Two bacteriophages (phages) of were isolated from sewage water collected from Dakar, Senegal. Phage vKpIN17 belongs to the genus within the family, with double-stranded DNA genomes, whereas vKpIN18 belongs to the genus of the family.

Biomass carbon-based materials are highly promising for supercapacitor (SC) electrodes due to their availability, environment-friendliness, and low cost. Herein, an easy energy-saving hydrothermal process was used to produce NiCoO/NiOOH (NiCoO) composites with biomass carbon (BC) derived from the bark of (AO) at different synthesis time durations (2 h, 4 h, 8 h, 16 h). The structural and morphological properties of the samples were analysed using XRD, Raman spectroscopy, XPS, SEM, TEM and BET, and the results exhibit the presence of carbon inserted into the nickel-cobalt hydroxide matrix.

MOOC-based blended learning for knowledge translation capacity-building: A qualitative evaluative study.

This qualitative study investigated the effectiveness of blended learning using MOOCs (massive open online courses) for capacity-building in knowledge translation (KT). The evaluation followed Kirkpatrick's updated model. A total of 23 semi-directed interviews were conducted with participants working at a research centre in Côte d'Ivoire, with a first wave of interviews immediately post-training and a second wave after five months.

Background: If any benefit is to be derived from the use of the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) questionnaires in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients, they should be validated and culturally adapted to the target population. We aimed to critically appraise the psychometric properties of HRQoL questionnaires used in African populations with CKD.

Methods: Using a quantitative, participatory, insider research study, led by female anesthesiologists as the national coordinators in SSA, we collected data from academic or national health authorities and agencies.

Metabolomics is a powerful data-driven tool for in-depth biological phenotyping that could help identify the specific metabolic profile of cryptogenic strokes, for which no precise cause has been identified. We performed a targeted quantitative metabolomics study in West African patients who had recently suffered an ischemic stroke, which was either cryptogenic ( = 40) or had a clearly identified cause ( = 39), compared to a healthy control group ( = 40). Despite the economic significance of yams in developing countries, there is a paucity of microsatellite markers, and as of now, no comprehensive microsatellite marker database exists. In this study, we conducted genome-wide microsatellite marker development across four yam species, identified cross-species transferable markers, and designed an easy-to-use web portal for the yam researchers.

Examining the role of the diaspora in addressing the interconnections between human health and environmental change: The case of northern Senegalese communities.

Diaspora communities are a growing source of external assistance and resources to meet unmet needs and to strengthen existing health systems in their home countries. Although a growing number of articles have been published in this realm, very few have looked at diaspora communities' role and the place translocal communities give to health (care) in the various remittance dynamics, whilst including power relationships and environmental change. This article examines the motivations and practices through which Senegalese diasporas engage with the health system in their origin country and what barriers they face in their interventions.

[Perceptions and use of Universal Health Coverage (Plan Sésame) among the elderly in Dakar (Senegal), impacts on health expenditure related to diabetes and hypertension].

Introduction/rationale: In 2006, the Senegalese government set up a health coverage programme for people aged 60 and over - the Plan Sésame - to provide free medical care in all the country's public health facilities. This scheme has been integrated into the Universal Health Coverage (CMU) promoted from 2013. The objective of the study was to describe and analyse the knowledge and representations of professionals and users about health coverage and the Plan Sésame, the use of the scheme by the elderly, to evaluate the amount of medical expenses incurred during a routine medical consultation for the monitoring of their illness (hypertension and diabetes), and to calculate the out-of-pocket expenses related to the consultation.

Assessing equity and efficiency of health financing towards universal health coverage between regions in Tanzania.

Equity and efficiency in health financing are intermediate universal health coverage (UHC) objectives. While there is growing attention to monitoring these goals at the national level, subnational assessment is also needed to uncover potential divergences across subnational units. We assessed whether health funds were allocated or contributed equitably and spent efficiently across 26 regions in Tanzania in 2017/18 for four sources of funding.

External influences over Senegalese health financing policy: delaying universal health coverage?

Senegal has long sought solutions to achieve universal health coverage (UHC). However, in a context dependent on international aid, the country faces multiple external pressures to choose policy instruments. In this commentary, we propose an analysis of this influence.

Schistosomiasis control in Senegal: results from community data analysis for optimizing preventive chemotherapy intervention with praziquantel.

Background: Over the past two decades, preventive chemotherapy (PC) with praziquantel (PZQ) is the major strategy for controlling schistosomiasis in Senegal. The objective of this analysis was to update the endemicity of schistosomiasis at community level for better targeting mass treatment with PZQ in Senegal.

Methods: Demographic and epidemiological data from 1610 community health areas were analyzed using the schistosomiasis community data analysis tool of Expanded Special Project for Elimination of Neglected Tropical Diseases which developed by World Health Organization/Africa Office (WHO/AFRO).

Objectives: Several factors can cause acute flaccid paralysis cases including non-polio enteroviruses. In Senegal, few studies on non-polio enteroviruses (NPEV) have been performed.

Methods: Our study assess the molecular epidemiology of non-polio enteroviruses in Senegal from 2013 to 2021 through the previously existing programs for surveillance of polioviruses.

Feasibility and safety of integrating mass drug administration for helminth control with seasonal malaria chemoprevention among Senegalese children: a randomized controlled, observer-blind trial.

Background: The overlap in the epidemiology of malaria and helminths has been identified as a potential area to exploit for the development of an integrated control strategy that may help to achieve elimination of malaria and helminths. A randomized, controlled, observer-blind trial was conducted to assess the feasibility and safety of combining mass drug administration (MDA) for schistosomiasis and soil transmitted helminths (STH) with seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC) among children living in Senegal.

Methods: Female and male children aged 1-14 years were randomized 1:1:1, to receive Vitamin A and Zinc on Day 0, followed by SMC drugs (sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine and amodiaquine) on Days 1-3 (control group); or praziquantel and Vitamin A on Day 0, followed by SMC drugs on Days 1-3 (treatment group 1); or albendazole and praziquantel on Day 0, followed by SMC drugs on Days 1-3 (treatment group 2).
