Cellular immune responses play a fundamental role in controlling viral replication and AIDS progression in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected subjects and in simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV)-infected macaques. Integrase defective lentiviral vector (IDLV) represents a promising vaccine candidate, inducing functional and durable immune responses in mice and non-human primates. Here, we designed HIV- and SIV-based IDLVs to express the HIVACAT T cell immunogen (HTI), a mosaic antigen designed to cover vulnerable sites in HIV-1 Gag, Pol, Vif, and Nef.

Semantic segmentation with DenseNets for carotid artery ultrasound plaque segmentation and CIMT estimation.

Artif Intell Med

March 2020

Departament de Matemà tiques i Informà tica, Universitat de Barcelona, Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes 585, 08007 Barcelona, Spain.

Background And Objective: The measurement of carotid intima media thickness (CIMT) in ultrasound images can be used to detect the presence of atherosclerotic plaques. Usually, the CIMT estimation strategy is semi-automatic, since it requires: (1) a manual examination of the ultrasound image for the localization of a region of interest (ROI), a fast and useful operation when only a small number of images need to be measured; and (2) an automatic delineation of the CIM region within the ROI. The existing efforts for automating the process have replicated the same two-step structure, resulting in two consecutive independent approaches.

Unveiling the mechanism of action of a drug is key to understand the benefits and adverse reactions of a medication in an organism. However, in complex diseases such as heart diseases there is not a unique mechanism of action but a wide range of different responses depending on the patient. Exploring this collection of mechanisms is one of the clues for a future personalized medicine.

Super-resolution imaging techniques have largely improved our capabilities to visualize nanometric structures in biological systems. Their application further permits the quantitation relevant parameters to determine the molecular organization and stoichiometry in cells. However, the inherently stochastic nature of fluorescence emission and labeling strategies imposes the use of dedicated methods to accurately estimate these parameters.
