process of OA. This study aims at revealing region-specific lipid profiles of the infrapatellar fat pad (IPFP) of OA or cartilage defect patients by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry imaging (MALDI-MSI), which could be used as biomarkers for early OA detection.

Both nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) have been associated with incident cardiovascular disease (CVD), independent of confounders. Causality has recently been inferred by Mendelian randomization studies. Although these findings have contributed to current guidelines that recommend screening for and treatment of cardiovascular risk factors, it not yet clear how to position NAFLD/MAFLD in cardiovascular risk estimation scores and, consequently, which treatment targets should be used.

Coronary artery disease affects millions worldwide. Bypass surgery remains the gold standard; however, autologous tissue is not always available. Hence, the need for an off-the-shelf graft to treat these patients remains extremely high.

Introduction: Mentors in programmatic assessment support mentees with low-stakes feedback, which often also serves as input for high-stakes decision making. That process potentially causes tensions in the mentor-mentee relationship. This study explored how undergraduate mentors and mentees in health professions education experience combining developmental support and assessment, and what this means for their relationship.

Background: Medical schools look to support students in coping with challenges and stressors related to clinical rotations. One potential approach is implementing Intervision Meetings (IM): a peer group reflection method during which students address challenging situations and personal development issues with peers, guided by a coach. Its implementation and perceived effectiveness in undergraduate medical education has however not yet been widely studied and described.

Fibrosis of implants remains a significant challenge in the use of biomedical devices and tissue engineering materials. Antifouling coatings, including synthetic zwitterionic coatings, have been developed to prevent fouling and cell adhesion to several implantable biomaterials. While many of these coatings need covalent attachment, a conceptually simpler approach is to use a spontaneous self-assembly event to anchor the coating to a surface.

Background: Within the group of node-negative colon cancer patients, presumed to have a good prognosis, a significant percentage of patients develops cancer-recurrence. Current high-risk features prove inadequate to select these particular high-risk patients. In the process of tailor-made care and shared decision-making the need to identify these patients grows.

Background Handcrafted radiomics and deep learning (DL) models individually achieve good performance in lesion classification (benign vs malignant) on contrast-enhanced mammography (CEM) images. Purpose To develop a comprehensive machine learning tool able to fully automatically identify, segment, and classify breast lesions on the basis of CEM images in recall patients. Materials and Methods CEM images and clinical data were retrospectively collected between 2013 and 2018 for 1601 recall patients at Maastricht UMC+ and 283 patients at Gustave Roussy Institute for external validation.

Bioprinting in space is the next frontier in tissue engineering. In the absence of gravity, novel opportunities arise, as well as new challenges. The cardiovascular system needs particular attention in tissue engineering, not only to develop safe countermeasures for astronauts in future deep and long-term space missions, but also to bring solutions to organ transplantation shortage.

Aims: Focus of pacemaker therapy is shifting from right ventricular (RV) apex pacing (RVAP) and biventricular pacing (BiVP) to conduction system pacing. Direct comparison between the different pacing modalities and their consequences to cardiac pump function is difficult, due to the practical implications and confounding variables. Computational modelling and simulation provide the opportunity to compare electrical, mechanical, and haemodynamic consequences in the same virtual heart.

Locally led adaptation (LLA) has recently gained importance against top-down planning practices that often exclude the lived realities and priorities of local communities and create injustices at the local level. The promise of LLA is that adaptation would be defined, prioritised, designed, monitored, and evaluated by local communities themselves, enabling a shift in power to local stakeholders, resulting in more effective adaptation interventions. Critical reflections on the intersections of power and justice in LLA are, however, lacking.
