[Cardiac sarcoidosis: a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge].

Rev Med Suisse

April 2024

Service d'allergologie et d'immunologie clinique, Département de médecine, Hôpitaux universitaires de Genève, 1211 Genève 14.

The diagnosis of cardiac sarcoidosis, particularly in its isolated cardiac form, represents a major challenge due to non-specific symptoms and the limited sensitivity and specificity of basic cardiac investigations. MRI and metabolic PET-CT are important elements in the diagnostic process. Corticosteroids remain the cornerstone for the treatment of the inflammatory phase, in association with biological agents and steroid-sparing therapies.

A simplified version of rapid susceptibility testing of bacteria and yeasts using optical nanomotion detection.

Front Microbiol

March 2024

Laboratory of Biological Electron Microscopy (LBEM), Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Université de Lausanne, Lausanne, Switzerland.

We present a novel optical nanomotion-based rapid antibiotic and antifungal susceptibility test. The technique consisted of studying the effects of antibiotics or antifungals on the nanometric scale displacements of bacteria or yeasts to assess their sensitivity or resistance to drugs. The technique relies on a traditional optical microscope, a video camera, and custom-made image analysis software.

Small intestinal microbiota: from taxonomic composition to metabolism.

Trends Microbiol

October 2024

Department of Fundamental Microbiology, Université de Lausanne, Lausanne, Switzerland. Electronic address:

The small intestinal microbiota (SIM) is essential for gastrointestinal health, influencing digestion, immune modulation, and nutrient metabolism. Unlike the colonic microbiota, the SIM has been poorly characterized due to sampling challenges and ethical considerations. Current evidence suggests that the SIM consists of five core genera and additional segment-specific taxa.

Background: Accurate and fast measurement of physical activity is important for surveillance. Even though many physical activity questionnaires (PAQ) are currently used in research, it is unclear which of them is the most reliable, valid, and easy to use. This systematic review aimed to identify existing brief PAQs, describe and compare their measurement properties, and assess their level of readability.

Mobile cardiovascular prevention interventions are still uncommon in Switzerland. Mobile clinics improve access to prevention and enable new diagnoses of hypertension or hypercholesterolemia to be identified in a cost-effective way and has shown benefits in health behaviors such as physical activity, smoking cessation and medication compliance. The Unisanté Bus Santé is a mobile clinic run by nurses that offers screening for cardiovascular risk factors, health advice and, if necessary, referral to medical care.

Objective: This study was undertaken to develop a standardized grading system based on expert consensus for evaluating the level of confidence in the localization of the epileptogenic zone (EZ) as reported in published studies, to harmonize and facilitate systematic reviews in the field of epilepsy surgery.

Methods: We conducted a Delphi study involving 22 experts from 18 countries, who were asked to rate their level of confidence in the localization of the EZ for various theoretical clinical scenarios, using different scales. Information provided in these scenarios included one or several of the following data: magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings, invasive electroencephalography summary, and postoperative seizure outcome.

In this paper, I critically assess two recent proposals for an interpretation-independent understanding of non-relativistic quantum mechanics: the overlap strategy (Fraser & Vickers, 2022) and the textbook account (Egg, 2021). My argument has three steps. I first argue that they presume a Quinean-Carnapian meta-ontological framework that yields flat, structureless ontologies.

Digital media and screens are ubiquitous in the daily lives of adolescents. The screen-addicted portrait of young people has gained public attention, and health professionals are often consulted about the impact of screen use on teenagers' physical and mental health. Scientific evidence suggests that screen use is associated with risks and benefits that need to be weighed up in a nuanced way.

Supercritical fluid chromatography-mass spectrometry (SFC-MS) has proved to be a beneficial tool for sample analysis for a wide variety of compounds and, as such, has recently gained the attention of the anti-doping community. We have tested the applicability of SFC-MS for routine doping control analysing approximately 3 × 1000 identical anti-doping samples utilising SFC-MS instruments from three different vendors: Agilent Technologies, Waters Corporation and Shimadzu Corporation. A 'dilute and inject' approach either without or after hydrolysis of glucuronide metabolites was applied.

[The end of dialysis: the weariness to carry on].

Rev Med Suisse

February 2024

Service universitaire de psychiatrie de l'âge avancé, Département de psychiatrie, Centre hospitalier universitaire vaudois et Université de Lausanne, 1005 Lausanne.

Voluntary cessation of hemodialysis is a common cause of death in dialysis patients, often occurring related to an alteration in their quality of life. At the same time, psychiatric disorders such as depression or anxiety are common and often underestimated among these patients, that accentuate the suffering and complicate compliance with dialysis. In this paper some psychopathological conditions will be addressed, as well as the question of the patient's ambivalence towards dialysis and the clinical and ethical dilemma of caregivers: respect the patient's choice to stop treatment or keep them alive at all costs? A multidisciplinary approach, including palliative care, is essential to support the reflection and make balanced decisions while respecting patient autonomy.

Les politiques subtiles du autrement: Référents spirituels et militantisme progressiste en Suisse.

Soc Compass

December 2023

Haute école de santé Vaud, Institut de sciences sociales des religions, Université de Lausanne, Suisse.

This article considers the contemporary entanglement between spiritual registers and a progressive militant scene upon two fieldworks conducted in Switzerland (2015-2021) on contemporary encounters between religion, spirituality and ecology. My observations contrast common accusations upon the so-called depoliticization, narcissism or mere bricolage revolving around the popularization of new and self-centered modes of exercise of power in progressive militancy. If these spiritual registers are becoming more audible and legitimate in militancy, it is surely for what they enable to enunciate as well as for the technic of the 'selves' and the transformational imaginary they promote.
