Spin-helix Larmor mode.

Sci Rep

February 2018

Institut des Nanosciences de Paris, CNRS/Université Paris VI, Paris, 75005, France.

A two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) with equal-strength Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling sustains persistent helical spin-wave states, which have remarkably long lifetimes. In the presence of an in-plane magnetic field, there exist single-particle excitations that have the character of propagating helical spin waves. For magnon-like collective excitations, the spin-helix texture reemerges as a robust feature, giving rise to a decoupling of spin-orbit and electronic many-body effects.

Effects of partial selfing on the equilibrium genetic variance, mutation load, and inbreeding depression under stabilizing selection.

Evolution

April 2018

CNRS, UMI 3614 Evolutionary Biology and Ecology of Algae,, 29688 Roscoff, France.

The mating system of a species is expected to have important effects on its genetic diversity. In this article, we explore the effects of partial selfing on the equilibrium genetic variance V , mutation load L, and inbreeding depression δ under stabilizing selection acting on a arbitrary number n of quantitative traits coded by biallelic loci with additive effects. When the U/n ratio is low (where U is the total haploid mutation rate on selected traits) and effective recombination rates are sufficiently high, genetic associations between loci are negligible and the genetic variance, mutation load, and inbreeding depression are well predicted by approximations based on single-locus models.

Med Oncol

February 2018

Department of Neurosurgery, Groupe Hospitalier Pitié-Salpétrière, APHP, 47-83 Boulevard de l'Hôpital, Batiment Babinski, 75013, Paris, France.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines how certain systemic chemotherapy treatments can influence the development of brain metastases in cancer patients, highlighting that some anticancer drugs may accelerate metastatic progression, particularly in animal models and suggested in humans.
  • Data from 413 patients treated for brain metastasis showed median time to first brain metastasis was 13.1 months, with varied brain metastasis-free survival (bMFS) times depending on the primary cancer type, ranging from 1.5 months for lung cancer to 50.9 months for breast cancer.
  • Notably, patients with a lung primary tumor and those treated with taxane chemotherapy faced significantly shorter bMFS, while having a breast primary tumor was linked to

Magnetic fields are ubiquitous in the Universe. The energy density of these fields is typically comparable to the energy density of the fluid motions of the plasma in which they are embedded, making magnetic fields essential players in the dynamics of the luminous matter. The standard theoretical model for the origin of these strong magnetic fields is through the amplification of tiny seed fields via turbulent dynamo to the level consistent with current observations.

Until 1996, AIDS was the leading cause of deaths from HIV infection. In 2010, because of introduction of powerful antiretroviral therapies, AIDS represented less than 25% of deaths. Cancer has become the leading cause of death in this population, and, because of smoking and immunosuppression, lung cancer risk is more important than in general population.

Betweenness has been used in a number of marine studies to identify portions of sea that sustain the connectivity of whole marine networks. Herein we highlight the need of methodological exactness in the calculation of betweenness when graph theory is applied to marine connectivity studies based on transfer probabilities. We show the inconsistency in calculating betweeness directly from transfer probabilities and propose a new metric for the node-to-node distance that solves it.

Study Question: Could the follicle proteome be mapped by identifying specific proteins that are common or differ between three developmental stages from the secondary follicle (SF) to the antrum-like stage?

Summary Answer: From a total of 1401 proteins identified in the follicles, 609 were common to the three developmental stages investigated and 444 were found uniquely at one of the stages.

What Is Known Already: The importance of the follicle as a functional structure has been recognized; however, up-to-date the proteome of the whole follicle has not been described. A few studies using proteomics have previously reported on either isolated fully-grown oocytes before or after meiosis resumption or cumulus cells.

Cryptochromes are evolutionarily conserved blue light receptors with many roles throughout plant growth and development. They undergo conformational changes in response to light enabling interaction with multiple downstream signaling partners. Recently, it has been shown that cryptochromes also synthesize reactive oxygen species (ROS) in response to light, suggesting the possibility of an alternate signaling mechanism.
