We investigate the non-equilibrium fluctuations occurring during free diffusion between two solutions of glycerol and water with various concentration differences. The non-linearity of the system, determined by the strong stratification of the sample, requires introducing an interpretation model able to characterize the dependence of the correlation properties of the non-equilibrium fluctuations on the local thermophysical variables of the system. The proposed model allows us to characterize the dynamics of non-equilibrium fluctuations in the presence of a wide range of relaxation times determined by the strong stratification of the sample, at variance with the cumulant methods commonly used in dynamic light scattering experiments, which work well in the presence of a moderate dispersion of relaxation times.

In this short review we highlight the importance and the capabilities of composition spread alloy films (CSAFs) for the high-throughput study and comprehensive understanding of corrosion passivation in multicomponent alloys, ABC, spanning composition space, ∈ [0, 1] and ∈ [0, 1 - ]. After first establishing the mechanistic issues associated with corrosion, and the problems arising from the corrosion of metals, we establish the need for further studying and understanding the mechanisms of alloy corrosion and corrosion passivation. In particular, we highlight the development of new combinatorial methods that circumvent the experimental bottleneck associated with preparing, characterizing, and testing many alloy samples having common components at different compositions.

In the context of the widespread distribution of zero valent iron nanoparticles (nZVI) in the environment and its possible exposure to many aquatic and terrestrial organisms, this study investigates the effects, uptake, bioaccumulation, localisation and possible transformations of nZVI in two different forms (aqueous dispersion-Nanofer 25S and air-stable powder-Nanofer STAR) in a model plant-. Seedlings exposed to Nanofer STAR displayed symptoms of toxicity, including chlorosis and reduced growth. At the tissue and cellular level, the exposure to Nanofer STAR induced a strong accumulation of Fe in the root intercellular spaces and in Fe-rich granules in pollen grains.

Harmful algal blooms events have been reported worldwide and during the last decades are occurred with increasing frequency and intensity due to the climate change and the high inputs of nutrients in freshwaters from anthropogenic activities. During blooms cyanobacteria release in water their toxic secondary metabolites, known as cyanotoxins, along with other bioactive metabolites. Due to the negative impacts of these compounds on aquatic ecosystems and public health, there is an urgent need to detect and identify known and unknown cyanobacterial metabolites in surface waters.

A method was developed for the quantification of iron-siderophore complexes by electrospray high-resolution accurate mass (HRAM) mass spectrometry (MS) without the need for authentic standards. The bulk of iron-siderophore complexes was purified by solid-phase extraction (SPE) and concentrated by evaporation. The individual complexes were identified by fast size-exclusion chromatography (FastSEC)-Orbitrap MS on the basis of the exact molecular mass (±1 ppm) and MS or MS fragmentation.

The present study aims in the developing of new soft transducers based on sophisticated stimuli-responsive microgels that exhibit spontaneous self-assembly forming cohesive films with conductive and mechanoelectrical properties. For that, oligo(ethylene glycol)-based stimuli-responsive microgels have been synthesized using bio-inspired catechol cross-linkers by one-step batch precipitation polymerization in aqueous media. Then, 3,4-ethylene dioxyyhiophene (EDOT) has been directly polymerized onto stimuli-responsive microgels using catechol groups as the unique dopant.

Two major diseases that affect grapevine leaves and berries are controlled by the oomycete . As the efficacy of biocontrol agents strongly depends on factors such as the trophic behaviors of pathogens and cultivar susceptibility, a two-disease approach was implemented to evaluate the activity of against (the necrotrophic fungus of gray mold) and (the biotrophic oomycete of downy mildew) on two grapevine cultivars with different susceptibilities to these two pathogens. The results show that grapevine root inoculation with significantly reduced and infection on the leaves of the two cultivars, but with differences.

The dataset contains physical parameters of a human breast with a high-contrast inclusion, the acquisition setup with positions of sources and receivers, and the associated pressure-wave data at ultrasonic frequencies. We simulated the wave propagation based on seven different viscous models using the physical parameters of the breast.

In the quest to develop nanometrically defined catalytic systems for applications in the catalytic valorization of agri-food wastes, small Ni-based nanoparticles supported on inorganic solid supports have been prepared by decomposition of organometallic precursors in refluxing ethanol under H atmosphere, in the presence of supports exhibiting insulating or semi-conductor properties, such as MgAlO and TiO, respectively. The efficiency of the as-prepared Ni-based nanocomposites has been evaluated towards the hydrogenation of unsaturated fatty acids under solvent-free conditions, with high selectivity regarding the hydrogenation of C=C bonds. The influence of the support on the catalytic performance of the prepared Ni-based nanocomposites is particularly highlighted.

The self-consistent field Poisson-Boltzmann framework is applied to analyze equilibrium partitioning of ampholytic nanoparticles (NPs) between buffer solution and polyelectrolyte (PE) polyanionic brush. We demonstrate that depending on pH and salt concentration in the buffer solution, interactions between ionizable (acidic and basic) groups on the NP surface and electrostatic field created by PE brush may either lead to the spontaneous uptake of NPs or create an electrostatic potential barrier, preventing the penetration of NPs inside PE brush. The capability of PE brush to absorb or repel NPs is determined by the shape of the insertion free energy that is calculated as a function of NP distance from the grafting surface.
