The success of the bloom-forming cyanobacteria Planktothrix: Genotypes variability supports variable responses to light and temperature stress.

Harmful Algae

August 2022

UMR 7245 Molécules de Communication et Adaptations des Microorganismes (MCAM), Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle, CNRS, CP 39, 57 rue Cuvier, Paris, 75005, France. Electronic address:

Cyanobacterial blooms can modify the dynamic of aquatic ecosystems and have harmful consequences for human activities. Moreover, cyanobacteria can produce a variety of cyanotoxins, including microcystins, but little is known about the role of environmental factors on the prevalence of microcystin producers in the cyanobacterial bloom dynamics. This study aimed to better understand the success of Planktothrix in various environments by unveiling the variety of strategies governing cell responses to sudden changes in light intensity and temperature.

Plant root growth is dramatically reduced in compacted soils, affecting the growth of the whole plant. Through a model experiment coupling force and kinematics measurements, we probed the force-growth relationship of a primary root contacting a stiff resisting obstacle, which mimics the strongest soil impedance variation encountered by a growing root. The growth of maize roots just emerging from a corseting agarose gel and contacting a force sensor (acting as an obstacle) was monitored by time-lapse imaging simultaneously to the force.

Sporulation in starts with the formation of two adjacent cells and proceeds with the engulfment of the smaller one, the forespore, by the larger one, the mother cell. This critical step involves a core set of conserved genes, some transcribed in the forespore, such as , and others transcribed in the mother cell, such as the eight-gene operon. A model has been proposed in which the SpoIIIA and the SpoIIQ proteins form a channel connecting the mother cell and the forespore, playing the role of a secretion apparatus allowing the mother cell to nurture the fully engulfed forespore.

Malignant pleural mesothelioma is a rare and aggressive neoplasm, which has primarily been attributed to the exposure to asbestos fibers (83% of cases); yet, despite a ban of using asbestos in many countries, the incidence of malignant pleural mesothelioma failed to decline worldwide. While little progress has been made in malignant pleural mesothelioma diagnosis, bevacizumab at first, then followed by double immunotherapy (nivolumab plus ipilumumab), were all shown to improve survival in large phase III randomized trials. The morphological analysis of the histological subtyping remains the primary indicator for therapeutic decision making at an advanced disease stage, while a platinum-based chemotherapy regimen combined with pemetrexed, either with or without bevacizumab, is still the main treatment option.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates a two-phase MDCT protocol for detecting hepatic nodules in cirrhotic patients, aiming to improve detection rates compared to the traditional ultrasound screenings, which have a low sensitivity of 47%.
  • A total of 373 patients with suspected HCC nodules were examined using a four-phase MDCT, revealing that 99.1% of typical HCC nodules were identifiable in the arterial and delayed phases.
  • The two-phase protocol showed a significant reduction in irradiation dose by 55.4%, making it a potentially safer and more effective alternative to ultrasound for HCC screening every 6 months.

Antibiotic-resistant bacteria, and more specifically, carbapenem-producing Enterobacterales (CPE) strains, are increasing worldwide. Despite their growing prevalence, in most high-income countries, the detection of CPE is still considered a low-frequency event. Sporadically, patients co-colonized with distinct CPE strains and/or different carbapenemase enzymes are detected.

One of the grand challenges in heliophysics is the characterization of coronal mass ejection (CME) magnetic structure and evolution from eruption at the Sun through heliospheric propagation. At present, the main difficulties are related to the lack of direct measurements of the coronal magnetic fields and the lack of 3D in-situ measurements of the CME body in interplanetary space. Nevertheless, the evolution of a CME magnetic structure can be followed using a combination of multi-point remote-sensing observations and multi-spacecraft in-situ measurements as well as modeling.
