Insects appeared more than 400 million years ago and they represent the richest and most diverse taxonomic group with several million species. Yet, under the combined effect of the loss of natural habitats, the intensification of agriculture with massive use of pesticides, global warming and biological invasions, insects show alarming signs of decline. Although difficult to quantify, species extinction and population reductions are confirmed for many ecosystems.

Charcot's neuroarthropathy is a destructive complication of the joint, which is often found in patients living with diabetes. Despite the fact that its description was published almost 100 years ago, its pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment remain areas that need to be updated. Its prevalence is low in patients living with diabetes, but this increases in particular situations such as peripheral neuropathy, as well as after simultaneous kidney-pancreas transplantation (SPKT) in patients living with type 1 diabetes.

Hyperacute Recanalization Strategies and Childhood Stroke in the Evidence Age.

Stroke

January 2021

Assistance publique-Hôpitaux de Paris, CHU Saint-Étienne, CH Sainte-Anne, French Center for Pediatric Stroke, France (S.C., A.O., O.N., G.B., B.H., M.K.).

No controlled pharmacological studies are available in the field of pediatric stroke, except for sickle cell disease. Therefore, while pharmacological and mechanical recanalization treatments have repeatedly shown clinical benefit in adults with arterial ischemic stroke, pediatric strokologists still cannot base their therapeutic management (including hyperacute strategies) on high-level evidence. Once again, pediatricians face the same dichotomic choice: adapting adult procedures now versus waiting-for a long time-for the corresponding pediatric trials.

The bioactive vitamin D, 1α,25(OH)D, plays a central role in calcium homeostasis by controlling the activity of the vitamin D receptor (VDR) in various tissues. Hypercalcemia secondary to high circulating levels of vitamin D leads to hypercalciuria, nephrocalcinosis and renal dysfunctions. Current therapeutic strategies aim at limiting calcium intake, absorption and resorption, or 1α,25(OH)D synthesis, but are poorly efficient.

Past changes in ocean C disequilibria have been suggested to reflect the Southern Ocean control on global exogenic carbon cycling. Yet, the volumetric extent of the glacial carbon pool and the deglacial mechanisms contributing to release remineralized carbon, particularly from regions with enhanced mixing today, remain insufficiently constrained. Here, we reconstruct the deglacial ventilation history of the South Indian upwelling hotspot near Kerguelen Island, using high-resolution C-dating of smaller-than-conventional foraminiferal samples and multi-proxy deep-ocean oxygen estimates.

Coral cover surveys corroborate predictions on reef adaptive potential to thermal stress.

Sci Rep

November 2020

Laboratory of Geographic Information Systems, Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, Lausanne, Switzerland.

Article Synopsis
  • Anomalous heat waves are threatening coral reefs globally, prompting the need to find coral populations that can withstand thermal stress.
  • A seascape genomics framework was used to study thermal adaptation and connectivity in New Caledonia's coral reefs, combining remote sensing and genomic data from three coral species.
  • Findings showed that reefs predicted to have high adaptation and connectivity had lower coral cover loss after heat stress, suggesting these indicators can guide conservation efforts.

Administration of diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) is the treatment approach used to promote the decorporation of internalized plutonium. Here we evaluated the efficacy of PEGylated liposomes coated with DTPA, primarily designed to prevent enhanced plutonium accumulation in bones, compared to marketed nonliposomal DTPA and liposomes encapsulating DTPA. The comparative effects were examined in terms of reduction of activity in tissues of plutonium-injected rats.

Human dentin characteristics of patients with osteogenesis imperfecta: insights into collagen-based biomaterials.

Acta Biomater

January 2021

Université de Paris, Dental School, UR2496, Montrouge, F-92120, France; AP-HP Reference Center for Rare Disorders of the Calcium and Phosphate Metabolism (OSCAR, ERN Bond), Dental Medicine Department, Bretonneau Hospital, GHN, 75018 Paris, France.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), also known as "brittle bone disease", is a rare genetic disorder of the skeleton, whose most benign form I corresponds to autosomal dominant mutations in the genes encoding type I collagen (COLA1, COLA2). Several associated skeletal manifestations are often observed but, surprisingly, while dentin defects often reflect genetic bone disorders, about half of OI patients have no obvious oral manifestations. Here, we investigated the collagen, mineral and mechanical properties of dentin from deciduous teeth collected from patients with mild form of OI and displaying no obvious clinical signs of dentinogenesis imperfecta.

Temperature affects the reproductive outputs of coral-eating starfish Acanthaster spp. after adult exposure to near-future ocean warming and acidification.

Mar Environ Res

December 2020

IRD, UMR 9220 ENTROPIE, BP A5, Noumea, New Caledonia; Laboratoire d'Excellence "Corail", 58 avenue Paul Alduy, 66860, Perpignan, France.

Article Synopsis
  • COTS outbreaks pose a major threat to coral reefs globally, yet their response to changing ocean conditions is still not fully understood.
  • Research focused on the reproductive success of adult COTS exposed to various combinations of ocean warming and acidification showed that their optimal breeding period occurs at the end of the year with temperatures above 26°C.
  • Elevated temperatures negatively impacted fertilization success and egg metrics, while acidification didn't significantly affect reproductive outputs, indicating that temperature changes are crucial for understanding COTS population dynamics under climate change.

The expression of the human β-like globin genes follows a well-orchestrated developmental pattern, undergoing two essential switches, the first one during the first weeks of gestation (ε to γ), and the second one during the perinatal period (γ to β). The γ- to β-globin gene switching mechanism includes suppression of fetal (γ-globin, HbF) and activation of adult (β-globin, HbA) globin gene transcription. In hereditary persistence of fetal hemoglobin (HPFH), the γ-globin suppression mechanism is impaired leaving these individuals with unusual elevated levels of fetal hemoglobin (HbF) in adulthood.
