Background: There is substantial evidence on the associations between a positive nurse practice environment and improved nurse and patient outcomes, as well as the factors that mediate these associations, in high-income countries and in hospital settings. The knowledge gaps in African and primary health care settings motivated this empirical study.

Objective: The objective of this study was to examine the impact of the dimensions of the nurse practice environment, specifically human resource management, foundations for nursing care, and participation in clinic affairs, on job outcomes and standards of care.

Voltage-gated sodium channel β1 subunits are essential proteins that regulate excitability. They modulate sodium and potassium currents, function as cell adhesion molecules and regulate gene transcription following regulated intramembrane proteolysis. Biallelic pathogenic variants in , encoding β1, are linked to developmental and epileptic encephalopathy 52, with clinical features overlapping Dravet syndrome.

After conducting an analysis of the cryptic cluster region and performing transcriptomic studies, an integrative BAC Vector containing the gene sequence was constructed. The heterologous expression of the cluster in J1074 resulted in the production of the angucyclic product, seongomycin, which allowed for the assesment of its antibacterial, antiproliferative, and antiviral activities. Heterologous production was further confirmed by targeted knock-out experiments involving key regulators of the biosynthetic pathways.

Plasma-based NO synthesis the Birkeland-Eyde process was one of the first industrial nitrogen fixation methods. However, this technology never played a dominant role for nitrogen fixation, due to the invention of the Haber-Bosch process. Recently, nitrogen fixation by plasma technology has gained significant interest again, due to the emergence of low cost, renewable electricity.

Hydroxyapatite (HAP) is frequently used as biocompatible coating on Ti-based implants. In this context, the HAP-Ti adhesion is of crucial importance. Here, we report calculations to investigate the influence of Si incorporation into the amorphous calcium-phosphate (a-HAP) structure on the interfacial bonding mechanism between the a-HAP coating and an amorphous titanium dioxide (a-TiO) substrate, contrasting two different density functionals: PBE-GGA, and DFT-D3, which are capable of describing the influence of the van der Waals (vdW) interactions.

Uncertainty in soil carbon (C) fluxes across different land-use transitions is an issue that needs to be addressed for the further deployment of perennial bioenergy crops. A large-scale short-rotation coppice (SRC) site with poplar () and willow () was established to examine the land-use transitions of arable and pasture to bioenergy. Soil C pools, output fluxes of soil CO , CH , dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and volatile organic compounds, as well as input fluxes from litter fall and from roots, were measured over a 4-year period, along with environmental parameters.

Several studies have investigated the association between socioeconomic status and the occurrence of allergies. Nevertheless, the results remain contradictory. The aim of this study was to evaluate the associations between parental education and the occurrence of atopic sensitization, recurrent wheezing and eczema during the first year of life, differentiating between atopic and non-atopic disorders based on specific serum IgE.

Objectives: To collect reliable, comparable and publicly available data on hospital use of antibiotics in Europe aggregated at the national level (1997-2002).

Methods: Consumption data of systemic antibiotics in Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical (ATC) class J01 were collected and expressed in defined daily doses (DDD) per 1000 inhabitants per day. Valid data for 2002 were available for 15 countries, and 6 year trends for 10 countries.

Combined dexamethasone/CRF test in remitted outpatients with recurrent major depressive disorder.

J Affect Disord

July 2006

Collaborative Antwerp Psychiatric Research Institute, Universiteitsplein 1 B-2610 Antwerpen, University of Antwerp, Belgium.

Background: Hyperactivity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is a prominent neurobiological finding during a major depressive episode, reflecting a state dependent factor. An issue under investigation is whether the dysfunction of the HPA axis has also a role to play as a state-independent or trait factor for major depressive disorder (MDD). In relation to this, it is important to examine HPA axis function in patients who are clinically remitted from depression.

This study gives a qualitative and quantitative description of the different terrestrial locomotor modes of a group of white-handed gibbons (Hylobates lar) from the Wild Animal Park Planckendael, Belgium. The gibbons were filmed during voluntary locomotion on a grassy and smooth substrate and on a pole. These video images allowed us to define seven different gait types, based on spatial and temporal footfall patterns.

Apoptosis in atheroclerosis: implications for plaque destabilization.

Division of Pharmacology, University of Antwerp-Campus Drie Eiken, Universiteitsplein 1-B 2610 Wilrijk.

An increasing body of evidence from both animal models and human specimens suggests that apoptosis or programmed cell death is a major event in the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis. Although the significance of apoptosis in atherosclerosis remains unclear, it has been proposed that apoptotic cell death contributes to plaque instability, rupture and thrombus formation. In this study, we have outlined some of our most recent results concerning initiation of apoptosis in atherosclerosis with a special focus on oxidative DNA and RNA damage.
