Biomass carbon-based materials are highly promising for supercapacitor (SC) electrodes due to their availability, environment-friendliness, and low cost. Herein, an easy energy-saving hydrothermal process was used to produce NiCoO/NiOOH (NiCoO) composites with biomass carbon (BC) derived from the bark of (AO) at different synthesis time durations (2 h, 4 h, 8 h, 16 h). The structural and morphological properties of the samples were analysed using XRD, Raman spectroscopy, XPS, SEM, TEM and BET, and the results exhibit the presence of carbon inserted into the nickel-cobalt hydroxide matrix.

This qualitative study investigated the effectiveness of blended learning using MOOCs (massive open online courses) for capacity-building in knowledge translation (KT). The evaluation followed Kirkpatrick's updated model. A total of 23 semi-directed interviews were conducted with participants working at a research centre in Côte d'Ivoire, with a first wave of interviews immediately post-training and a second wave after five months.

Background: If any benefit is to be derived from the use of the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) questionnaires in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients, they should be validated and culturally adapted to the target population. We aimed to critically appraise the psychometric properties of HRQoL questionnaires used in African populations with CKD.
Methods: Web of Science, Embase, PubMed and PsycINFO databases were searched.

Background: Gender imbalance and poor representation of women complicate the anesthesiology workforce crisis in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). This study was performed to obtain a better understanding of gender disparity among medical graduates and anesthesiologists in SSA.
Methods: Using a quantitative, participatory, insider research study, led by female anesthesiologists as the national coordinators in SSA, we collected data from academic or national health authorities and agencies.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), recent decades have seen a major increase in the number of elderly people in Africa. Persistent infectious diseases are responsible for high morbidity and mortality in this immuno-senescent population, making vaccination an effective preventive measure. In developed countries, vaccination programs are in place and regularly updated.

Metabolomics is a powerful data-driven tool for in-depth biological phenotyping that could help identify the specific metabolic profile of cryptogenic strokes, for which no precise cause has been identified. We performed a targeted quantitative metabolomics study in West African patients who had recently suffered an ischemic stroke, which was either cryptogenic ( = 40) or had a clearly identified cause ( = 39), compared to a healthy control group ( = 40). Four hundred fifty-six metabolites were accurately measured.

Microsatellite markers are widely used in population genetics and breeding. Despite the economic significance of yams in developing countries, there is a paucity of microsatellite markers, and as of now, no comprehensive microsatellite marker database exists. In this study, we conducted genome-wide microsatellite marker development across four yam species, identified cross-species transferable markers, and designed an easy-to-use web portal for the yam researchers.

Diaspora communities are a growing source of external assistance and resources to meet unmet needs and to strengthen existing health systems in their home countries. Although a growing number of articles have been published in this realm, very few have looked at diaspora communities' role and the place translocal communities give to health (care) in the various remittance dynamics, whilst including power relationships and environmental change. This article examines the motivations and practices through which Senegalese diasporas engage with the health system in their origin country and what barriers they face in their interventions.

Introduction/rationale: In 2006, the Senegalese government set up a health coverage programme for people aged 60 and over - the Plan Sésame - to provide free medical care in all the country's public health facilities. This scheme has been integrated into the Universal Health Coverage (CMU) promoted from 2013. The objective of the study was to describe and analyse the knowledge and representations of professionals and users about health coverage and the Plan Sésame, the use of the scheme by the elderly, to evaluate the amount of medical expenses incurred during a routine medical consultation for the monitoring of their illness (hypertension and diabetes), and to calculate the out-of-pocket expenses related to the consultation.

Equity and efficiency in health financing are intermediate universal health coverage (UHC) objectives. While there is growing attention to monitoring these goals at the national level, subnational assessment is also needed to uncover potential divergences across subnational units. We assessed whether health funds were allocated or contributed equitably and spent efficiently across 26 regions in Tanzania in 2017/18 for four sources of funding.

Senegal has long sought solutions to achieve universal health coverage (UHC). However, in a context dependent on international aid, the country faces multiple external pressures to choose policy instruments. In this commentary, we propose an analysis of this influence.

Background: Over the past two decades, preventive chemotherapy (PC) with praziquantel (PZQ) is the major strategy for controlling schistosomiasis in Senegal. The objective of this analysis was to update the endemicity of schistosomiasis at community level for better targeting mass treatment with PZQ in Senegal.
Methods: Demographic and epidemiological data from 1610 community health areas were analyzed using the schistosomiasis community data analysis tool of Expanded Special Project for Elimination of Neglected Tropical Diseases which developed by World Health Organization/Africa Office (WHO/AFRO).

The adjuvant and/or vector significantly affect a vaccine's efficacy. Although traditional adjuvants such as alum have contributed to vaccine development, deficiencies in the induction of cellular and mucosal immunity have limited their further promotion. Salmonella vectors have unique advantages for establishing cellular and mucosal immunity due to mucosal pathways of invasion and intracellular parasitism.

Objectives: Several factors can cause acute flaccid paralysis cases including non-polio enteroviruses. In Senegal, few studies on non-polio enteroviruses (NPEV) have been performed.
Methods: Our study assess the molecular epidemiology of non-polio enteroviruses in Senegal from 2013 to 2021 through the previously existing programs for surveillance of polioviruses.
Background: The overlap in the epidemiology of malaria and helminths has been identified as a potential area to exploit for the development of an integrated control strategy that may help to achieve elimination of malaria and helminths. A randomized, controlled, observer-blind trial was conducted to assess the feasibility and safety of combining mass drug administration (MDA) for schistosomiasis and soil transmitted helminths (STH) with seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC) among children living in Senegal.
Methods: Female and male children aged 1-14 years were randomized 1:1:1, to receive Vitamin A and Zinc on Day 0, followed by SMC drugs (sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine and amodiaquine) on Days 1-3 (control group); or praziquantel and Vitamin A on Day 0, followed by SMC drugs on Days 1-3 (treatment group 1); or albendazole and praziquantel on Day 0, followed by SMC drugs on Days 1-3 (treatment group 2).

Purpose: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the fourth most common cancer in Africa, has a dismal overall survival of only 3 months like in sub-Saharan Africa. This is affected by the low gross domestic product and human development index, absence of coherent guidelines, and other factors.
Methods: An open forum for HCC-experienced health care workers from Africa and the rest of the world was held in October 2021.

The title salt, CHN·CHAsNO ·HO or [(CHCH)NH][HNCHAs(OH)O]·HO, (), was synthesized by mixing an aqueous solution of (4-amino-phenyl)-arsonic acid with an ethano-lic solution of di-benzyl-amine at room temperature. Compound crystallizes in the monoclinic 2/c space group. The three components forming are linked N-H⋯O and O-H⋯O inter-molecular hydrogen bonds, resulting in the propagation of an infinite zigzag chain.

The Gobra zebu genetic breeding program has resulted in the genetic improvement of a new population. This population gained genetic characteristics that set them apart from the other cattle populations reared in Senegal. The cause of these differences might be the reproductive isolation and selection to which this population of the "Centre de Recherches Zootechniques" of Dahra has been subjected since the 1950s.
