Background: We describe severe morbidity and health care resource utilization (HCRU) among HIV-infected children on antiretroviral therapy (ART) in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire.
Methods: All HIV-infected children enrolled in an HIV-care program (2004-2009) were eligible for ART initiation until database closeout, death, ART interruption, or loss to follow-up. We calculated incidence rates (IRs) of density per 100 child-years (CYs) for severe morbidity, HCRU (outpatient care and inpatient care), and associated factors using frailty models with a Weibull distribution.

In the title mol-ecule, C17H12O5, the chromen-2-one ring and the 4-meth-oxy-benzoate side chain are inclined to one another at a dihedral angle of 69.82 (9)°. The crystal structure features parallel sheets of centrosymmetric R2(2)(6) dimers joined by a C(7) chain, resulting in centrosymetric tetra-mers of hydrogen-bonded mol-ecules with graph-set motif R4(4)(40).

Ralstonia solanacearum is an important soil borne bacterial plant pathogen causing bacterial wilt on many important crops. To better monitor epidemics, efficient tools that can identify and discriminate populations are needed. In this study, we assessed variable number of tandem repeats (VNTR) genotyping as a new tool for epidemiological surveillance of R.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Extracts of leaves from different species of the genus Alchornea have been used for centuries to treat a variety of medicinal problems in tropical Africa. However, little is known about the high-molecular weight active components conferring therapeutic properties to these extracts.
Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the immunomodulatory activity of polysaccharides isolated from the leaves of Alchornea cordifolia.

Schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis are a global public health problem, especially among schoolchildren. The purpose of this study was to determine the overall and specific prevalences of intestinal helminth infection and to assess the clinical efficacy, tolerance, and safety of praziquantel and albendazole for treating it. A descriptive cross-sectional study based on random sampling with one degree of freedom was conducted from November 2006 to March 2007 in the primary schools of Biankouma, Côte d'Ivoire.

The aims of this study were, first, to carry out a molecular characterization of CSSV isolates from the main outbreaks in Côte d'Ivoire; second, determine their phylogenetic position in relation to isolates already discovered in Togo and Ghana; and, finally, study their geographical distribution to understand the dispersal of the virus. Additionally, this study was intended to enable the implementation and validation of a polyvalent molecular diagnosis assay for CSSV.

Objectives: The current study attempts to determine whether thiamine (B1 vitamin) deficiency and chronic alcohol-related thiamine-deficient (TD) status, disturb maternal behavior towards pups.
Methods: During gestation and lactation, Wistar rat dams were exposed to the following treatments: (i) prenatal TD dams; (ii) perinatal TD dams; (iii) postnatal TD dams; (iv) 12% alcohol/water drinking mothers; (v) ad libitum control dams. Pair-feeding treatments controlled malnutrition related to thiamine deficiency; (vi) prenatal pair-fed (PF) dams; (vii) perinatal PF dams; (viii) postnatal PF dams and included also the control of alcohol consummation: (ix) PF saccharose dams.

A health survey on access to water and a chemical and bacteriological analysis were conducted between May and October 2010 on 200 tanks of drinking water in 669 households in a peri-urban area of Abidjan. The results show that 70% of the population used piped water and that 64% of the population used approximately 20 litres of water per person per day. The study found that households that used alternative sources of water spent more than those that used piped water (p < 0,001).

The surface properties and functionality of an illite-containing clay mineral in alkaline solutions containing increasing quantities of calcium hydroxide were investigated using FTIR monitored pyridine adsorption at various temperatures. Results showed that the binding behavior of electron donor pyridine molecules to illite platelets is mostly governed by electron acceptor sites located at the edges of the clay particles. The binding of bulky hydrated calcium ions at the surface of the illite platelets decreases the surface area of illite.

The functional colopathies are frequent in digestive pathology and are particularly badly felt by African patients. The authors, after the determination of the masticatory efficiency score (classification of Verkindere) of 100 subjects affected by colopathies and diagnosed in the service of gastroenterology of Cocody University Hospital (Abidjan), attempt to determine the importance of the masticatory deficiency in functional colopathies. Among the toothless subjects with functional colopathies, the restoration of the masticatory efficiency by functional prosthetic rehabilitation constitutes an essential therapeutic act in the reduction of the symptoms of the functional colopathies and the improvement of the comfort of the patients.

The results showed that the more coffee cherries quantity on the drying area was important, the slower they dried. Indeed, the drying durations were 12, 17, 21, 26, 31 and 32 days respectively for the lots of 10 kg, 20 kg, 30 kg, 40 kg, 50 kg and 60 kg of cherries by square meter of drying area.
