Injuries to the cervical spine are a diagnostic challenge as, although they are rare in relation to the overall population, they should not be overlooked under any circumstances. This article presents the diagnostic procedure in the emergency department, starting with the patient's medical history and subsequently clinical and neurological examinations. As a result, the clinical decision tools national emergency X‑radiography utilization study (NEXUS) criteria and the Canadian C‑spine rule (CCR) are discussed.

[State of digitalization in dermatopathology].

As in general pathology, digitalization is also inexorably making its way into dermatopathology. This article examines the current state of digitalization in German dermatopathology laboratories based on the authors' own experiences, the current study situation, and a survey of members of the Dermatological Histology Working Group (ADH). Experiences with the establishment of a digital laboratory workflow, artificial intelligence (AI)-based assistance systems, and whole slide images (WSI)-based training programs are discussed.

Testosterone is a natural hormone which is an essential factor to maintain the physical and emotional well-being in men, regardless of age. Male hypogonadism is an endocrinal condition of testosterone deficiency with the potential to cause multiple physical complaints and psychosocial problems. The condition can be of primary (due to testicular injury), secondary (due to diseases of the hypothalamus or pituitary gland) or functional nature (due to comorbidities, such as inflammatory diseases, obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus).

Despite maximally motivated and professionally outstanding young talent, the particularly stressful surgical disciplines have recruitment concerns. In recent years various sections and subsidiary societies of the German Society for Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery (DGOU) have developed and distributed personnel and institution-related certificates. Organ-specific and procedure-specific certificates are very popular to confer increased visibility to individuals and institutions.

Giant axonal neuropathy (GAN): cross-sectional data on phenotypes, genotypes, and proteomic signature from a German cohort.

Giant axonal neuropathy (GAN) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease affecting the peripheral and central nervous system and is caused by bi-allelic variants in the GAN gene, leading to loss of functional gigaxonin protein. A treatment does not exist, but a first clinical trial using a gene therapy approach has recently been completed. Here, we conducted the first systematic study of GAN patients treated by German-speaking child neurologists.

[Structure and process evaluation of complex interventions in pain therapy : Description of a methodological approach using the example of POET-Pain].

To evaluate the quality of care, particularly in the case of new forms of healthcare interventions, the healthcare services to be provided are defined and documented in advance. The presented explanatory sequential mixed methods design combines quantitative and qualitative data collection and the analysis enables a deeper understanding of a new healthcare intervention. Using the example of the POET-Pain project, which investigates the effect of a perioperative transitional pain service (TPS), the methodological application of the explanatory sequential mixed methods design is demonstrated in order to present the structural and process evaluation of the new healthcare intervention (in this case TPS) and to understand its influence on the quality of care.

[Clues in dermatopathological diagnostics].

Numerous diagnostic clues are used in routine dermatopathological diagnostics. Ideally, a diagnostic clue can lead directly to a specific diagnosis and save further time-consuming additional diagnostic procedures. This article discusses the concept of "clues to diagnosis" starting from its historical beginnings with a review of relevant studies and including current literature.

Automated tooth segmentation in magnetic resonance scans using deep learning - A pilot study.

Objectives: The main objective was to develop and evaluate an artificial intelligence model for tooth segmentation in magnetic resonance (MR) scans.

Methods: MR scans of 20 patients performed with a commercial 64-channel head coil with a T1-weighted 3D-SPACE (Sampling Perfection with Application Optimized Contrasts using different flip angle Evolution) sequence were included. Sixteen datasets were used for model training and 4 for accuracy evaluation.

Substantial nerve lesions almost always lead to persistent functional deficits, even with ideal treatment. Nerve lesions commonly occur in young patients, are often part of complex injuries, and are repeatedly diagnosed and treated with delay. Functional outcome crucially depends on early and adequate treatment.

Sequential adaptive e-learning and hands-on simulator training for unilateral biportal endoscopy (UBE) of the lumbar spine - results from an EANS Young Neurosurgeons hands-on course.

Introduction: Unilateral biportal endoscopy (UBE) is a minimally invasive surgical (MIS) technique utilized for lumbar decompression, which has recently gained popularity in Europe. We aimed to explore the value of sequential adaptive e-learning, followed by simulator-based hands-on training modules for UBE at the occasion of the 2024 EANS Young Neurosurgeons meeting.

Materials And Methods: An adaptive e-learning was designed by learning engineers (Area 9 Lyceum), based on theoretical content provided by two endoscopic spine surgeons.
