Laboratoire de Cytologie Clinique et Cytogénétique, LBMR néoplasies myéloprolifératives, CHU CAREMEAU, Nîmes, France.

Hereditary congenital erythrocytosis results from constitutive activation of the hypoxia pathway. This pathway is controlled by regulation of the α isoforms of the hypoxia-inducible factor α/β heterodimer, notably via hydroxylation by prolyl hydroxylase domain 2 (PHD2). Mutations affecting PHD2 are involved in Type 3 erythrocytosis.

X*Y females exhibit steeper reproductive senescence in the African pygmy mouse.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

January 2025

Institut des Sciences de l'Evolution de Montpellier, UMR 5554 (CNRS, Université Montpellier, Institut de recherche pour le développement), Montpellier 34090, France.

A wave of studies has recently emphasized the influence of sex chromosomes on both lifespan and actuarial senescence patterns across vertebrates and invertebrates. Basically, the heterogametic sex (XY males in XX/XY systems or ZW females in ZW/ZZ systems) typically displays a lower lifespan and a steeper rate of actuarial senescence than the homogametic sex. However, whether these effects extend to the senescence patterns of other phenotypic traits or physiological functions is yet to be determined.

The endoplasmic reticulum as a cradle for virus and extracellular vesicle secretion.

Trends Cell Biol

December 2024

Institut de Recherche en Infectiologie de Montpellier (IRIM), CNRS UMR9004, Université Montpellier, Montpellier, France. Electronic address:

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are small membranous carriers of protein, lipid, and nucleic acid cargoes and play a key role in intercellular communication. Recent work has revealed the previously under-recognized participation of endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-associated proteins (ERAPs) during EV secretion, using pathways reminiscent of viral replication and secretion. Here, we present highlights of the literature involving ER/ERAPs in EV biogenesis and propose mechanistic parallels with ERAPs exploited during viral infections.

Chronic elevated blood pressure impinges on the functioning of multiple organs and therefore harms body homeostasis. Elucidating the protective mechanisms whereby the organism copes with sustained or repetitive blood pressure rises is therefore a topical challenge. Here we address this issue in the adrenal medulla, the master neuroendocrine tissue involved in the secretion of catecholamines, influential hormones in blood pressure regulation.

Phenomic prediction (PP), a novel approach utilizing Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) data, offers an alternative to genomic prediction (GP) for breeding applications. In PP, a hyperspectral relationship matrix replaces the genomic relationship matrix, potentially capturing both additive and non-additive genetic effects. While PP boasts advantages in cost and throughput compared to GP, the factors influencing its accuracy remain unclear and need to be defined.

Owing to their rapid cooling rate and hence loss-limited propagation distance, cosmic-ray electrons and positrons (CRe) at very high energies probe local cosmic-ray accelerators and provide constraints on exotic production mechanisms such as annihilation of dark matter particles. We present a high-statistics measurement of the spectrum of CRe candidate events from 0.3 to 40 TeV with the High Energy Stereoscopic System, covering 2 orders of magnitude in energy and reaching a proton rejection power of better than 10^{4}.

Despite the well-known effects of sexual selection on phenotypes, links between this evolutionary process and reproductive isolation, genomic divergence, and speciation have been difficult to establish. We unravel the genetic basis of sexually selected plumage traits to investigate their effects on reproductive isolation in barn swallows. The genetic architecture of sexual traits is characterized by 12 loci on two autosomes and the Z chromosome.

Endurance-trained athletes require physiological explorations that have evolved throughout the history of exercise physiology with technological advances. From the use of the Douglas bag to measure gas exchange to the development of wearable connected devices, advances in physiological explorations have enabled us to move from the classic but still widely used cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) to the collection of data under real conditions on outdoor endurance or ultra-endurance events. However, such explorations are often costly, time-consuming, and complex, creating a need for efficient analysis methods.

Institut National de la Recherche pour l'Agriculture, l'Alimentation et l'Environnement, UR406 Abeilles et Environnement, 84914, Avignon, France. Electronic address:

The current risk assessment framework for insecticides suffers from certain shortcomings in adequately addressing the effects of low doses on off-target species. To remedy this gap, a combination of behavioural assays and in vitro cellular approaches are required to refine the precision of toxicity assessment. The domestic honey bee has long been standing as an emblematic pollinator in ecotoxicology, and once more, it provides us with a practical testing model for this purpose.

The HUSH epigenetic repressor complex silences PML nuclear body-associated HSV-1 quiescent genomes.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

December 2024

Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1, Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS) UMR 5261, Institut national de la santé et de la recherche médicale (Inserm) U1315, Laboratoire d'Excellence (LabEx) DEV2CAN, Institut NeuroMyoGène-Pathophysiology and Genetics of Neuron and Muscle (INMG-PGNM), team "Chromatin dynamics, Nuclear Domains, Virus", Lyon 69008, France.

Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) latently infected neurons display diverse patterns in the distribution of the viral genomes within the nucleus. A key pattern involves quiescent HSV-1 genomes sequestered in promyelocytic leukemia nuclear bodies (PML NBs) forming viral DNA-containing PML-NBs (vDCP NBs). Using a cellular model that replicates vDCP NB formation, we previously demonstrated that these viral genomes are chromatinized with the H3.

Analysis of a shark reveals ancient, Wnt-dependent, habenular asymmetries in vertebrates.

Nat Commun

November 2024

CNRS, Sorbonne Université, UMR7232-Biologie Intégrative des Organismes Marins, Observatoire Océanologique, Banyuls-sur-Mer, France.

The mode of evolution of left-right asymmetries in the vertebrate habenulae remains largely unknown. Using a transcriptomic approach, we show that in a cartilaginous fish, the catshark Scyliorhinus canicula, habenulae exhibit marked asymmetries, in both their medial and lateral components. Comparisons across vertebrates suggest that those identified in lateral habenulae reflect an ancestral gnathostome trait, partially conserved in lampreys, and independently lost in tetrapods and neopterygians.
