Introduction: Bacterial meningitis still constitutes an important threat in Africa. In the meningitis belt, a clear seasonal pattern in the incidence of meningococcal disease during the dry season has been previously correlated with several environmental parameters like dust and sand particles as well as the Harmattan winds. In parallel, the evidence of seasonality in meningitis dynamics and its environmental variables remain poorly studied outside the meningitis belt.

Impact of patron saint festivities on cholera in three communes in Haiti.

BMC Public Health

October 2020

Equipe de Recherche sur les Maladies Infectieuses, Parasitaires et Tropicales, Université Quisqueya, 218 Avenue Jean-Paul II, Port-au-Prince, 6110, Haiti.

Background: Religious pilgrimages are among the anthropogenic factors known to be associated with the transmission of diarrheal diseases, such as cholera. This ecological study aimed to describe the evolution of cholera and assess the relationship between the implementation of the 'coup de poing' strategy during the patron saint festivities and the incidence of cholera in the three communes of Cabaret, Carrefour, and Croix-des-Bouquets in Haiti in 2017.

Methods: An epidemiological curve was produced to illustrate the evolution of cholera at the communal level.

Background: The travel distance from home to a treatment centre, which may impact the stage at diagnosis, has not been investigated for retinoblastoma, the most common childhood eye cancer. We aimed to investigate the travel burden and its impact on clinical presentation in a large sample of patients with retinoblastoma from Africa and Europe.

Methods: A cross-sectional analysis including 518 treatment-naïve patients with retinoblastoma residing in 40 European countries and 1024 treatment-naïve patients with retinoblastoma residing in 43 African countries.

Background: In most health areas, an information system is necessary for an effective fight against COVID-19. Current methods for surveillance of diseases with epidemic potential do not include monitoring the adherence to preventive measures. Furthermore, modern data collection methods depend often on technologies (e.

Background: Thrombotic microangiopathy is associated with HELLP syndrome, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, or atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS) during pregnancy. Standard laboratory and physical examinations can help distinguish between these three diseases promptly and guide their management. This is critical because their managements and prognoses differ considerably.

Introduction: Three previous individual participant data meta-analyses (IPDMAs) reported that, compared to the Structured Clinical Interview for the DSM (SCID), alternative reference standards, primarily the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI) and the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI), tended to misclassify major depression status, when controlling for depression symptom severity. However, there was an important lack of precision in the results.

Objective: To compare the odds of the major depression classification based on the SCID, CIDI, and MINI.

Background: The prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in African American individuals is high but whether this applies to native populations in sub-Saharan Africa is unclear.

Methods: In a cross-sectional study, we assessed the prevalence and risk factors of CKD in rural and urban adults in South Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo. Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was estimated using the CKD-Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) equations based on serum creatinine (eGFRcr), cystatin C (eGFRcys), or both markers (eGFRcr-cys), without ethnic correction factor.

[Spontaneous open book uterine rupture at 15 weeks' gestation in a pauciparous woman with scarred uterus: a case study].

Pan Afr Med J

December 2020

Département de Gynécologie et Obstétrique, Cliniques Universitaires de Kinshasa, Faculté de Médecine de l'Université de Kinshasa, Kinshasa, République Démocratique du Congo.

Article Synopsis
  • - Uterine rupture (RU) is still prevalent in developing countries despite health policies, largely due to risks such as C-section scars, often occurring during labor or late pregnancy.
  • - A case is presented of a 15-week pregnant woman with a scarred uterus who experienced spontaneous uterine rupture, indicated by symptoms of peritoneal irritation and confirmed through surgical exploration.
  • - The study emphasizes the importance of considering uterine rupture in patients with a history of uterine scars, even in early pregnancy, when they exhibit abdominal pain and signs of internal bleeding, regardless of their age or previous childbirth experiences.

Background: During past outbreaks of Ebola virus disease (EVD) and other infectious diseases, health service utilisation declined among the general public, delaying health seeking behaviour and affecting population health. From May to July 2018, the Democratic Republic of Congo experienced an outbreak of EVD in Equateur province. The Ministry of Public Health introduced a free care policy (FCP) in both affected and neighbouring health zones.

The surveillance of drug resistance among tuberculosis (TB) patients is central to preventing the spread of antimicrobial resistance. The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) is classified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a country with a high burden of TB and multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB), but there are no nationally representative data on drug resistance. In 2016-2017, a national survey of TB patients was conducted in 108 microscopy centres across all 11 provinces of the country using innovative molecular approaches.

Background: Anecdotal reports from DRC suggest that long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLIN) distributed through mass campaigns in DRC may not last the expected average three years. To provide the National Malaria Control Programme with evidence on physical and insecticidal durability of nets distributed during the 2016 mass campaign, two brands of LLIN, DawaPlus 2.0 and DuraNet©, were monitored in neighbouring and similar health zones in Sud Ubangi and Mongala Provinces.

October 2019

Department of Chemistry, Institute for Nanotechnology Innovation, Rhodes University, Makhanda, South Africa.

The optical limiting (OL) properties of a 3,5-di--benzyloxystyrylBODIPY dye with an -acetamidophenyl moiety at the -position have been investigated by using the open-aperture Z-scan technique at 532 nm with 10 ns laser pulses. There is a ca. 140 nm red shift of the main spectral band to 644 nm relative to the corresponding BODIPY core dye, due to the incorporation of -benzyloxystyryl groups at the 3,5-positions.
