Background: Clinical practice guidelines recommend the Lateralization Index (LI) as the standard for determining surgical eligibility in primary aldosteronism (PA). Our goal was to identify the optimal LI cut-offs in adrenal venous sampling (AVS) for diagnosing PA that is amenable to surgical cure.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective international cohort study across 16 institutions in 11 countries, including 1,550 patients with PA who underwent AVS, with and/or without ACTH stimulation.

Background: The diagnosis of third window syndromes often poses a challenge in clinical practice.
Objective: This paper provides an up-to-date overview of diagnostic procedures in third window syndromes, with special emphasis on superior canal dehiscence syndrome (SCDS), large vestibular aqueduct syndrome (LVAS), and X-chromosomal malformation of the cochlea.
Materials And Methods: A literature search was performed in PubMed up to December 2023.

Surgical robotic systems specifically developed for microsurgery are increasingly being used in recent years, particularly in reconstructive lymphatic surgery. Currently, there are two robotic systems that are used in microsurgery. Both systems feature tremor reduction and motion scaling technologies, which are intended to optimise the surgeon's precision and dexterity.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) represent a significant health problem worldwide and in Switzerland. Despite preventive measures and advances in treatment, cardiovascular diseases still lead to a significant number of hospitalizations in Switzerland (133 000 in 2021) and are for responsible for almost 1/3 of all deaths (19 600 in 2021). Emergency care for acute cardiovascular events now has a very high standard in Switzerland compared to other countries.

Background: To report ophthalmological outcomes and treatment regimen in patients with Susac syndrome.
Methods: This is a retrospective analysis of patients with Susac syndrome treated between November 2015 and March 2023. Multimodal imaging findings, ophthalmic examination data, information on neurological and sensorineural involvement, and therapeutic regimen were reviewed.

Purpose: To evaluate the increase in retinal thickness as a marker in predicting the onset of central retinal artery occlusions.
Methods: Retrospective clinical study conducted at one Swiss hospital. Electronic records were filtered for patients with artery occlusions.

Purpose: To introduce a novel technique of the aseptic manufacture of autologous serum eye drops (ASEDs) with a prefiltered closed system and to analyze the sterility of the produced ophtioles between 2018 and 2022.
Methods: This is a prospective single-center study conducted at the Department of Ophthalmology at a Swiss University Hospital between 2018 and 2022. For regulatory reasons, closed systems for manufacturing ASEDs are strongly recommended.
Nanotechnology has the potential to provide formulations of antitumor agents with increased selectivity towards cancer tissue thereby decreasing systemic toxicity. This study evaluated the potential of novel nanoformulation based on poly(lactic--glycolic acid) (PLGA) to reduce the cardiotoxic potential of doxorubicin (DOX). toxicity of PLGADOX was compared with clinically approved non-PEGylated, liposomal nanoformulation of DOX (LipoDOX) and conventional DOX form (ConvDOX).

Background: Anaesthesiology training programs in Europe vary in duration, content, and requirements for completion. This survey-based study conducted by the Trainees Committee of the European Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care explores current anaesthesia training designs across Europe.
Methods: Between May and July 2018, we sent a 41-item online questionnaire to all National Trainee Representatives, members of the National Anaesthesiologists Societies Committee, and Council Representatives of the European Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care (ESAIC) of all member countries.

Introduction: During intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring in neurosurgery, brain electrodes are placed to record electrocorticography or to inject current for direct cortical stimulation. A low impedance electrode may improve signal quality.
Areas Covered: We review here a brain electrode (WISE Cortical Strip, WCS®), where a thin polymer strip embeds platinum nanoparticles to create conductive electrode contacts.

Interictal Epileptiform Discharges (IED) and High Frequency Oscillations (HFO) in intraoperative electrocorticography (ECoG) may guide the surgeon by delineating the epileptogenic zone. We designed a modular spiking neural network (SNN) in a mixed-signal neuromorphic device to process the ECoG in real-time. We exploit the variability of the inhomogeneous silicon neurons to achieve efficient sparse and decorrelated temporal signal encoding.

Background: Among patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), acute vasoreactivity testing during right heart catheterization may identify acute vasoresponders, for whom treatment with high-dose calcium channel blockers (CCBs) is recommended. However, long-term outcomes in the current era remain largely unknown. We sought to evaluate the implications of acute vasoreactivity response for long-term response to CCBs and other outcomes.

Objective: To investigate psychiatric service use depending on distances (travel times) to inpatient and outpatient service sites.
Methods: Retrospective cohort analysis of all patients aged 18-64 years who had been treated in a Swiss psychiatric services system in 2022.
Results: Outpatient service utilization rates decreased statistically significantly with increasing distance (travel time by public transportation) between the place of residence and the responsible outpatient clinic.

Long QT syndrome (LQTS) is a congenital ion channel disorder causing prolonged ventricular repolarization and presents on surface ECG with a prolonged QTc interval. This condition predisposes to ventricular arrhythmias and also sudden cardiac death. LQTS without appropriate therapy during pregnancy and the postnatal phase poses an additionally increased risk of sudden cardiac death due to physiological changes associated with gestation.

BCG instillations are considered to be the standard of care therapy for superficial urothelial bladder carcinoma. Although serious adverse events are uncommon, the presence of high fever for at least two days in conjunction with systemic and/or local organ manifestations (except for urogenital symptoms), with the exclusion of other causes, suffice for the diagnosis of a disseminated BCG infection. Microbiologic detection of the pathogen is not necessary for diagnosis, as the detection of granuloma is more often successful and sufficient.

Non-viral infections of the liver are rare to very rare compared to viral infections. They can be caused by various bacteria, helminths, protozoa, and fungi, often leading to liver involvement during dissemination. Some of these infections affect in particular immunocompromised individuals, while others need to be considered in the differential diagnostic work-up in patients returning from tropical countries.

Background: This study aimed to assess if there are sex differences in the functional outcome of intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) among patients with lacunar stroke (LS).
Methods: Consecutive patients admitted from 1 January 2014 to 31 January 2020 to hospitals participating in the Swiss Stroke Registry presenting with LS and treated with IVT were included. The study population was then divided into two groups based on patient sex, and a multivariable ordinal logistic regression analysis was performed to uncover sex differences in the modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score at 90 days after stroke.
