Electronic address:

The rise of antimicrobial resistance has made necessary the increase of the antibacterial arsenal against multidrug-resistant bacteria. In this context, colistin has re-emerged as a first-line antibiotic in critical situations despite its nephro- and neuro- toxicity at peripheral level. However, the mechanism underlying its toxicity remains unknown, particularly in relation to the central nervous system (CNS).

Learners to Leaders: Impact of Instructor Roles on Nursing Students' Professional Development in Clinical Simulations.

Nurs Rep

November 2024

Departamento de Enfermería, Facultad de Ciencias de la Salud de Manresa, Universitat de Vic-Universitat Central de Catalunya (UVic-UCC), Av. Universitària, 4-6, 08242 Manresa, Spain.

Background/objectives: Clinical simulation is a pivotal educational strategy in nursing, facilitating the integration of theoretical knowledge with practical skills in a safe environment. While the benefits of simulation in enhancing technical and non-technical competencies are well-documented, the transition of nursing students to the role of instructors within these simulations remains underexplored, particularly in the Spanish context. This study aims to investigate how assuming the instructor role in clinical simulations impacts the professional development of fourth-year nursing students.

DiffMAP-GP: Continuous 2D diffusion maps from particle trajectories without data binning using Gaussian processes.

Diffusion coefficients often vary across regions, such as cellular membranes, and quantifying their variation can provide valuable insight into local membrane properties such as composition and stiffness. Toward quantifying diffusion coefficient spatial maps and uncertainties from particle tracks, we develop a Bayesian framework (DiffMAP-GP) by placing Gaussian process (GP) priors on the family of candidate maps. For sake of computational efficiency, we leverage inducing point methods on GPs arising from the mathematical structure of the data giving rise to nonconjugate likelihood-prior pairs.

Article Synopsis
  • - Organizing pneumonia (OP) has been identified in patients with inflammatory demyelinating diseases (IDDs) after COVID-19, particularly those treated with anti-CD20 therapies, but comprehensive data is scarce.
  • - This study analyzed 19 patients with conditions like multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica who developed COVID-19-associated OP; symptoms included intermittent fever, and most required hospitalization, but none died.
  • - After about 1.5 years of follow-up, most lung issues resolved, although many patients experienced long-COVID symptoms; the study suggests that OP should be considered in anti-CD20-treated patients exhibiting specific CT findings and fever.

  • Bismuth quadruple therapies (BQTs) have been effective in treating Helicobacter pylori infections in Europe, particularly in the face of antibiotic resistance, with notable use increasing from 8.6% in 2013 to 39% in 2021.
  • An analysis of data from nearly 50,000 patients indicated that the single-capsule BQT was the most common regimen and achieved over 90% effectiveness with certain combinations.
  • Key factors that improved treatment success included adherence to the regimen, use of high-dose proton pump inhibitors, and implementing the therapy as a first-line treatment.

() is a Gram-positive bacterium that causes infections ranging from mild superficial cases to more severe, potentially fatal conditions. Many photosensitisers used in photodynamic therapy are more effective against superficial infections due to limitations in treating deeper tissue infections. Recently, attention to this bacterium has increased due to the emergence of multidrug-resistant strains, which complicate antibiotic treatment.

Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the role of specific striatal circuits in motor control and behavior in both healthy and Huntington's Disease (HD) mice, focusing on the direct and indirect pathways from the dorsolateral (DLS) and dorsomedial striatum (DMS).
  • Optogenetic stimulation of these pathways in wild type mice showed slight improvements in locomotion and motor learning but did not affect exploratory behavior.
  • In contrast, the same stimulation in HD mice did not produce any behavioral changes, suggesting that targeting cortico-striatal circuits may be a more effective approach for treating motor symptoms in HD rather than focusing solely on striatal output pathways.

Article Synopsis
  • Lung transplantation is often necessary for severe lung diseases, but the success rates are low, making lung bioengineering a potential alternative using decellularized lung extracellular matrix (ECM).
  • The study focused on improving lung recellularization by seeding decellularized lungs with mesenchymal stem cells and applying photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) at two different wavelengths (660 nm for recellularization and 880 nm for sterilization).
  • Results showed that PBMT helped maintain important structural components of the lungs and modulated pro-inflammatory cytokines, indicating its potential to enhance therapeutic strategies in lung bioengineering.

Muscle injuries and the subsequent regeneration events compromise muscle homeostasis at morphological, functional and molecular levels. Among the molecular alterations, those derived from the mitochondrial function are especially relevant. We analysed the mitochondrial dynamics, the redox balance, the protein oxidation and the main protein repairing mechanisms after 9 days of injury in the rat gastrocnemius muscle.

Electronic address:

A combination of Δ-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ-THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) at non-psychoactive doses was previously demonstrated to reduce cognitive decline in APP/PS1 mice, an animal model of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the neurobiological substrates underlying these therapeutic properties of Δ-THC and CBD are not fully understood. Considering that dysregulation of glutamatergic activity contributes to cognitive impairment in AD, the present study evaluates the hypothesis that the combination of these two natural cannabinoids might reverse the alterations in glutamate dynamics within the hippocampus of this animal model of AD.

Article Synopsis
  • - Chronic respiratory diseases can lead to irreversible lung damage, making lung transplantation necessary, and organ engineering with stem cells shows promise for generating new organs.
  • - This study systematically reviewed literature on decellularised lungs' extracellular matrix (ECM) conditions after various sterilisation processes, following PRISMA guidelines and analyzing five positive-result articles.
  • - The findings indicate that all sterilisation methods, whether physical or chemical, negatively impact the ECM, and no ideal sterilisation protocol was identified for effective pulmonary scaffold preparation in tissue or organ engineering.
