Photodynamic therapy (PDT) represents a promising approach for cancer treatment. Two structurally and functionally unrelated proteins, namely Omomyc and p31, are engineered as CD44-targeted inclusion bodies produced in recombinant bacteria. In this unusual particulate form, both types of protein materials selectively penetrate and kill CD44 tumor cells in culture, and upon local administration, promote destruction of tumoral tissue in orthotropic mouse models of human breast cancer. These findings support the concept of bacterial inclusion bodies as versatile protein materials suitable for application in chronic diseases that, like cancer, can benefit from a local slow release of therapeutic proteins.

Investigating environmental hazards than could affect appendicularians is of prime ecological interest because they are among the most abundant components of the mesozooplankton. This work shows that embryo development of the appendicularian is compromised by diatom bloom-derived biotoxins, even at concentrations in the same range as those measured after blooms. Developmental gene expression analysis of biotoxin-treated embryos uncovers an aberrant golf ball-like phenotype affecting morphogenesis, midline convergence, and tail elongation.

While quantitative components of fitness have been studied extensively in the context of invasive species, fewer studies have looked at qualitative components of fitness, such as behavioral plasticity, and their interaction with quantitative components, despite intuitive benefits over the course of an invasion. Wild daffodils of the section Ganymedes from the Iberian Peninsula as a source of mesembrane alkaloids.

The aim of this work was to perform a detailed study of the alkaloid content of Narcissus triandrus, as well as a complete analysis of the alkaloid profile of 18 wild populations, comprising all the taxa of the section Ganymedes. Through the application of a combination of spectroscopic and chromatographic methods, the isolation and structural elucidation of 3 compounds are reported for the first time from a natural source (2-oxomesembrenone, 7,7a-dehydromesembrenone and 2-oxoepimesembranol), together with the identification of 5 major common mesembrane alkaloids. Additionally, the GC-MS analysis of the alkaloid profile demonstrated the regular presence of mesembranes in all the studied plants, showing mesembrenone as the predominant compound without any typical Amaryllidaceae alkaloid being detected.

GSK3beta and E2F1 play an important role in the control of proliferation and apoptosis. Previous work has demonstrated that GSK3beta indirectly regulates E2F activity through modulation of cyclin D1 levels. In this work we show that GSK3beta phosphorylates human E2F1 in vitro at serine 403 and threonine 433, both residues localized at its transactivation domain.
