ACTION Study Group, INSERM UMRS1166, ICAN-Institute of Cardiometabolism and Nutrition, Sorbonne Université (P.G., M.L., T.R., Y.T., M.E.G., D.B., J.S., N.H., G.D., G.M.), Institut de Cardiologie, Hôpital Pitié-Salpêtrière (AP-HP), Paris, France.

Background: The real incidence of atrial arrhythmia (AA) after patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure and whether this complication can be prevented remain unknown. We assessed whether flecainide is effective to prevent AA during the first 3 months after PFO closure, and whether 6 months of treatment with flecainide is more effective than 3 months to prevent AA after PFO closure.

Methods: AFLOAT (Assessment of Flecainide to Lower the Patent Foramen Ovale Closure Risk of Atrial Fibrillation or Tachycardia Trial) is a prospective, multicentre, randomized, open-label, superiority trial with a blind evaluation of all the end points (PROBE [Prospective Randomized Open, Blinded End Point] design).

Diffusion enhancement and autoparametric resonance.

Phys Rev E

May 2024

Laboratoire "Matière et Systèmes Complexes" (MSC), UMR 7057 CNRS, Université Paris-Diderot (Paris 7), 75205 Paris Cedex 13, France.

The possibility of an autoparametric resonance in an isolated many-particle system induces a specific behavior of the particles in the presence of thermal noise. In particular, the variance associated with a resonant mode, and consequently that of the associated particles, is strongly increased compared to what it would have in the absence of parametric resonance. In this paper we consider a dimer submitted to a periodic potential for which there are only two modes, the center of mass motion and the internal vibration mode.

Motions of a dimer on a periodic potential.

Phys Rev E

December 2022

Laboratoire "Matière et Systèmes Complexes" (MSC), UMR 7057 CNRS, Université Paris-Diderot (Paris 7), 75205 Paris Cedex 13, France.

A dimer on a periodic potential is a simple system that exhibits a surprisingly rich dynamics. This system is conservative, but it is nonlinear and nonintegrable. In a previous work, we evidenced the autoparametric excitation of the relative motion by the center of mass in two limiting cases (very small or very large initial energy, compared to the external potential depth).

A universal predictive and mechanistic urinary peptide signature in acute kidney injury.

Crit Care

November 2022

Department of Nephrology and Organ Transplantation, University Hospital of Toulouse, and French Intensive Care Renal Network, 31000, Toulouse, France.

Background: The delayed diagnosis of acute kidney injury (AKI) episodes and the lack of specificity of current single AKI biomarkers hamper its management. Urinary peptidome analysis may help to identify early molecular changes in AKI and grasp its complexity to identify potential targetable molecular pathways.

Methods: In derivation and validation cohorts totalizing 1170 major cardiac bypass surgery patients and in an external cohort of 1569 intensive care unit (ICU) patients, a peptide-based score predictive of AKI (7-day KDIGO classification) was developed, validated, and compared to the reference biomarker urinary NGAL and NephroCheck and clinical scores.

Parametric resonance in a conservative system of coupled nonlinear oscillators.

Phys Rev E

May 2022

Laboratoire "Matière et Systèmes Complexes" (MSC), UMR 7057 CNRS, Université Paris-Diderot (Paris 7), 75205 Paris Cedex 13, France.

We study a dimer in a periodic potential well, which is a conservative but nonintegrable system. This seemingly simple system exhibits a surprisingly rich dynamics. Using a systematic asymptotic analysis, we demonstrate that the translation mode of the dimer (center of mass motion) may induce a parametric resonance of the oscillatory mode.

Remnants-preserving ACL reconstruction using direct tendinous graft fixation: a new rat model.

J Orthop Surg Res

January 2022

Unité de Chirurgie, École Nationale Vétérinaire d'Alfort, Université Paris-Est-Créteil, 7 avenue du Général de Gaulle, 94704, Maisons Alfort Cedex, France.

Background: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) repair techniques are new emerging strategies prevailing, in selected cases, over standard reconstruction of the ACL with excision of its remnants. Mid-substance ACL tears represent a challenge for ACL repair techniques, and remnants-preserving ACL reconstruction (rp-ACLR) using an autograft remains the recommended treatment in this situation. However, morbidity associated with the autograft harvesting prompts the need for alternative surgical strategies based on the use of synthetic scaffolds.

Mitochondrial Cristae Architecture and Functions: Lessons from Minimal Model Systems.

Membranes (Basel)

June 2021

Faculté des Sciences et Ingénierie, Sorbonne Université, UFR 925 Physique, 75005 Paris, France.

Mitochondria are known as the powerhouse of eukaryotic cells. Energy production occurs in specific dynamic membrane invaginations in the inner mitochondrial membrane called cristae. Although the integrity of these structures is recognized as a key point for proper mitochondrial function, less is known about the mechanisms at the origin of their plasticity and organization, and how they can influence mitochondria function.

Response to therapy criteria, known as RECIST (Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumours), are widely used to evaluate neuroendocrine tumours (NET) metastatic to the liver, under treatment. RECIST criteria does not take in account many various distinct features such as tumour growth, secretory capacity and anatomical localisation with wide variation in clinical and biological presentation of different NETs. Key features of RECIST includes definitions of the minimal size of measurable lesions, instructions on how many lesions to measure and follow, and the use of unidimensional, rather than bidimensional, measures for overall evaluation of tumour burden.

Hong-Ou-Mandel Interference with Imperfect Single Photon Sources.

Phys Rev Lett

February 2021

Centre for Nanosciences and Nanotechnology, CNRS, Université Paris-Saclay, UMR 9001, 10 Boulevard Thomas Gobert, 91120 Palaiseau, France.

Hong-Ou-Mandel interference is a cornerstone of optical quantum technologies. We explore both theoretically and experimentally how unwanted multiphoton components of single-photon sources affect the interference visibility, and find that the overlap between the single photons and the noise photons significantly impacts the interference. We apply our approach to quantum dot single-photon sources to access the mean wave packet overlap of the single-photon component.

Article Synopsis
  • Artificial light at night poses a significant threat to biodiversity, particularly for mobile species like bats, which may adapt their behavior to avoid lit areas due to perceived predation risks.
  • In this study, researchers used 3D acoustic localization to observe how bats adjust their flight paths in relation to the distance from streetlights emitting white and red light, finding that bats significantly increase their flight inside forests as they approach these lights.
  • The findings indicate that bats seek refuge in more densely vegetated areas when exposed to light, demonstrating their reliance on landscape features to navigate threats, while emphasizing that maintaining darkness is the best method to protect bat populations.
