In most experimental protocols, false starts are produced on dry bones obtained through a maceration process for anthropological analyses, for the sake of reproducibility. Although this allows for controlled experimental conditions, the absence of soft parts when experimentally creating false starts does not correspond to the real conditions of criminal dismemberment. The main objective of this study was to determine if the results of experimental work on the characteristics of false starts were valid under medico-legal conditions.

The association between antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis and hematologic malignancy has been previously described and remains a rare phenomenon (although potentially underdiagnosed). We report the case of an 81-year-old patient with myelodysplastic syndrome who was managed for an infectious-appearing pneumonia, which subsequently complicated into complete heart block and severe acute respiratory distress syndrome with a fatal outcome. The final diagnosis is severe hemorrhagic alveolitis due to ANCA-associated vasculitis meeting the criteria for microscopic polyangiitis.

We consider a population distributed between two habitats, in each of which it experiences a growth rate that switches periodically between two values, 1-ɛ>0 or -(1+ɛ)<0. We study the specific case where the growth rate is positive in one habitat and negative in the other one for the first half of the period, and conversely for the second half of the period, that we refer as the (±1) model. The combined effects of compressive stress, applied pressure, and edge folding of a freestanding thin film have been theoretically investigated on the buckle morphologies of the structure. In the framework of the Föppl-von Kármán theory of thin plates, the different buckle profiles have been analytically determined, and two buckling regimes have been identified for the film: one regime where the transition from upward to downward buckling is continuous, and one that is discontinuous (snap-through). The critical pressures characterizing the different regimes have then been determined, and an hysteresis cycle has been identified through the study of buckling versus pressure.

The Iron Age period occupies an important place in French history because the Gauls are regularly presented as the direct ancestors of the extant French population. We documented here the genomic diversity of Iron Age communities originating from six French regions. The 49 acquired genomes permitted us to highlight an absence of discontinuity between Bronze Age and Iron Age groups in France, lending support to a cultural transition linked to progressive local economic changes rather than to a massive influx of allochthone groups.

Toxin-antitoxin (TA) gene pairs are ubiquitous in microbial chromosomal genomes and plasmids as well as temperate bacteriophages. They act as regulatory switches, with the toxin limiting the growth of bacteria and archaea by compromising diverse essential cellular targets and the antitoxin counteracting the toxic effect. To uncover previously uncharted TA diversity across microbes and bacteriophages, we analyzed the conservation of genomic neighborhoods using our computational tool FlaGs (for flanking genes), which allows high-throughput detection of TA-like operons.

Background: Selective inhibitory effects of rhenium(I)-diselenoether (Re-diSe) were observed in cultured breast malignant cells. They were attributed to a decrease in Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) production. A concomitant decrease in the production of Transforming Growth Factor-beta (TGFβ1), Insulin Growth Factor 1 (IGF1), and Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor A (VEGFA) by the malignant cells was also observed.
