Locally adaptive inversions in structured populations.

Genetics

July 2024

Department of Genetics, Evolution, and Environment, University College London, Gower Street, London WC1E 6BT, UK.

Inversions have been proposed to facilitate local adaptation, by linking together locally coadapted alleles at different loci. Prior work addressing this question theoretically has considered the spread of inversions in "continent-island" scenarios in which there is a unidirectional flow of maladapted migrants into the island population. In this setting, inversions capturing locally adaptive haplotypes are most likely to invade when selection is weak, because stronger local selection (i) more effectively purges maladaptive alleles and (ii) generates linkage disequilibrium between adaptive alleles, thus lessening the advantage of inversions.

Gametic selection favours polyandry and selfing.

PLoS Genet

February 2024

School of Biological Sciences, University of East Anglia, Norwich, Norfolk, United Kingdom.

Competition among pollen or sperm (gametic selection) can cause evolution. Mating systems shape the intensity of gametic selection by determining the competitors involved, which can in turn cause the mating system itself to evolve. We model the bidirectional relationship between gametic selection and mating systems, focusing on variation in female mating frequency (monandry-polyandry) and self-fertilisation (selfing-outcrossing).

Limited applicability and implementation of the international oncology treatments guidelines in low- and middle-income countries, an example from the Mediterranean area borders.

Cancer Radiother

September 2023

Department of Radiation Oncology, Institute de cancérologie de l'Ouest (ICO) centre René-Gauducheau, Saint-Herblain, France; Université de Nantes, Nantes, France.

The quality of cancer care in the modern era is based on a precise diagnosis and personalized therapy according to patients and their disease based on validated guidelines with a high level of evidence. During cancer patients' management, the objective is first to make an accurate diagnosis and then offer the best treatment, validated beforehand in a multidisciplinary board meeting, with the best benefit/risk ratio. In the context of many low- and middle-income countries, the limited available means do not allow an adequate offer, resulting in non-optimal patients' care.

Dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) is a limiting nutrient in the physiology of scleractinian corals. Anthropogenic addition of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) to coastal reefs increases the seawater DIN:DIP ratio and further increases P limitation, which is detrimental to coral health. The effects of imbalanced DIN:DIP ratios on coral physiology require further investigation in coral species other than the most studied branching corals.

Article Synopsis
  • Many studies show African American and Asian populations have worse IVF outcomes than Caucasians, but previous research faced biases such as socioeconomic factors and inconsistent definitions of ethnic groups.
  • This study aimed to analyze IVF results based on geographic origin in a French hospital where all groups had equal access to care, focusing on ovarian response, pregnancy rates, and live births.
  • The study found no major differences in IVF outcomes among European, Sub-Saharan African, and Maghrebi women, but noted higher cancellation rates and gonadotropin doses in Sub-Saharan African women compared to others.

Phosphorus (P) is an essential but limiting nutrient for coral growth due to low concentrations of dissolved inorganic concentrations (DIP) in reef waters. P limitation is often exacerbated when concentrations of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) increase in the reef. To increase their access to phosphorus, corals can use organic P dissolved in seawater (DOP).

In conventional gases and plasmas, it is known that heat fluxes are proportional to temperature gradients, with collisions between particles mediating energy flow from hotter to colder regions and the coefficient of thermal conduction given by Spitzer's theory. However, this theory breaks down in magnetized, turbulent, weakly collisional plasmas, although modifications are difficult to predict from first principles due to the complex, multiscale nature of the problem. Understanding heat transport is important in astrophysical plasmas such as those in galaxy clusters, where observed temperature profiles are explicable only in the presence of a strong suppression of heat conduction compared to Spitzer's theory.

Hospitalizations for cardiovascular diseases attributable to tobacco smoking in France in 2015.

Eur J Prev Cardiol

October 2021

Non-Communicable Diseases and Trauma Division, Santé Publique France, Saint Maurice, France.

Aims: Tobacco smoking is a major risk factor for many cardiovascular diseases. In France, the daily smoking prevalence is among the highest in high-income European countries. This study estimated the number of hospitalizations for cardiovascular diseases attributable to smoking in France in 2015, and the number of stays that could have been avoided if there had been 10% less current smokers or if the prevalence of current smokers had been 20%.

Article Synopsis
  • Acute pancreatitis (AP) can be an early indicator of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), but its effects on surgery outcomes and patient survival are not well understood.
  • A study involving 1449 PDAC patients who underwent surgery found that while 8.5% had AP as their initial symptom, this did not lead to higher rates of postoperative complications or mortality.
  • Ultimately, having AP prior to curative surgery did not affect the patients' recovery or survival rates compared to those without AP.

Reef ecosystems are under increasing pressure from global and local stressors. Rising seawater temperature and high ultraviolet radiation (UVR) levels are the main drivers of the disruption of the coral-dinoflagellate symbiosis (bleaching). Bleaching can also be exacerbated by nitrate contamination in coastal reefs.

Contributions of Age-Related and Audibility-Related Deficits to Aided Consonant Identification in Presbycusis: A Causal-Inference Analysis.

Front Aging Neurosci

March 2021

Laboratoire des Systèmes Perceptifs, UMR CNRS 8248, Département d'Études Cognitives, École normale supérieure, Université Paris Sciences & Lettres, Paris, France.

The decline of speech intelligibility in presbycusis can be regarded as resulting from the combined contribution of two main groups of factors: (1) audibility-related factors and (2) age-related factors. In particular, there is now an abundant scientific literature on the crucial role of suprathreshold auditory abilities and cognitive functions, which have been found to decline with age even in the absence of audiometric hearing loss. However, researchers investigating the direct effect of aging in presbycusis have to deal with the methodological issue that age and peripheral hearing loss covary to a large extent.
