Extracellular vesicles (EVs) secreted by astrocytes (ADEVs) mediate numerous biological processes, providing insights into damage, repair, and protection following ischemic stroke (IS). This pilot study aimed to broaden the current knowledge on the astrocyte response to ischemia by dynamically assessing the aquaporin-4 (AQP4) and glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) as cargo proteins of these vesicles in eighteen acute IS patients and nine controls. EV proteins were detected by Western blotting and followed 24 h (D1), 7 days (D7), and one month (M1) after symptoms onset.

Off-label practice in pediatrics requires relentless engagement from all the health professionals involved. Community pharmacists are the last ones in the prescribing-dispensing chain; therefore, they have the key responsibility of verifying the correctness of a treatment. A cross-sectional study was conducted for assessing the awareness and views of Romanian community pharmacists, regarding off-label drugs in the pediatric population, through a 28-item questionnaire comprising five sections of different topics (general knowledge, frequency of prescribing and dispensing off-label medication, views, and attitudes).

There is an increasing prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM), particularly type 2 DM (T2DM), and its associated complications. T2DM is linked to insulin resistance, chronic inflammation, and oxidative stress, which can lead to both macrovascular and microvascular complications, including peripheral diabetic neuropathy (PDN). Inflammatory processes play a key role in the development and progression of T2DM and its complications, with specific markers like C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukins (ILs), and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α being associated with increased risk.

The gold standard for diagnosis is represented by the measurement of LV end-diastolic pressure (LVEDP) during cardiac catheterization, but it has the disadvantage of being an invasive procedure. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between LVEDP and cardiac serum biomarkers such as natriuretic peptides (mid-regional pro-atrial natriuretic peptide [MR-proANP], B-type natriuretic peptide [BNP], and N-terminal prohormone BNP [NT-proBNP]), soluble ST2 (sST2), galectin-3 and mid-regional pro-adrenomedullin (MR-proAMD).

Vitamin D deficiency (VDD) is widespread around the world and has been extensively documented to affect various health conditions, including the cognitive functioning of the brain. Serum 25-hydroxylated forms of vitamin D are traditionally used to determine vitamin D status. However, there is now evidence that cholecalciferol activation can occur and be controlled by locally expressed enzymes in the brain.

Anomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery (ALCAPA) is a rare and potentially life-threatening condition affecting infants that requires immediate corrective surgery to restore blood flow to the myocardium. We present a case of an infant with ALCAPA and severe heart failure. What sets this case apart is the utilization of speckle-tracking echocardiography as a non-invasive method for assessing global and regional myocardial function before and after surgical intervention.

In the last decade, increasing evidence has suggested that high-grade serous ovarian cancers may have their origin in the fallopian tube rather than the ovary. This emerging theory presents an opportunity to prevent epithelial ovarian cancer by incorporating prophylactic bilateral salpingectomy into all surgical procedures for average-risk women. The aim of this review is to investigate the hypothesis that bilateral salpingectomy (BS) may have a negative impact on ovarian reserve, not only following hysterectomy for benign uterine pathologies but also when performed during cesarean sections as a method of sterilization or as a treatment for hydrosalpinx in Assisted Reproductive Technology interventions.
