Sterol composition plays a crucial role in determining the ability of yeast cells to withstand high temperatures, an essential trait in biotechnology. Using a targeted evolution strategy involving fluconazole (FCNZ), an inhibitor of the sterol biosynthesis pathway, and the immunosuppressant FK506, we aimed to enhance thermotolerance in an industrial baker's yeast population by modifying their sterol composition. This approach yielded six isolates capable of proliferating in liquid YPD with μ values ranging from 0.

This research investigated the acidogenic fermentation (AF) of sugar cane molasses in an up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor for the production of carboxylates. The first step was to assess the optimum process temperature (25, 35 or 55 ºC) using two different granular inocula, one from a brewery company (BGS) and other from a paper plant company (PGS). These experiments determined that the most suitable temperature for carboxylates production was 25 ºC, obtaining higher bioconversions (27.

The Spodoptera genus is defined as the pest-rich genus because it contains some of the most destructive lepidopteran crop pests, characterized by a wide host range. During feeding, the caterpillars release small amounts of oral secretion (OS) onto the wounded leaves. This secretion contains herbivore-induced molecular patterns (HAMPs) that activate the plant defense response, as well as effectors that may inhibit or diminish the plant's anti-herbivory response.

Determining the energetics of triplet electronic states of nucleobases in the biological macromolecular environment of nucleic acids is essential for an accurate description of the mechanism of photosensitization and the design of drugs for cancer treatment. In this work, we aim at developing a methodological approach to obtain accurate free energies of triplets in DNA beyond the state of the art, able to reproduce the decrease of triplet energies measured experimentally for in DNA (270 kJ/mol) vs in the isolated nucleotide in aqueous solution (310 kJ/mol). For such purposes, we adapt the free energy perturbation method to compute the free energy related to the transformation of a pure singlet state into a pure triplet state via "alchemical" intermediates with mixed singlet-triplet nature.

Magnesium and calcium carbonate minerals are significant reservoirs of Earth's carbon and understanding their behavior under different conditions is crucial for elucidating the mechanisms of deep carbon storage. Huntite, MgCa(CO), is one of the two stable calcium magnesium carbonate phases, together with dolomite. The distinctive cation coordination environment of Ca atoms compared to calcite-type and dolomite structures makes huntite a comparatively less dense phase.

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) and Ochratoxin A (OTA) are considered the most important mycotoxins in terms of food safety. The aim of this study was to evaluate the hepatotoxicity of AFB1 and OTA exposure in Wistar rats and to assess the beneficial effect of fermented whey (FW) and pumpkin (P) as functional ingredients through a proteomic approach. For the experimental procedures, rats were fed AFB1 and OTA individually or in combination, with the addition of FW or a FW-P mixture during 28 days.

Fibrous by-products, including defective or double cocoons, are obtained during silk processing. These cocoons primarily contain fibroin and sericin (SS) proteins along with minor amounts of wax and mineral salts. In conventional textile processes, SS is removed in the production of smooth, lustrous silk threads, and is typically discarded.

Background/objectives: Studies on executive functions in child sex offenders relate their findings to the presence of pedophilia, but they are not able to distinguish between paraphilia and abuse. It is therefore this lack of a distinction that leads us to complement the existing information. Thus, the purpose of this review is to find all available evidence on the neurocognitive and neuroanatomical differences in executive functions among pedophilic and non-pedophilic child sex offenders, and non-offender pedophiles.

Resting state electroencephalography (EEG) has proved useful in studying electrophysiological changes in neurodegenerative diseases. In many neuropathologies, microstate analysis of the eyes-closed (EC) scalp EEG is a robust and highly reproducible technique for assessing topological changes with high temporal resolution. However, scalp EEG microstate maps tend to underestimate the non-occipital or non-alpha-band networks, which can also be used to detect neuropathological changes.

High costs and project-based (short-term) financing mean that coastal engineering projects are often undertaken in the absence of appropriate post-construction monitoring programmes. Consequently, the performance of shoreline-stabilizing structures or beach nourishments cannot be properly quantified. Given the high value of beaches and the increase in erosion problems and coastal engineering responses, managers require as much accurate data as possible to support efficient decision-making.

Cardiovascular risk factors begin in childhood and track into adulthood, increasing the possibility of impaired cardiometabolic health. Adopting healthy dietary patterns can help curb childhood obesity, a worrisome epidemic problem at present. In the era of personalized nutrition, dietary recommendations should be adapted to different stages of life, including children (older than 3 years) and adolescents.

Introduction: Due to the current climatic situation of the planet and the increase in concern for the environment, the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) aims to be a model for the university community in terms of the preservation of the ecosystem and prevention of the environmental impact caused by daily tasks; thus, aligning itself with the goals of the 2030 Agenda. For this reason, a project has been launched to carry out the green transformation of the UPV toward a university that prioritizes sustainability in all its areas.
Methods: As part of this project, a survey was conducted using anonymous online questionnaires for the student population and employees.

Despite high initial vaccination rates, Spain's current COVID-19 vaccination coverage in recommended groups does not meet WHO targets. For the upcoming season, challenges include revising vaccination age, updating risk groups, and unifying criteria with flu vaccine co-administration. European Commission's advance purchase agreements limit access to certain vaccines, and the need for vaccines effective against current variants adds administrative complexities.

Pulmonary embolism (PE) and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) remain a major health issue worldwide with potential overlapping pathophysiological mechanisms. PE, the most severe form of venous thromboembolism, is associated with high morbidity and mortality, presenting challenges in management and prevention, especially in high-risk populations. OSA is a prevalent condition characterized by repeated episodes of upper airway closure resulting in intermittent hypoxia and sleep fragmentation.

The budding yeast Xrn1 protein shuttles between the nucleus, where it stimulates transcription, and the cytoplasm, where it executes the major cytoplasmic mRNA decay. In the cytoplasm, apart from catalyzing 5'→3' decay onto non translated mRNAs, Xrn1 can follow the last translating ribosome to degrade the decapped mRNA template, a process known as "cotranslational mRNA decay". We have previously observed that the import of Xrn1 to the nucleus is required for efficient cytoplasmic mRNA decay.

In the field of nanocluster catalysis, it is crucial to understand the interplay of different parameters, such as ligands, support and pretreatment and their effect on the catalytic process. In this study, we chose the selective hydrogenation of phenylacetylene as a model reaction and employed two gold nanoclusters as catalysts, the phosphine protected Au and the thiolate protected Au, each with different binding motifs. They were supported on MgO, AlO and a hydrotalcite (HT), chosen for their different acidity.

High defect concentrations at the interfaces are the basis of charge extraction losses and instability in perovskite solar cells. Surface engineering with organic cations is a common practice to solve this issue. However, the full implications of the counteranions of these cations for device functioning are often neglected.

The excellent optical and electronic properties of halide perovskite materials have attracted researchers to investigate this particular field. However, the instability in ambient conditions and toxicity of materials like lead have given some setbacks to commercial use. To overcome these issues, perovskite-inspired materials with less toxic and excellent air-stable materials are being studied.
