Chemical fingerprints in otoliths are commonly used as natural habitat markers in fishes. Alternatively, the first dorsal fin spine can provide valuable chemical information and may be more suitable for studying (i) endangered fish species that cannot be sacrificed for their otoliths or (ii) fishes for which otoliths might not be available because of management or commercial reasons. Here, we studied multi-element chemistry of fin spine edges collected from Atlantic bluefin tuna (ABFT; ) (Linnaeus, 1758) to investigate the utility of the fin spine edge as a natural habitat marker.

We report the calculation of Raman modes of thiophenol molecules adsorbed on a real gold surface. The calculated Raman spectra strongly depend on the absorption configuration of the molecule on the metallic surface, a feature that should be carefully taken into account in the interpretation of the surface enhanced Raman spectra (SERS). The calculated Raman spectra are compared with experimental SERS measurements, the best accordance being obtained for a tilted configuration of the absorbed molecule.

The land-sea continuum constitutes a mixing zone where soil microbial communities encounter, via runoff, those inhabiting marine coastal sediment resulting in community coalescence. Here, we propose an experimental approach, mimicking the land-sea continuum, to study the microbial community coalescence events in different situations, by 16S and 18S rRNA genes metabarcoding. Enhancing the Mechanical Properties of 3D-Printed Waterborne Polyurethane-Urea and Cellulose Nanocrystal Scaffolds through Crosslinking.

In this work, shape-customized scaffolds based on waterborne polyurethane-urea (WBPUU) were prepared via the combination of direct ink writing 3D-printing and freeze-drying techniques. To improve the printing performance of the ink and guarantee a good shape fidelity of the scaffold, cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) were added during the synthesis of the WBPUU and some of the printed constructs were immersed in CaCl prior to the freeze-drying process to promote ionic crosslinking between calcium ions and the polyurethane. The results showed that apart from allowing the ink to be successfully printed, obtaining scaffolds with good shape fidelity, the addition of the CNC resulted in a greater homogeneity of the porous structure as well as an increase of the swelling capacity of the scaffolds.

A series of novel 2,9-[(substituted-aminomethyl)]-4,7-phenyl-1,10-phenanthroline derivatives was designed, synthesized, and evaluated in vitro against three protozoan parasites (, and ). Mollusks are very sensitive to aquatic environmental alterations and then, are important bio-indicators for monitoring the contamination of water bodies. Iodinated X-ray contrast media (ICMs) are ubiquitously present in the aquatic environment, primarily due to their high consumption for diagnosis purposes, high injection levels, low biodegradability, and low removal rates by wastewater treatment plants. Although these compounds are assumed to be of low toxicity, aquatic organisms are continuously exposed to these agents, which may result in adverse effects as ICMs can act as iodine source and disrupt the endocrine system.

Implications of the Circular Economy in the Context of Plastic Recycling: The Case Study of Opaque PET.

The use of recycled opaque PET (r-O-PET, with TiO) as a reinforcement for the recycled polypropylene matrix (r-PP) was evaluated through the life cycle assessment according to different scenarios corresponding to two different recycled blends and considered two virgin raw plastic material as reference materials when comparing the environmental performance of the proposed treatments. The results indicate that the environmental performance was quite different for each blend, since the additional extrusion process required in scenario 2 (blend with TiO) causes all impact categories analysed to report higher values when compared with scenario 1 (blend without TiO). The stage that contributes the most corresponds to the different extrusion processes included in both recycling blends, representing at least 80% of the total for global warming.

In order to continue the development of inks valid for cold extrusion 3D printing, waterborne, polyurethane-urea (WBPUU) based inks with cellulose nanofibers (CNF), as a rheological modulator, were prepared by two incorporation methods, and , in which the CNF were added after and during the synthesis process, respectively. Moreover, in order to improve the affinity of the reinforcement with the matrix, modified CNF was also employed. In the preparation, interactions between CNFs and water prevail over interactions between CNFs and WBPUU nanoparticles, resulting in strong gel-like structures.

European flounder foraging movements in an estuarine nursery seascape inferred from otolith microchemistry and stable isotopes.

The structure and diversity of microbial community inhabiting coastal sediments reflect the exposition to contaminants. Aiming to assess the changes in the microbiota from Sepetiba Bay (SB, Brazil) sediments, correlations between the 16S rRNA gene data (V4-V5 region), metal contamination factors (CF), and the ecological risk classification provided by the Quality Ratio (QR) index were considered. The results show that microbial diversity differs significantly between the less (SB external sector) and the most (SB internal sector) polluted sectors.

The evolution of ferroelectric instability in ABO perovskites is systematically investigated for tantalates, niobates and titanates at the hybrid density-functional theory level. The influence of the A cation is analysed in terms of the frequency of the lowest F IR-active phonon mode at different volumes for (Cs, Rb, K, Na)TaO, (Ba, Pb, Sn, Ge)TiO and (Rb, K, Na, Li)NbO and correlated with the ionic radius as well as the degree of hybridization in the bonds. The atomic displacement corresponding to each mode is described as a function of volume, and the static permittivity is calculated for the stable 3̄ phases.

Biodegradable plastics, if they are not properly managed at their end-of-life, can have the same hazardous environmental consequences as conventional plastics. This study investigates the treatment of the main biodegradable plastics under mesophilic and thermophilic anaerobic digestion using biochemical methane potential test and the microorganisms involved in the process using amplicon sequencing of the 16 S rRNA. Here we showed that, only PHB and TPS undergone important and rapid biodegradation under mesophilic condition (38 °C).
