Introduction: We aimed to identify the incidence and risk factors of spontaneous preterm birth in pessary carriers with singleton pregnancies and a short cervix in the mid-trimester of pregnancy.

Material And Methods: Patient data were obtained from the PECEP Trial. We analyzed singleton pregnancies in pessary carriers with a short cervix (≤25 mm) between 18 and 22 gestational weeks.

Telling the story of the opioid crisis: A narrative analysis of the TV series Dopesick.

Dopesick (2021) is the first TV series whose plot deals exclusively with the opioid crisis in the United States. The current study uses narrative analysis and framing theory to explore this series, discussing its portrayal of the people and themes involved in the opioid crisis. Our analysis found that although Dopesick attempts to portray multiple dimensions of the opioid crisis, its narrative oversimplifies the story in attributing the cause of the problem almost exclusively to Purdue Pharma and its director Richard Sackler, while downplaying other factors that contributed to the opioid crisis.

Cardiac involvement in the catastrophic antiphospholipid syndrome (CAPS): Lessons from the "CAPS registry".

Objective: To analyze the demographic, clinical, and laboratory characteristics of catastrophic antiphospholipid syndrome (CAPS) patients with cardiac involvement, and to identify the factors associated with this cardiac involvement.

Material And Methods: Based on the analysis of the "CAPS Registry", the demographic, clinical, and serological characteristics of patients with cardiac involvement were analyzed. Cardiac involvement was defined as heart failure, valvular disease, acute myocardial infarction, pericardial effusion, pulmonary arterial hypertension, systolic dysfunction, intracardiac thrombosis, and microvascular disease.

Influence of Photosensitizer on Photodynamic Therapy for Peri-Implantitis: A Systematic Review.

The treatment of peri-implantitis is challenging in the clinical practice of implant dentistry. With limited therapeutic options and drug resistance, there is a need for alternative methods, such as photodynamic therapy (PDT), which is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat peri-implantitis. This study evaluated whether the type of photosensitizer used influences the results of inflammatory control, reduction in peri-implant pocket depth, bleeding during probing, and reduction in bone loss in the dental implant region.

The use of smart devices such as mobile phones (smartphones) or smart watches (smartwatch) to promote physical activity and well-being has increased in recent years among patients and professionals in primary care. This change is driven by the access of patients and professionals to a large catalog of health applications, which can complement the provision of services and promote the empowerment of patients in their own health and lifestyles. These applications are beginning to be integrated with areas such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) and data storage in the cloud, among other emerging technological systems, offering a new complementary approach to clinical practice known so far.

Learning Continuous 2D Diffusion Maps from Particle Trajectories without Data Binning.

Diffusion coefficients often vary across regions, such as cellular membranes, and quantifying their variation can provide valuable insight into local membrane properties such as composition and stiffness. Toward quantifying diffusion coefficient spatial maps and uncertainties from particle tracks, we use a Bayesian method and place Gaussian Process (GP) Priors on the maps. For the sake of computational efficiency, we leverage inducing point methods on GPs arising from the mathematical structure of the data giving rise to non-conjugate likelihood-prior pairs.

Pharmacology has broadened its scope considerably in recent decades. Initially, it was of interest to chemists, doctors and pharmacists. In recent years, however, it has been incorporated into the teaching of biologists, molecular biologists, biotechnologists, chemical engineers and many health professionals, among others.

Background: A scoping review found that most studies on women's health in multiple sclerosis (MS) focused on pregnancy, fetal/neonatal outcomes and sexual dysfunction. Few studies addressed menopause, contraception, gynecologic cancers/cancer screening. However, the perceived relative importance of these knowledge gaps to people living with MS and other partners is unknown.

Converging and evolving immuno-genomic routes toward immune escape in breast cancer.

The interactions between tumor and immune cells along the course of breast cancer progression remain largely unknown. Here, we extensively characterize multiple sequential and parallel multiregion tumor and blood specimens of an index patient and a cohort of metastatic triple-negative breast cancers. We demonstrate that a continuous increase in tumor genomic heterogeneity and distinct molecular clocks correlated with resistance to treatment, eventually allowing tumors to escape from immune control.

Background And Aim Of The Study: There are still patients with hepatitisC in Spain who have yet to be diagnosed, but their clinical profile is unclear. In 2021, 21.93% of patients diagnosed had cirrhosis and were mostly treatment-naïve.

Complexity of needs in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients using the ENP-E scale in the north-eastern region of Spain.

Objectives: This study aimed to explore the clinical characteristics of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients in Spain's north-eastern region, their inclusion in chronic care programmes, and their psychosocial and spiritual needs (PSNs).

Methods: A longitudinal descriptive study in adult patients with ALS. We analyzed clinical variables and participation in chronicity and PSNs assessment using the tool Psychosocial and Spiritual Needs Evaluation scale in end-of-life patients (ENP-E scale).

Osteoporosis and Fragility Fractures in Patients with Liver Cirrhosis: Usefulness of FRAX as a Screening Tool.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to assess the prevalence of osteoporosis and fragility fractures in patients with liver cirrhosis (LC) and determine the associated risk factors, evaluating the usefulness of FRAX as a screening method to identify patients at a higher risk of fracture.

Methods: This was a cross-sectional study. Demographic, clinical, and analytical data were collected in a randomized sample of LC patients attending the Hepatology Department of a university hospital.

Drug-Related Problems in Elderly Patients Attended to by Emergency Services.

The progressive aging and comorbidities of the population have led to an increase in the number of patients with polypharmacy attended to in the emergency department. Drug-related problems (DRPs) have become a major cause of admission to these units, as well as a high rate of short-term readmissions. Anticoagulants, antibiotics, antidiabetics, and opioids have been shown to be the most common drugs involved in this issue.

Relationship between Diet Quality and Socioeconomic and Health-Related Factors in Adolescents by Gender.

Adolescence is a key period for consolidating heathy lifestyles and proper eating habits that can last into adulthood. To analyze the diet quality of Spanish adolescents and its association with socioeconomic factors and health behaviors by gender, a cross-sectional study was conducted using data from the DESKcohort project, consisting of a biannual panel survey on health, health behaviors, and associated determinants, collected in secondary education centers. The study population consisted of 7319 students aged 12 to 18 years.

Criticality supports cross-frequency cortical-thalamic information transfer during conscious states.

Consciousness is thought to be regulated by bidirectional information transfer between the cortex and thalamus, but the nature of this bidirectional communication - and its possible disruption in unconsciousness - remains poorly understood. Here, we present two main findings elucidating mechanisms of corticothalamic information transfer during conscious states. First, we identify a highly preserved spectral channel of cortical-thalamic communication that is present during conscious states, but which is diminished during the loss of consciousness and enhanced during psychedelic states.

Social inequalities in the use of physiotherapy in women diagnosed with breast cancer in Barcelona: DAMA cohort.

Purpose: This study aimed to analyze social inequalities in the use and access of physiotherapy service and its clinical and socio-economic determinants in women diagnosed with breast cancer in the hospital network of Barcelona.

Methods: Data from 2235 women belonging to the mixed (prospective and retrospective) DAMA Cohort were analyzed, including demographic, socio-economic, clinical, and breast cancer treatment outcomes. To determine the influence of such variables on access to physiotherapy, different Poisson regression models with robust variance (obtaining Prevalence Ratios and confidence intervals) were estimated.

Since the emergence of SARS-CoV-2, many genetic variations within its genome have been identified, but only a few mutations have been found in nonstructural proteins (NSPs). Among this class of viral proteins, NSP3 is a multidomain protein with 16 different domains, and its largest domain is known as the macrodomain or Mac1 domain. In this study, we present a virtual screening campaign in which we computationally evaluated the NCI anticancer library against the NSP3 Mac1 domain, using Molegro Virtual Docker.

Despite use of tecovirimat since the beginning of the 2022 outbreak, few data have been published on its antiviral effect in humans. We here predict tecovirimat efficacy using a unique set of data in nonhuman primates (NHPs) and humans. We analyzed tecovirimat antiviral activity on viral kinetics in NHP to characterize its concentration-effect relationship in vivo.
