Predicting emergency department admissions using a machine-learning algorithm: a proof of concept with retrospective study.

Introduction: Overcrowding in emergency departments (ED) is a major public health issue, leading to increased workload and exhaustion for the teams, resulting poor outcomes. It seems interesting to be able to predict the admissions of patients in the ED.

Aim: The main objective of this study was to build and test a prediction tool for ED admissions using artificial intelligence.

Evaluation of rheumatoid arthritis-associated interstitial lung disease in patients treated with JAK inhibitors: a MAJIK-SFR cohort study.

Objective: To examine the course of interstitial lung disease associated with rheumatoid arthritis (RA-ILD) in France on treatment with Janus kinase inhibitors (JAKis) using the MAJIK-SFR registry.

Methods: Prospective national multicentre observational study identifying patients with RA-ILD from the MAJIK-SFR registry. Pulmonary assessment data were collected at JAKi initiation and follow-up visits (6 months, 12 months and a median of 21 months postinclusion), including chest high-resolution CT (HRCT), pulmonary function tests (forced vital capacity (FVC) and diffusing capacity of the lungs for carbon monoxide (DLCO)), acute exacerbations of ILD, respiratory infections and lung cancers.

Motivation: Mitochondria are essential for cellular metabolism and are inherently flexible to allow correct function in a wide range of tissues. We investigated people living with HIV (PLWH)'s exposure to COVID-19 pandemic stressors and their association with distress, psychological growth, and substance use. PLWH in the ANRS CO3 AQUIVIH-NA cohort's QuAliV study (Nouvelle Aquitaine, France) completed an adapted CAIR Lab Pandemic Impact Questionnaire (C-PIQ) and reported substance use between 9/2021 to 3/2022. We described cumulative stressor exposure (score 0-16) and explored variation by PLWH characteristics (demographic, HIV-related, risk factors, psychosocial).

Lymph node metastasis in level IIb neck dissection for clinically node-negative oral squamous cell carcinoma patients: an 11-year retrospective study.

The most common complication associated with selective neck dissection is spinal accessory nerve dysfunction and shoulder disability, which result from level IIb dissection. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the incidence of level IIb lymph node metastasis in clinically node-negative (cN0) oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) patients. Patients presenting with cN0 OSCC between November 2012 and November 2023 were included retrospectively.

Cracking susceptibility of full-sibs of a cross of a cracking tolerant and cracking susceptible sweet cherry: Relation to cuticle characteristics, microcracking and calcium.

Rain cracking compromises quality and quantity of sweet cherries worldwide. Cracking susceptibility differs among genotypes. The objective was to (1) phenotype the progeny of a cross between a tolerant and a susceptible sweet cherry cultivar for cuticle mass per unit area, strain release on cuticle isolation, cuticular microcracking and calcium/dry mass ratio and (2) relate these characteristics to cracking susceptibilities evaluated in laboratory immersion assays and published multiyear field observations.

Phenotype Spectrum of TRPM3-Associated Disorders.

Objective: Monoallelic variants in the transient receptor potential melastatin-related type 3 gene (TRPM3) have been associated with neurodevelopmental manifestations, but knowledge on the clinical manifestations and treatment options is limited. We characterized the clinical spectrum, highlighting particularly the epilepsy phenotype, and the effect of treatments.

Methods: We analyzed retrospectively the phenotypes and genotypes of 43 individuals with TRPM3 variants, acquired from GeneMatcher and collaborations (n = 21), and through a systematic literature search (n = 22).

Impact of Harsh Grinding on the Structure and Color of LiCoPO and LiNiPO Pigments.

LiCoPO and LiNiPO phosphate pigments have colorations very close to the primary colors of the subtractive system: magenta and yellow, respectively. These two pigments are therefore of great interest in a variety of applications, including e-reader devices. However, the need to reduce their crystallite size in order to formulate stable electrophoretic inks has revealed that aggressive milling results in significant color changes, particularly for cobalt-based pigments.

Targeted microwave ablation of localised prostate cancer: Initial results of VIOLETTE trial.

Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the precision and safety of targeted microwave ablation (TMA) using organ-based tracking (OBT) fusion, in patients with intermediate risk prostate cancer.

Patients And Method: We conducted a prospective, multicentric trial. Eligible patients had a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) < 20 ng/mL, a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-visible index tumour of Gleason score 3 + 4, with largest axis ≤15 mm and distant of at least 5 mm from the rectum and apex.

Root system architecture plasticity with beneficial rhizosphere microbes: Current findings and future perspectives.

The rhizosphere microbiota, often referred to as the plant's "second genome" plays a critical role in modulating root system architecture (RSA). Despite this, existing methods to analyze root phenotypes in the context of root-microbe interactions remain limited, and the precise mechanisms affecting RSA by microbes are still not fully understood. This review comprehensively evaluates current root phenotyping techniques relevant to plant-microbe interactions, discusses their limitations, and explores future directions for integrating advanced technologies to elucidate microbial roles in altering RSA.

Background: Many patients diagnosed with gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) have persistent symptoms despite proton pump inhibitor (PPI) therapy.

Aims: The aim of this consensus is to provide evidence-based statements to guide clinicians caring for patients with refractory reflux-like symptoms (rRLS) or refractory GERD.

Methods: This consensus was developed by the International Working Group for the Classification of Oesophagitis.

From spastic paraplegia to infantile neurodegenerative disorder: Expanding the phenotypic spectrum associated with biallelic SPAST variants.

Purpose: Heterozygous pathogenic variants in SPAST are known to cause Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia 4 (SPG4), the most common form of HSP, characterized by progressive bilateral lower limbs spasticity with frequent sphincter disorders. However, there are very few descriptions in the literature of patients carrying biallelic variants in SPAST.

Methods: Targeted Sanger sequencing, panel sequencing and exome sequencing were used to identify the genetic causes in 9 patients from 6 unrelated families with symptoms of HSP or infantile neurodegenerative disorder.

SHIVA-CMB: a deep-learning-based robust cerebral microbleed segmentation tool trained on multi-source T2*GRE- and susceptibility-weighted MRI.

Cerebral microbleeds (CMB) represent a feature of cerebral small vessel disease (cSVD), a prominent vascular contributor to age-related cognitive decline, dementia, and stroke. They are visible as spherical hypointense signals on T2*- or susceptibility-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences. An increasing number of automated CMB detection methods being proposed are based on supervised deep learning (DL).

The walnut tree as a source of progesterone for reproductive control in goats.

Intravaginal sponges impregnated with the progesterone (P4) analogue fluorogestone acetate (FGA) induce synchronous oestrous behaviour and normal ovulatory cycle in goats. To explore alternatives using natural P4 from plants, we developed a method of ethanolic extraction and a specific enzyme immunoassay (EIA) to measure P4 in the different parts of the walnut tree Juglans regia. We found a very high concentration of P4, specifically in the leaves of the three most common French varieties (∼100 mg/kg of DM) but not in flowers, fruits, septa, husk, oil or cake.

MRI-guided focal laser ablation (MRI-FLA) is an emerging minimally invasive technique for treating localized prostate tumors, aiming to provide effective cancer control while minimizing side effects. This meta-analysis systematically evaluates the clinical outcomes, technical efficacy, and complication rates associated with MRI-FLA to better understand its therapeutic potential and safety profile in prostate cancer management. In July 2024, PubMed (MEDLINE) was searched for eligible trials using the PRISMA guidelines.

Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia Linked to Abnormal Splicing From an AIMP1 Missense Variant.

Hereditary spastic paraplegias (HSP) are a diverse group of neurodegenerative diseases characterized by lower limb spasticity and weakness. To date, over 80 genes have been associated with HSP, but many families remain without a molecular diagnosis. In this study, linkage analysis and whole-exome sequencing (WES) were performed to identify the causal gene in a HSP family with autosomal recessive inheritance.

Influence of pericardium on ventricular mechanical interdependence in an isolated biventricular working pig heart model.

The pericardium plays an important role in mechanical interactions between the right (RV) and left (LV) ventricles, referred to as ventricular interdependence. However, the exact mechanisms of its supportive role remain unknown. The present study aimed to evaluate specifically ventricular interdependence in a model of isolated biventricular working heart of large mammal, which is in absence of neurohormonal influence or series interactions, and to evaluate the impacts of intact pericardium on this phenomenon.
