Institute of Pharmacy, Freie Universität Berlin, Königin-Luise-Straße 2+4, 14195 Berlin, Germany. Electronic address:

In comparison to well-known drug-metabolizing organs such as the liver, the metabolic capacity of human skin is still not well elucidated despite the widespread use of topical drug application. To gain a comprehensive insight into anabolic steroid metabolism in the skin, six structurally related anabolic androgenic steroids, testosterone, metandienone, methyltestosterone, clostebol, dehydrochloromethyltestosterone, and methylclostebol, were applied to human keratinocytes and fibroblasts derived from the juvenile foreskin. Phase I metabolites obtained from incubation media were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.

Background: Little is known about cannabis use problems among individuals who use cannabis for medical purposes and whether rates and determinants of cannabis use problems in medical users differ to those observed among individuals using for recreational reasons. This study examines whether Severity of Dependence Scale (SDS) scores differ across individuals who use self-grown cannabis for the following reasons: "recreational only", "medical and recreational" and "medical only". Furthermore, the study tests whether cannabis use frequency, cannabis strain, and type of cannabis influences the strength of the association between purpose of use and cannabis use problems.

Tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI) have emerged as a paradigm-shifting therapeutic approach for the treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) following their regulatory approval in 2001. These agents have revolutionized the management of CML by significantly improving patient outcomes and enabling them to achieve near-normal life expectancies. Consequently, the utilization of TKI has become increasingly prevalent, accompanied by the recognition and management of their associated adverse effects.

Purpose: Food and Alcohol Disturbance (FAD) is characterized by the combination of problematic alcohol use and eating disorder symptoms to offset caloric intake associated with alcohol drinking and/or to enhance intoxication. The Compensatory Eating and Behaviors in Response to Alcohol Consumption Scale (CEBRACS) is a proven tool for measuring FAD, validated in English and Italian populations but never in the French population. The present study aims at validating a French version of the CEBRACS in a representative sample of university students and to determine its validity and reliability.

Influence of macular pigment on the sensitivity to discomfort glare from daylight.

Sci Rep

Laboratory of Integrated Performance in Design (LIPID), École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), 1015, Lausanne, Switzerland.

Understanding the factors that influence the human perception of glare is necessary to properly address glare risks in buildings and achieve comfortable visual environments, especially in the workplace. Yet large inter-individual variabilities in glare perception remain unexplained and thus uncovered by the current empirical glare models. We hypothesize that this variability has an origin in the human retina, in particular in the density of macular pigments present in its central area, which varies between individuals.

Human interleukin-12α and EBI3 are cytokines with anti-inflammatory functions.

Sci Adv

October 2023

Center for Functional Protein Assemblies (CPA), Department of Bioscience, TUM School of Natural Sciences, Technical University of Munich, 85748 Garching, Germany.

Article Synopsis
  • Interleukins are proteins that help regulate the immune system, with the IL-12 family being important in dealing with inflammatory and infectious diseases.
  • IL-35, a less understood member of this family, is crucial in autoimmune diseases and cancer but is distinct as it comprises two subunits, IL-12α and EBI3.
  • The study shows that these subunits can promote their own secretion, act independently as anti-inflammatory agents, lower proinflammatory cytokines, and help develop regulatory T cells, suggesting new avenues for immunotherapies.

When patients are discharged from the hospital and return home, they are at risk of adverse events if the continuity of care is broken. So far, the evidence for transitional care models to reduce readmission rates has focused mainly on patients with a single condition. Based on this observation, we identified the population that may benefit the most from the development of a new transitional care model, as part of the INSTEAD project, by consensus between patients and professionals in hospitals and the community.

There is a gap between the current service offer and the needs of people suffering from burnout. Actors in the field, from employers to prescribers, have a role to play in addressing the health needs of the target population, promoting existing services and facilitating their integrative collaboration. This is what a study evaluating the adequacy between the health needs of people experiencing burnout and the services offered to these patients from the point of view of key informants in the canton of Vaud has shown.

Medication intake during the postpartum period is common with discontinuation of breastfeeding sometimes unnecessarily recommended for fear of adverse effects in the breastfed infant, while exposure through human milk is generally low. The assessment of risks associated with medication intake during breastfeeding is based, among other things, on the little clinical evidence available in specialized sources of information, and on pharmacokinetic principles. A decision-making support is presented to facilitate communication with mothers, foster medication adherence and prevent unnecessary interruption of breastfeeding.
