Center for Computational Intelligence to Predict Health and Environmental Risks - CIPHER, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Charlotte, NC, USA.

Glossina species are known to transmit African Trypanosomiasis, one of the most important infectious diseases for both livestock and humans in sub-Saharan Africa. Therefore, the aim of this study was to characterize trapped Glossina spp. from The Gambia using morphological and molecular techniques in relation to the vegetation cover types.

Cost-effective therapy of neglected and tropical diseases such as malaria requires everlasting drug discovery efforts due to the rapidly emerging drug resistance of the plasmodium parasite. We have carried out computational design of new inhibitors of the enoyl-acyl carrier protein reductase (ENR) of (ENR) using computer-aided combinatorial and pharmacophore-based molecular design. The Molecular Mechanics Poisson-Boltzmann Surface Area (MM-PBSA) complexation QSAR model was developed for triclosan-based inhibitors (TCL) and a significant correlation was established between the calculated relative Gibbs free energies of complex formation (∆∆Gcom) between ENR and TCL and the observed inhibitory potencies of the enzyme (IC50exp) for a training set of 20 known TCL analogues.

While vaccines are now authorized for use against the SARS-CoV2 virus, they remain inaccessible for much of the world and widespread hesitancy persists. Ending the COVID-19 pandemic depends on continued prevention behaviors such as mask wearing, distancing, hand hygiene, and limiting large gatherings. Research in low- and middle-income countries has focused on the prevalence of adherence and demographic determinants, but there is a need for a nuanced understanding of why people do or do not practice a given prevention behavior.

Primates, represented by 521 species, are distributed across 91 countries primarily in the Neotropic, Afrotropic, and Indo-Malayan realms. Primates inhabit a wide range of habitats and play critical roles in sustaining healthy ecosystems that benefit human and nonhuman communities. Approximately 68% of primate species are threatened with extinction because of global pressures to convert their habitats for agricultural production and the extraction of natural resources.

Objective: We report in this work the efficacy of highly active antiretrovirals (ARVs) alone in the treatment of diffuse infiltrative lymphocytosis syndrome (DILS) without the use of corticosteroids, which appears risky in patients living with HIV.

Observation: This is a 60-year-old HIV-positive patient, discovered during the etiological workup of renal failure, which revealed a non-nephrotic glomerular profile. The renal biopsy found an interstitial infiltrate of CD8 suggestive of DILS.

Dog rabies control in West and Central Africa: A review.

Acta Trop

Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, P.O. Box, Basel CH-4002, Switzerland; University of Basel, Petersplatz 1, Basel CH-4001, Switzerland. Electronic address:

Rabies is a neglected but preventable zoonotic disease that predominantly affects the most vulnerable populations living in remote rural areas of resource-limited countries. To date, every country on the African mainland is considered endemic for dog-mediated rabies with an estimated 21'500 human rabies deaths occurring each year. In 2018, the United Against Rabies collaboration launched the Global Strategic Plan to end human deaths from dog-mediated rabies by 2030.

Cocoa production is affected by the black pod disease caused by several Phytophthora species that bring, about each year, an estimated loss of 44% of world production. Chemical control remains expensive and poses an enormous risk of poisoning for the users and the environment. Biocontrol by using antagonistic microorganisms has become an alternative to the integrated control strategy against this disease.

Impending extinction crisis of the world's primates: Why primates matter.

Sci Adv

January 2017

Nonhuman primates, our closest biological relatives, play important roles in the livelihoods, cultures, and religions of many societies and offer unique insights into human evolution, biology, behavior, and the threat of emerging diseases. They are an essential component of tropical biodiversity, contributing to forest regeneration and ecosystem health. Current information shows the existence of 504 species in 79 genera distributed in the Neotropics, mainland Africa, Madagascar, and Asia.

Background: Acute bacterial cellulitis of the leg (erysipelas) is a common problem involving considerable morbidity in dermatology practice in Africa. Previous studies conducted in Europe and North Africa have highlighted lymphoedema and toe-web intertrigo as independent factors associated with leg erysipelas. The aim of this case-control study was to identify risk factors associated with leg erysipelas in sub-Saharan Africa, within a different socio-economic and culture context.

Compared to humans, non-human primates have very little control over their vocal production. Nonetheless, some primates produce various call combinations, which may partially offset their lack of acoustic flexibility. A relevant example is male Campbell's monkeys (Cercopithecus campbelli), which give one call type ('Krak') to leopards, while the suffixed version of the same call stem ('Krak-oo') is given to unspecific danger.

Despite the emergence of artemisinin resistance, few alternative non-ACTs, including atovaquone-proguanil, are currently available.

Methods: Plasmodium falciparum-infected Cameroonian children ≤5 years old (n = 338) were randomly assigned to artesunate-amodiaquine, atovaquone-proguanil, or artesunate-atovaquone-proguanil treatment groups and followed for 28 days, according to the standard World Health Organization protocol.

Molecular phylogeny of hantaviruses harbored by insectivorous bats in Côte d'Ivoire and Vietnam.

Viruses

April 2014

Pacific Center for Emerging Infectious Diseases Research, John A. Burns School of Medicine, University of Hawaii at Manoa, Honolulu, HI 96813, USA.

The recent discovery of genetically distinct hantaviruses in multiple species of shrews and moles prompted a further exploration of their host diversification by analyzing frozen, ethanol-fixed and RNAlater®-preserved archival tissues and fecal samples from 533 bats (representing seven families, 28 genera and 53 species in the order Chiroptera), captured in Asia, Africa and the Americas in 1981-2012, using RT-PCR. Hantavirus RNA was detected in Pomona roundleaf bats (Hipposideros pomona) (family Hipposideridae), captured in Vietnam in 1997 and 1999, and in banana pipistrelles (Neoromicia nanus) (family Vespertilionidae), captured in Côte d'Ivoire in 2011. Phylogenetic analysis, based on the full-length S- and partial M- and L-segment sequences using maximum likelihood and Bayesian methods, demonstrated that the newfound hantaviruses formed highly divergent lineages, comprising other recently recognized bat-borne hantaviruses in Sierra Leone and China.
