Bottom-up growth offers precise control over the structure and geometry of semiconductor nanowires (NWs), enabling a wide range of possible shapes and seamless heterostructures for applications in nanophotonics and electronics. The most common vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) growth method features a complex interaction between the liquid metal catalyst droplet and the anisotropic structure of the crystalline NW, and the growth is mainly orchestrated by the triple-phase line (TPL). Despite the intrinsic mismatch between the droplet and the NW symmetries, its discussion has been largely avoided because of its complexity, which has led to the situation when multiple observed phenomena such as NW axial asymmetry or the oscillating truncation at the TPL still lack detailed explanation.

Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA) is a highly heterogeneous and aggressive liver cancer with limited therapeutic options. Precise classification and immunotherapy are perspectives to improve the treatments. We reported the role of septin 9 in apico-basal polarity and epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT).

Cyanobacteria were the first microorganisms that released oxygen into the atmosphere billions of years ago. To do it safely under intense sunlight, they developed strategies that prevent photooxidation in the photosynthetic membrane, by regulating the light-harvesting activity of their antenna complexes-the phycobilisomes-via the orange-carotenoid protein (OCP). This water-soluble protein interacts with the phycobilisomes and triggers nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ), a mechanism that safely dissipates overexcitation in the membrane.

Genotoxic stress, arising from various environmental sources and endogenous cellular processes, pose a constant threat to genomic stability. Cells have evolved intricate mechanisms to detect and repair DNA damage, orchestrating a robust genotoxic stress response to safeguard the integrity of the genome. Recent research has shed light on the crucial role of co- and post-transcriptional regulatory mechanisms in modulating the cellular response to genotoxic stress.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and respective shutdowns dramatically altered human activities, potentially changing human pressures on urban-dwelling animals. Here, we use such COVID-19-induced variation in human presence to evaluate, across multiple temporal scales, how urban birds from five countries changed their tolerance towards humans, measured as escape distance. We collected 6369 escape responses for 147 species and found that human numbers in parks at a given hour, day, week or year (before and during shutdowns) had a little effect on birds' escape distances.

We disclose the synthesis of 3-arylquinoxalin-2-ones from -phenylenediamines and readily available arylacetates. The method harnesses the selective oxidative property of elemental sulfur in the presence of amine base catalyst and DMSO. The reactions are operationally simple and tolerate a wide range of functional groups.

In recent years, the exploration of genome three-dimensional (3D) conformation has yielded profound insights into the regulation of gene expression and cellular functions in both animals and plants. While animals exhibit a characteristic genome topology defined by topologically associating domains (TADs), plants display similar features with a more diverse conformation across species. Employing advanced high-throughput sequencing and microscopy techniques, we investigated the landscape of 26 histone modifications and RNA polymerase II distribution in tomato ().

Background: pathogenic variants (PV) have been recently identified as the most frequent variants predisposing to Sonic Hedgehog (SHH) medulloblastomas (MB); however, guidelines are still lacking for genetic counseling in this new syndrome.
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed clinical and genetic data of a French series of 29 -mutated MB.
Results: All patients developed SHH-MB, with a biallelic inactivation of found in 24 tumors.

Background: Laparoscopic liver resection (LLR) has been associated with improved patient recovery as well as reduced postoperative adhesions compared to open LR (OLR) and could therefore facilitate redo liver surgery. LLR prior to liver transplantation (LT) is increasingly performed, LT being saved for HCC recurrence. LT is still performed by open surgery due to vascular reconstructions and underlying liver chronic disease.

The study of diffusion with preferential returns to places visited in the past has attracted increased attention in recent years. In these highly non-Markov processes, a standard diffusive particle intermittently resets at a given rate to previously visited positions. At each reset, a position to be revisited is randomly chosen with a probability proportional to the accumulated amount of time spent by the particle at that position.

The reaction of birds to the nest parasite, the European cuckoo Cuculus canorus, has been the subject of extensive testing in various aspects. However, while the cuckoo is a long-distance migrant, some of its hosts are sedentary species. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether species, primarily hosts, react to the presence of the cuckoo also in the winter season.

Frailty, a condition that was first defined 20 years ago, is now assessed via multiple different tools. The Frailty Phenotype was initially used to identify a population of "pre-frail" and "frail" older adults, so as to prevent falls, loss of mobility, and hospitalizations. A different definition of frailty, via the Clinical Frailty Scale, is now actively used in critical care situations to evaluate over 65 year-old patients, whether it be for Intensive Care Unit (ICU) admissions, limitation of life-sustaining treatments or prognostication.

The evolution of new variants of plant pathogens is one of the biggest challenges to controlling and managing plant diseases. Of the forces driving these evolutionary processes, global migration events are particularly important for widely distributed diseases such as potato late blight, caused by the oomycete . However, little is known about its migration routes outside North America and Europe.

Introduction: Lung cancer is the most common cancer worldwide in mortality and the second in incidence. Epidemiological studies found a higher lung cancer risk for smoking women in comparison to men, but these sex differences, irrespective of smoking habits, remain controversial. One of the hypotheses concerns the genetic contribution of the sex chromosomes.

Development of the cerebellum requires precise regulation of granule neuron progenitor (GNP) proliferation. Although it is known that primary cilia are necessary to support GNP proliferation, the exact molecular mechanism governing primary cilia dynamics within GNPs remains elusive. Here, we establish the pivotal roles for the centrosomal kinase TTBK2 (Tau tubulin kinase-2) and the E3 ubiquitin ligase HUWE1 in GNP proliferation.

Introduction: The Morel-Lavallee lesion (MLL) is a closed, degloving soft-tissue injury, wherein the skin and subcutaneous tissue are separated from the underlying fascia. This syndrome causes disruption of wound healing. Infrared thermography is a noninvasive and pain-free tool that can be used to evaluate scar and the influence of osteopathic manipulative treatment.
