October 2015

Université Claude Bernard Lyon I, Institut des Sciences Analytiques, Université de Lyon, UMR CNRS 5280, 5, rue de la DOUA, 69100 Villeurbanne, France.

Different synthesis routes have been implemented to prepare macroporous monoliths with vinyl pendant groups and micrometric skeletons and through-pore sizes. A standard process combining the synthesis of a widely used (methyltrimethoxysilane/tetramethoxysilane) (MTMS/TMOS) hybrid silica monolith and the postsilanization with vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS) was used as reference material (Vgr-MTMS). An alternative "one-pot" procedure was used to obtain vinylized hybrid monoliths.

Reduction of long-term mortality risk, an important clinical outcome for people in alcohol dependence treatment, can rarely be established in randomized controlled trials (RCTs). We calculated the reduction in all-cause mortality risk using data from short-term (6 and 12 months) double-blind RCTs comparing as-needed nalmefene treatment to placebo, and mortality risks from meta-analyses on all-cause-mortality risk by reduction of drinking in people with alcohol dependence. A reduction in drinking in the RCTs was defined by shifts in drinking risk levels established by the European Medicines Agency.

Unlabelled: Intravitreal injections (IVT) of aflibercept are indicated in France for the treatment of neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD). An induction phase consisting of 3 monthly IVTs followed by follow-up visits and IVTs every other month during the first year is recommended. However, it may be necessary to adjust this schedule for some patients who might benefit from a more tailored approach, namely a follow-up visit immediately after the induction phase.

In recent years, evidence has emerged for a bidirectional relationship between sleep and neurological and psychiatric disorders. First, sleep-wake disorders (SWDs) are very common and may be the first/main manifestation of underlying neurological and psychiatric disorders. Secondly, SWDs may represent an independent risk factor for neuropsychiatric morbidities.

The aim of the study was to investigate depression treatment use, either psychotherapy (PT) or antidepressant drugs (ADT) in the older and younger depressed population. Cohorts of 6316 elderly (≥65 year-old) and 25,264 matched non-elderly (25-64 year-old) depressed patients were created from a large national claims database of managed care plans from 2003 to 2006. Factors associated with ADT or PT were assessed using multivariate logistic models.

Introduction: Transforming growth factor (TGF)-β and interleukin (IL)-13 play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of systemic sclerosis (SSc), partly through activation of collagen production that leads to fibrosis. The aim of the present study was to determine whether TFG-β alters IL-13 production in T lymphocytes from patients with SSc from that seen in those of healthy donors.

Methods: IL-13 mRNA and protein synthesis under TFG-β exposure was measured in circulating T lymphocytes from healthy donors and patients with SSc and also in the Jurkat Th2 T-cell line, using quantitative real-time PCR and fluorescence-activated cell sorting analysis, respectively.

Article Synopsis
  • This study is the first genome-wide association study (GWAS) focused on survival in multiple myeloma (MM), analyzing data from 545 patients across two major clinics.
  • A specific SNP near the FOPNL gene on chromosome 16p13 was found to have a strong link to patient survival, indicating those with the minor allele face a higher risk of mortality.
  • Further analysis confirmed this association in additional patient cohorts and revealed that the minor allele corresponds to increased FOPNL expression, which correlates with shorter survival outcomes.

Sepsis-induced immune alterations monitoring by flow cytometry as a promising tool for individualized therapy.

Cellular Immunology Laboratory, Hospices Civils De Lyon, Hôpital E Herriot, Lyon, France.

Septic syndromes remain a major although largely under-recognized health care problem and represent the first cause of mortality in intensive care units. While sepsis has, for long, been solely described as inducing a tremendous systemic inflammatory response, novel findings indicate that sepsis indeed initiates a more complex immunologic response that varies over time, with the concomitant occurrence of both pro- and anti-inflammatory mechanisms. As a resultant, after a short proinflammatory phase, septic patients enter a stage of protracted immunosuppression.

YsxC is an essential P-loop GTPase that interacts with the 50S subunit of the ribosome. The putative implication in ribosome binding of two basic clusters of YsxC, a conserved positively charged patch including R31, R116, H117 and K146 lying adjacent to the nucleotide-binding site, and the C-terminal alpha helix, was investigated. C-terminal truncation variants of YsxC were unable to bind to both ribosome and rRNAs, whereas mutations in the other cluster did not affect YsxC binding.

Transversal stability of the bouncing ball on a concave surface.

Université de Lyon, Laboratoire de Physique, Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon, CNRS, 46 Allée d'Italie, 69364 Lyon cedex 07, France.

A ball bouncing repeatedly on a vertically vibrating surface constitutes the famous "bouncing ball" problem, a nonlinear system used in the 1980s, and still in use nowadays, to illustrate the route to chaos by period doubling. In experiments, in order to avoid the ball escape that would be inevitable with a flat surface, a concave lens is often used to limit the horizontal motion. However, we observe experimentally that the system is not stable.

September 2015

Faculty of Sciences, Bioactive Molecules Research Group, Doctoral School of Sciences and Technologies, Lebanese University, Lebanon.

Cyclodextrins (CDs) are cyclic oligosaccharides, consisting of glucopyranose units, which are able to form host-guest inclusion complexes with lipophilic molecules. The ability of CD to increase drug solubility may be used to increase drug entrapment in the aqueous compartment of liposomes and liposomes can protect CD/drug inclusion complexes until drug release. Liposomes are phospholipid vesicles composed of lipid bilayers enclosing one or more aqueous compartments.

The proposal that sensory processing is achieved in segregated anatomical pathways has been profoundly revisited following the description of cross-modal anatomical connections both at higher and at lower processing levels. However, an understanding of the cortical extent of these long range cross-modal functional influences has been missing. Here, we use functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to map, in the non-human primate brain, the cortical regions which are activated by both visual and tactile stimulations.
