We report the case of a young patient with severe hypoxic brain injury after cardiopulmonary resuscitation, resulting in brain death/death by neurologic criteria (BD/DNC). Consistent with the patient's expressed wishes, treatment was sustained to facilitate organ donation. However, in the context of a severe post-resuscitation syndrome and physiological disturbances resulting from BD/DNC, refractory circulatory shock ensued.

Background: Patients who have had prior injections, surgeries such as arthroscopies, and have existing osteosynthetic implants in the hip and knee have an increased risk of periprosthetic infections when undergoing hip (THA) or total knee arthroplasty (TKA).

Osteosynthesis: For patients with osteosynthetic implants in the knee joint, a two-stage procedure (implant removal followed by TKA) is recommended based on the available literature and the high colonization rates. A two-stage procedure is also recommended for patients with hip implants.

[Treatment of geriatric odontoid fractures].

The treatment of odontoid fractures in geriatric patients, particularly type II fractures, remains controversial. In biologically young patients, studies suggest advantages of surgical treatment in terms of mortality; however, this advantage is not observed in geriatric patients. While the mortality appears to be higher after conservative treatment in patients aged 65-80 years, there are studies that have shown no differences in mortality for patients aged 80 years or older and even showed advantages of conservative treatment in this age group.

[Treatment of cancer-related pain-From pharmacotherapy to invasive procedures].

Depending on the stage of the tumor up to 80% of the patients suffer from cancer-related pain but treatment is often inadequate. Multiple causes can trigger pain and these can be due to the tumor itself, its secondary consequences but also treatment related. A differentiated assessment and individually tailored treatment of cancer-related pain not only improve the quality of life but also reduce the risk of pain chronification.

[Measuring Attitudes towards Health Services Research among Representatives of German Rehabilitation Facilities: The REHA-KNOWS Study].

Purpose: The REHA-KNOWS study explores the perceptions of practice representatives of rehabilitation facilities in Southwest Germany regarding (healthcare) research and shows benefits and barriers in knowledge transfer from the perspective of practice. For this purpose, an instrument with 12 5-level items was developed, which is exploratively examined in this paper. The instrument includes statements on the benefits, costs and added value of rehabilitation research projects as well as on the framework conditions in the facilities.

Background: Age-appropriate speech development is a primary aim of the rehabilitation of children treated with cochlear implants (CI). Various assessment tools are available, including the speech development test for 2‑year-olds (SETK-2). All tests are normalized to normal-hearing children; additionally, results are evaluated according to age and the duration of CI (hearing age).

In acute crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic, scientific questions need to be addressed quickly in order to protect the health of the population and to maintain the function of the healthcare system. The prevailing urgency and the large number of issues to be addressed, combined with the limitation of time, personnel, or monetary resources make prioritization indispensable. In the COVID-19 Evidence Ecosystem (CEOsys) project initiated by the University Medicine Network (NUM), a procedure for the rapid prioritization of questions was used specifically for evidence syntheses and clinical guideline recommendations, which was further developed in the follow-up project PREparedness and Pandemic Response in Germany (PREPARED).
