During a first-in-humans clinical trial investigating electron paramagnetic resonance tumor oximetry, a patient injected with the particulate oxygen sensor Printex ink was found to have unexpected fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake in a dermal nodule via positron emission tomography (PET). This nodule co-localized with the Printex ink injection; biopsy of the area, due to concern for malignancy, revealed findings consistent with ink and an associated inflammatory reaction. Investigations were subsequently performed to assess the impact of oxygen sensors on FDG-PET/CT imaging.

Occurrence of ventricular assist device (VAD)-specific infections is a serious complication that can jeopardize on the long run the effectiveness of VAD therapy. In the light of ongoing shortage of organ available for heart transplantation there will be in the next future an increase necessity of conservative strategies. A multidisciplinary approach including cardiac surgeons, cardiologist, infectious disease (ID) consultant and nuclear medicine physicians should be the first step for the diagnosis and treatment of VAD-specific infections.

Objectives: Although perioperative myocardial ischaemia (PMI) is a well-known complication following coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), standard strategies for its diagnosis and treatment are so far not defined. In this study, we sought to evaluate the impact on survival of postoperative coronary angiogram for management of patients with PMI after CABG.
Methods: Overall, 4028 patients underwent isolated CABG in a single-centre institution between January 2006 and September 2013.

Aim: Presence and consequent extent of infection in patients on continuous-flow left ventricular assist devices (CF-LVADs) can be challenging with the current diagnostic tools. The present study sought to demonstrate the diagnostic power of 18F-Fluorodeoxyglucose-Positron-Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) in detecting infection in patients supported with CF-LVAD.
Background: The present study sought to demonstrate the diagnostic power of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose-positron-emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) in detecting infection in patients supported with CF-LVAD.

Bioluminescence is produced by a broad range of organisms for defense, predation or communication purposes. Southern elephant seal (SES) vision is adapted to low-intensity light with a peak sensitivity, matching the wavelength emitted by myctophid species, one of the main preys of female SES. A total of 11 satellite-tracked female SESs were equipped with a time-depth-light 3D accelerometer (TDR10-X) to assess whether bioluminescence could be used by SESs to locate their prey.

Background: The current study sought to demonstrate the advantages offered by fluorine 18-fluorodeoxyglucose ((18)F-FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) in patients supported with continuous-flow left ventricular assist devices (CF-LVADs) in detecting infection and the consequent effect on clinical decisions.
Methods: Between April 2009 and September 2013, 40 PET examinations were performed in 31 patients (78.1% men; mean age, 51.

We present a clinical case of a psychotic drug abuser. The diagnostic hypothesis was paranoid schizophrenia. This case clearly demonstrates the diagnostic duel between schizophrenia and heroine addiction.

The authors present their experience with freeze-dried bone of human origin. Since 1983, 500 preserved allografts have been implanted in 228 patients. The implants were monitored radiographically and, based on perfect fusion with the recipient bone, the results were as follows: excellent: 78%; good: 8.
