Recent advances in multiple sclerosis (MS) management have shifted perspectives on treatment strategies, advocating for the early initiation of high-efficacy disease-modifying therapies (heDMTs). This perspective review discusses the rationale, benefits, and challenges associated with early heDMT initiation, reflecting on the obsolescence of the traditional "first-line" and "second-line" treatment classifications. The article emerges from the last update of the consensus document of the Spanish Society of Neurology on the treatment of MS.

Molecular dynamics simulations at constant temperature and pressure were carried out to investigate the structural, dynamical, and dielectric properties of succinonitrile in its plastic and liquid phases at several thermodynamic states. A six-site united atom model was employed with a force field incorporating an intramolecular torsional term that accurately describes gauche and trans conformers. Analysis of the radial distribution function showed that succinonitrile adopts a body-centered cubic arrangement below its melting point, transitioning to a less ordered state in the liquid phase.

This study explores the behavior of organophosphate esters (OPEs) in different species within marine ecosystems and their potential for bioaccumulation and biomagnification. The concentrations of OPEs were analyzed in marine species (krill (Meganyctiphanes norvegica), jellyfish (Pelagia noctiluca), European sardine (Sardina pilchardus), European anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus), European hake (Merluccius merluccius), loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta), European squid (Loligo vulgaris), fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus) and striped dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba)) from different trophic levels, to understand their distribution and contamination profiles. The study provides insights into the metabolism of OPEs and their biomagnification on species occupying higher trophic levels.

Chagas disease (CD) has become a worldwide problem due to globalization. In Europe, most cases are imported and are diagnosed in the chronic phase by two serological tests, as recommended by the World Health Organization. Chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassays (CMIAs) are an emerging alternative to the diagnostic standard.

Individuals with pancreatic-related health conditions usually show lower diversity and different composition of bacterial and viral species between the gut and oral microbiomes compared to healthy individuals. We performed a thorough microbiome analysis, using deep shotgun sequencing of stool and saliva samples obtained from patients with chronic pancreatitis (CP), pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), and healthy controls (HCs).We observed similar microbiota composition at the species level in both the gut and oral samples in PDAC patients compared to HCs, among which the most distinctive finding was that the abundance of oral-originated species did not differ between the oral and the gut samples.

Background: Innovative algorithms for wearable devices and garments are critical for diagnosing and monitoring disease (such as lateral epicondylitis (LE)) progression. LE affects individuals across various professions and causes daily problems.
Methods: We analyzed signals from the forearm muscles of 14 healthy controls and 14 LE patients using high-density surface electromyography.

[]Cycloparaphenylenes ([]CPPs) are strained macrocycles, comprising only sp-hybridized carbon atoms. In recent years, []CPPs have become of great research interest in the field of supramolecular chemistry since their special structure enables the formation of novel host-guest complexes. In this work, we investigate the gas-phase chemistry of noncovalent complexes of [10-12]CPP with the pristine fullerenes C and the endohedral metallofullerenes (EMFs) ScN@-C, ScN@-C and MN@-C (M = Sc, Y, Lu, Gd).

A cost-effective Daphnia magna testing framework was applied to identify emerging hazards such as neurological and cardiovascular defects as well as antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs), related to pharmaceuticals present in waste water treated (WWTP) effluent discharged into rivers. D. magna juveniles were exposed during 48 h to water samples from three rivers in the vicinity of Barcelona (NE Spain), Besós, Llobregat and Onyar, upstream and downstream of WWTP discharging points.

Cell shape and function are intimately linked, in a way that is mediated by the forces exerted between cells and their environment. The relationship between cell shape and forces has been extensively studied for cells seeded on flat 2D substrates, but not for cells in more physiological 3D settings. Here, a technique called 3D micropatterned traction force microscopy (3D-µTFM) to confine cells in 3D wells of defined shape, while simultaneously measuring the forces transmitted between cells and their microenvironment is demonstrated.

The most used vasopressors in critically ill patients are exogenous catecholamines, mainly norepinephrine. Their use can be associated with serious adverse events and even increased mortality, especially if administered at high doses. In recent years, the addition of vasopressin has been proposed to counteract the deleterious effects of high doses of catecholamines (decatecholaminization) with the intention of improving the prognosis of these patients.

Background: Some regions of Spain are withdrawing their pregnancy screening program for congenital toxoplasmosis (CT). The Spanish Research Network of Congenital Toxoplasmosis (REIV-TOXO) was created to describe the current status of CT in Spain. The aims of this study were to describe the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of CT and to evaluate the effect of prenatal treatment on clinical outcomes to inform decision-making policies.

The rapid growth of population and the effects of climate change have placed unprecedented pressure on urban water supplies and pollution control. Consequently, it is essential to explore new local water resources in water-strained areas. To this end, this work focuses on evaluating pollutant removal effectiveness of decentralized treatment systems for groundwater reclamation.

The systematics of the family Dendrodorididae, with only three valid genera, is a challenge for integrative taxonomists. Its members lack hard structures for morphological comparisons and their mitochondrial and nuclear markers provide contradictory phylogenetic signals, making phylogenetic reconstructions difficult. This molecular discordance has been hypothesized to be the result of nuclear pseudogenes or exogenous contamination.

The capability of graphene oxide (GO) to enhance direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) and improve anaerobic digestion (AD) performance is gaining attention in AD literature. The present review discusses the implications of GO and its ambivalent role in AD. Under anaerobic conditions, GO is rapidly converted to biologically reduced graphene oxide (bioRGO) through microbial respiration.

Significance: The early detection and accurate monitoring of suspicious skin lesions are critical for effective dermatological diagnosis and treatment, particularly for reliable identification of the progression of nevi to melanoma. The traditional diagnostic framework, the ABCDE rule, provides a foundation for evaluating lesion characteristics by visual examination using dermoscopes. Simulations of skin lesion progression could improve the understanding of melanoma growth patterns.

The Z-alkene geometry is prevalent in various chemical compounds, including numerous building blocks, fine chemicals, and natural products. Unfortunately, established Mo, W, and Ru Z-selective catalysts lose their selectivity at high temperatures required for industrial processes like reactive distillation, which limits their synthetic applications. To address this issue, we develop a catalyst capable of providing Z-alkenes with high selectivity under harsh conditions.
