Gender Differences in the Prediction of Acute Stress Disorder From Peritraumatic Dissociation and Distress Among Victims of Violent Crimes.

Peritraumatic dissociation and distress are strong predictors of acute stress disorder (ASD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) development. However, there is limited data concerning gender differences in these relations, particularly among victims of violent crimes (VVC). The objective of this study is to examine whether peritraumatic dissociation and distress predict the number of ASD symptoms differently for men and women VVC.

Impact of maternal iron deficiency on the auditory functions in the young and adult guinea pig.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the hearing function in the guinea pig offspring at post-natal day (PNd) 24 and PNd84 born from dams suffering from iron deficiency during pregnancy and lactation by using the auditory brainstem response (ABR).

Method: Female guinea pigs (n = 24 per dietary group) were fed an iron sufficient (IS) diet (114 mg/kg) or an iron deficient (ID) diet (11.7 mg/kg) during the gestation and lactation periods.

Young adults' experiences of neighbourhood smoking-related norms and practices: A qualitative study exploring place-based social inequalities in smoking.

In this qualitative exploratory study we asked how smoking among young adults relates to the local neighbourhood context to better understand place-based social inequalities in smoking. We used data collected through focus groups with young adults from four economically diverse neighbourhoods in Montreal, Canada. Using the collective lifestyles framework to guide data analysis, we examined within and between neighbourhood social norms, practices, and agency.

Here, it is shown that confidence intervals of the mean (CI s) can be adjusted based on whether the objective is to highlight differences between measures or not and based on the experimental design (within- or between-group designs). Women, weight, poverty and menopause: understanding health practices in a context of chronic disease prevention.

Socioeconomic inequalities in health persist despite major investments in illness prevention campaigns and universal healthcare systems. In this context, the increased risks of chronic diseases of specific sub-groups of vulnerable populations should be further investigated. The objective of this qualitative study is to examine the interaction between socioeconomic status (SES) and body weight in order to understand underprivileged women's increased vulnerability to chronic diseases after menopause.

Does unilateral insular resection disturb personality? A study with epileptic patients.

The insula is now regarded as a potential site of epileptogenesis in drug-resistant epilepsy, and the advent of microsurgical techniques has allowed insular cortectomy to become a treatment of choice when the insular cortex is involved in the seizure focus. However, considering the evidence of an insular role in socio-emotional processing, it remains unknown whether these cortical resections disturb personality and social behavior as experienced in daily life. We examined such changes in a group of patients (n=19) who underwent epilepsy surgery involving partial or complete resection of the insula, and compared them to a group of patients who underwent standard temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) surgery (n=19) as a lesion-control group.

The primary objective was to produce a French-Canadian translation of AMSTAR (a measurement tool to assess systematic reviews) and to examine the validity of the translation's contents. The secondary and tertiary objectives were to assess the inter-rater reliability and factorial construct validity of this French-Canadian version of AMSTAR. A modified approach to Vallerand's methodology (1989) for cross-cultural validation was used.

The fate of retrotransposed processed genes in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Processed genes are functional genes that have arisen as a result of the retrotransposition of mRNA molecules. We found 6 genes that generated processed genes in the common ancestor of five Brassicaceae species (Arabidopsis thaliana, Arabidopsis lyrata, Capsella rubella, Brassica rapa and Thellungiella parvula). These processed genes have therefore been kept for at least 30millionyears.
