Attachment of iron oxide nanoparticles to carbon nanofibers studied by in-situ liquid phase transmission electron microscopy.

By using liquid phase transmission electron microscopy (LP-TEM), the dynamics of iron oxide nanoparticle (Fe-NP) attachment to carbon nanofibers (CNFs) and oxygen functionalized CNFs (CNF-Ox) were studied in-situ. The beam effect on the stability of the sample in various liquids was examined, and it was found that toluene provided the highest stability and resolution to image both CNF supports and Fe-NPs. Flowing particles dispersed in toluene through the liquid cell allowed direct monitoring of the attachment process at ambient temperature.

Intradermal rabies post-exposure prophylaxis can be abridged with no measurable impact on clinical outcome in Cambodia, 2003-2014.

Rabies causes 60,000 deaths worldwide annually. Rabies post-exposure prophylaxis is highly effective but often geographically and financially beyond reach in endemic developing countries. We conducted a retrospective study on clinical outcome at ≥6 months in 3318 Cambodians who received intradermal Vero cell vaccine post-exposure prophylaxis after a bite by a rabid or sick-looking but untested dog in 2003-2014.

Immune/microbial interface perturbation in human IgA deficiency.

In a recently published article we report the metagenomic analysis of human gut microbiomes evolved in the absence of immunoglobulin A (IgA). We show that human IgA deficiency is not associated with massive quantitative perturbations of gut microbial ecology. While our study underlines a rather expected pathobiont expansion, we at the same time highlight a less expected depletion in some typically beneficial symbionts.

[Glucocorticoid sensitive bilateral leg swelling in an 85-year-old woman presenting with polymyalgia rheumatica: A case report].

Introduction: Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) can be associated with distal swelling indicating an associated RS3PE syndrome. We report a case of PMR associated with oedema of the lower limbs, which resolved rapidly under glucocorticoid therapy.

Case Report: A 85-year-old woman presented with a 4 month history of PMR responding to the 2012 EULAR/ACR classification criteria.

The steroid derivative 6-aminocholestanol inhibits the DEAD-box helicase eIF4A (LieIF4A) from the Trypanosomatid parasite Leishmania by perturbing the RNA and ATP binding sites.

The antifungal agent 6-aminocholestanol targets the production of ergosterol, which is the principle sterol in many fungi and protozoans; ergosterol serves many of the same roles as cholesterol in animals. We found that it also is an effective inhibitor of the translation-initiation factor eIF4AI from mouse (eIF4AI) and the Trypanosomatid parasite Leishmania (LieIF4A). The eIF4A proteins belong to the DEAD-box family of RNA helicases, which are ATP-dependent RNA-binding proteins and RNA-dependent ATPases.

Association of social deprivation with 1-year outcome of ICU survivors: results from the FROG-ICU study.

Purpose: Intensive care unit survivors suffer from prolonged impairment, reduced quality of life, and higher mortality rates after discharge compared to the general population. Socioeconomic status may play a partial but important role in mortality and recovery. Therefore, the detection of factors that are responsible for poor long-term outcomes would be beneficial in designing targeted interventions for at-risk populations.

Secular trends of hip fractures in France: impact of changing characteristics of the background population.

Introduction: Hip fractures are a societal burden because of their high morbidity and mortality and the cost they generate. With the aging of the population, worries grow about an increase of the incidence and incidence rate of hip fracture in the future. Controversial data have been provided in relation to the referencepopulation used.

Systemic Inflammation and Acute-on-Chronic Liver Failure: Too Much, Not Enough.

ACLF is a specific, but complex and multifactorial form of acute decompensation of cirrhosis and is characterized by an extraordinary dynamic natural course, rapidly evolving organ failure, and high short-term mortality. Dysbalanced immune function is central to its pathogenesis and outcome with an initial excessive systemic inflammatory response that drives organ failure and mortality. Later in its course, immuno-exhaustion/immunoparalysis prevails predisposing the patient to secondary infectious events and reescalation in end-organ dysfunction and mortality.

The sentinel lymph node of breast cancer and the radiation oncologist.

If the indications of sentinel lymph node biopsy and axillary lymph node dissection have been the subject of many trials, the indications of radiotherapy, in the absence of axillary lymph node dissection are a matter of debate. We reviewed the available literature on this topic and tried to draw some practical applications. In case of negative result of a sentinel lymph node biopsy, patients could be viewed as having pN0 disease and indications of adjuvant radiotherapy based on this paradigm.

Lymphatic Transport and Lymph Node Location of Microspheres Subcutaneously Injected in the Vicinity of Tumors in a Rabbit Model of Breast Cancer.

Purpose: To assess the lymphatic transport of microparticles of 100 nm, 1 μm and 10 μm subcutaneously injected into the breast area of healthy and tumor-bearing rabbits, and to analyze their location in lymph node (LN) in relation to malignant cells.

Methods: Female rabbits (n = 9) bearing a VX2 tumor in one thoracic mammary gland were subcutaneously injected at D15 with polystyrene fluorescent particles around the nipple, on the tumor and on the healthy sides. The tumor and the LN measured by ultrasound at D9, D15 and D20 were explanted at D20.

A comprehensive analysis of Lymphoma-associated haemophagocytic syndrome in a large French multicentre cohort detects some clues to improve prognosis.

Lymphoma-associated haemophagocytic syndrome (LAHS) accounts for most cases of secondary haemophagocytic syndrome (HS) and has been extensively described in Asian populations. However, little is known about the epidemiology of LAHS in Western countries. We herein report a case series of 71 LAHS patients in which the lymphomas were mainly of the aggressive type.

Value of schizophrenia treatment I: The patient journey.

Background: The aim of the European Brain Council project "The Value of Treatment" was to provide evidence-based, cost-effective policy recommendations for a patient-centered and sustainable coordinated care model for brain disorders. The first part of schizophrenia study examined the needs and gaps in the patients' care pathway.

Methods: Descriptive analysis was based on an inventory of needs and treatment opportunities, using focus group sessions, expert interviews, users' input, and literature review.

The foodborne pathogen Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) causes invasive infection in susceptible animals and humans. To survive and proliferate within hosts, this facultative intracellular pathogen tightly coordinates the expression of a complex regulatory network that controls the expression of virulence factors. Here, we identified and characterized MouR, a novel virulence regulator of Lm.

Impact of Combination Chemotherapy in Peritoneal Mesothelioma Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC): The RENAPE Study.

Background: The introduction of cytoreductive surgery (CRS) in combination with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) improved the prognosis of selected patients with peritoneal mesothelioma (PM).

Objective: The objective of our study was to evaluate whether different HIPEC agents were associated with different outcomes in patients with PM.

Methods: From the RENAPE database, we selected all patients with histology-proven PM who underwent CRS + HIPEC from 1989 to 2014.

A comparison of methods to assess cell mechanical properties.

The mechanical properties of cells influence their cellular and subcellular functions, including cell adhesion, migration, polarization, and differentiation, as well as organelle organization and trafficking inside the cytoplasm. Yet reported values of cell stiffness and viscosity vary substantially, which suggests differences in how the results of different methods are obtained or analyzed by different groups. To address this issue and illustrate the complementarity of certain approaches, here we present, analyze, and critically compare measurements obtained by means of some of the most widely used methods for cell mechanics: atomic force microscopy, magnetic twisting cytometry, particle-tracking microrheology, parallel-plate rheometry, cell monolayer rheology, and optical stretching.

Transverse single-file diffusion and enhanced longitudinal diffusion near a subcritical bifurcation.

A quasi-one-dimensional system of repelling particles undergoes a configurational phase transition when the transverse confining potential decreases. Below a threshold, it becomes energetically favorable for the system to adopt one of two staggered raw patterns, symmetric with respect to the system axis. This transition is a subcritical pitchfork bifurcation for short range interactions.

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma in people living with HIV in France.

Objectives: Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), mainly due to smoking, is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths. However, an increasing number of tumors - especially oropharyngeal cancer - are reported in non-smokers in association with the human papillomavirus (HPV). As HIV-infected individuals are particularly at risk of HPV-related disease, we aimed to describe the burden of HNSCC in this population.

Anti-CD160, Alone or in Combination With Bevacizumab, Is a Potent Inhibitor of Ocular Neovascularization in Rabbit and Monkey Models.

Purpose: To assess the efficacy of the murine first-in-class CL1-R2 monoclonal antibody (mAb) targeting human CD160 (alone or in combination with bevacizumab) by using the rabbit corneal neovascularization (CNV) model, and determine the safety and efficacy of ELB01101, a novel CL1-R2-derived humanized IgG4 mAb, in a monkey model of choroidal neovascularization (ChNV).

Methods: Comparison of effect of CL1-R2, bevacizumab, or aflibercept or IgG1 (control) injections in early and late treatment schemes on evolution of VEGF- or FGF2-induced rabbit CNV was performed. In the combination setting, bevacizumab was coinjected with different doses of CL1-R2.

LPS-Induced Inflammation Abolishes the Effect of DYRK1A on IkB Stability in the Brain of Mice.

Down syndrome is characterized by premature aging and dementia with neurological features that mimic those found in Alzheimer's disease. This pathology in Down syndrome could be related to inflammation, which plays a role in other neurodegenerative diseases. We previously found a link between the NFkB pathway, long considered a prototypical proinflammatory signaling pathway, and the dual-specificity tyrosine phosphorylation-regulated kinase 1A (DYRK1A).

Dynamic Proteoids Generated From Dipeptide-Based Monomers.

Dynamic proteoids are dynamic covalent analogues of proteins which are generated through the reversible polymerization of amino-acid- or peptide-derived monomers. The authors design and prepare a series of dynamic proteoids based on the reversible polycondensation of six types of dipeptide hydrazides bearing different categories of side chains. The polymerization and structures of biodynamers generated by H-NMR spectroscopy, light scattering and cryo-transmission-electron microscopy are studied.

Impact of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors or receptor blockers on post-ICU discharge outcome in patients with acute kidney injury.

Purpose: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is associated with the activation of the renin-angiotensin system. Whether angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEi) or angiotensin-receptor blockers (ARB) improve outcome in patients recovering from AKI remains unexplored. The purpose was to investigate the association between prescription of ACEi/ARB at intensive care unit (ICU) discharge and 1-year outcome in patients recovering from AKI.

Understanding the role of the perivascular space in cerebral small vessel disease.

Small vessel diseases (SVDs) are a group of disorders that result from pathological alteration of the small blood vessels in the brain, including the small arteries, capillaries and veins. Of the 35-36 million people that are estimated to suffer from dementia worldwide, up to 65% have an SVD component. Furthermore, SVD causes 20-25% of strokes, worsens outcome after stroke and is a leading cause of disability, cognitive impairment and poor mobility.

Microbial ecology perturbation in human IgA deficiency.

Paradoxically, loss of immunoglobulin A (IgA), one of the most abundant antibodies, does not irrevocably lead to severe infections in humans but rather is associated with relatively mild respiratory infections, atopy, and autoimmunity. IgA might therefore also play covert roles, not uniquely associated with control of pathogens. We show that human IgA deficiency is not associated with massive quantitative perturbations of gut microbial ecology.
