Context: Several data from the literature have focused on the relationship between congenital sensorineural hearing loss, as well as acquired hearing loss, and their impact on cognition and the risk of dementia. However, few studies have been conducted on this subject in countries where access to hearing rehabilitation measures is limited. Thus, the objective of the present study was to investigate the relationship between sensorineural hearing loss and cognitive disorders in a correlational approach.

Background: At the beginning of the 2018-2020 outbreak of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), no vaccine had been licensed. However, cluster-randomized evidence from Guinea in 2015 had indicated that ring vaccination around new cases (targeting contacts and contacts-of-contacts) with the use of single-dose live-replicating rVSV-ZEBOV-GP vaccine reduced EVD rates starting 10 days after vaccination. Thus, ring vaccination was added to the standard control measures for that outbreak.

In this Review, we examine the concurrent outbreaks of mpox in Africa, focusing on clade 1a, the newly emerged clade 1b, and clade 2b lineage A, and how they differ from the 2022 global outbreak caused by clade 2b lineage B.1. Historically, clades 1a and 2a have caused sporadic, small outbreaks in central and west Africa, respectively, primarily through zoonotic transmission.

Background: Sickle cell disease (SCD) disrupts oxygen transport due to the abnormal shape and rigidity of red blood cells, leading to hemolysis. Hemolysis, a major co-morbidity in SCD, is indicated by elevated levels of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH). Arginine depletion, which is essential for nitric oxide (NO) synthesis, contributes to various complications in SCD.

Municipal solid waste (MSW) management poses substantial challenges in rapidly urbanizing areas, with implications for both the environment and public health. This study focuses on the city of Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo, investigating whether the presence or absence of solid waste collection services results in varying health and economic impacts, and additionally, seeking to establish a correlation between residing in proximity to dumpsites and the prevalence of diseases like malaria and typhoid, thereby providing a comprehensive understanding of the health implications tied to waste exposure. Health data were collected through survey questionnaires, and the geospatial distribution of 19 dumpsites was analyzed using Google Earth Pro 7.

Introduction: Cerebral malaria (CM) is a devastating disease and better understanding of etiologies of the resulting neurologic injury is needed. The purpose of this study is to describe the day-to-day (DTD) pulsatility index (PI) change measured by transcranial Doppler ultrasound (TCD), a novel measure of cerebral and vascular changes, in children with CM.
Methods: A retrospective analysis of 122 children in sub-Saharan Africa with CM and 3 or more sequential TCD measurements was performed.

Recent reports raise concerns on the changing epidemiology of mpox in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). High-quality genomes were generated for 337 patients from 14/26 provinces to document whether the increase in number of cases is due to zoonotic spillover events or viral evolution, with enrichment of APOBEC3 mutations linked to human adaptation. Our study highlights two patterns of transmission contributing to the source of human cases.

Immunisation is a high priority for improving health outcomes. Yet, in many low-income and middle-income countries, achieving coverage targets independently is hindered by lack of domestic resources and reliance on partners' support. Both the 2001 Abuja Declaration and 2016 Addis Declaration were key political commitments to improving immunisation coverage; however, many signatories have yet to meet international targets.

Introduction Et Objectif: Une réponse efficace aux crises sanitaires telle la maladie à virus Ebola (MVE) nécessite l'engagement des communautés.

Since 2017, the Institute for Nanotechnology Innovation at Rhodes University has studied the optical limiting properties of boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) dyes with respect to high-intensity nanosecond timescale laser pulses. Concerns over the irresponsible use of laser pointers in the context of aviation safety have provided a need for materials that can readily transmit light under ambient conditions while rapidly attenuating intense incident laser pulses. The structural flexibility of the BODIPY chromophore facilitates the red shift of the main BODIPY spectral band that typically lies at 500 nm to the red end of the visible and the near-infrared through the introduction of vinylene groups at the 3,5-positions or an aza-nitrogen atom.

Cerebral malaria (CM) is a devastating disease globally. Transcranial Doppler ultrasound (TCD) has identified five different phenotypes of deranged cerebrovascular hemodynamics in children with CM, each associated with different outcomes. For TCD to be used as a point of care neurodiagnostic and neuromonitoring tool in CM patients, proper interpretation of examinations is paramount.

The objective of this study was to evaluate maize production and the economic profitability of weed management techniques. Field trials were conducted at the Kasapa farm during the 2021/22 growing seasons using a split-plot design with three repetitions. The main factor was the herbicides applied in pre-emergence alone (2L ha: acetochlor, bentazon, imazethapyr and 60 g ha chlorimuron-ethyl), then mixed (1L ha: acetochlor plus bentazon plus imazethapyr plus 30g hachlorimuron-ethyl), manual hoeing (3-5WAS) including the non-weeding.

From the root barks of a Central African tree Millettia dubia De Wild. (Fabaceae), ten previously undescribed oleanane-type glycosides were isolated by various chromatographic protocols. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods, mainly 2D NMR experiments and mass spectrometry, as mono- and bidesmosidic glycosides of mesembryanthemoidigenic acid, hederagenin and oleanolic acid.
