Three-dimensional (3D) neuronal cultures grown in hydrogels are promising platforms to design brain-like neuronal networks in vitro. However, the optimal properties of such cultures must be tuned to ensure a hydrogel matrix sufficiently porous to promote healthy development but also sufficiently rigid for structural support. Such an optimization is difficult since it implies the exploration of different hydrogel compositions and, at the same time, a functional analysis to validate neuronal culture viability.

Background: Olive oil consumption has been inversely associated with the risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, the impact of olive oil consumption on plasma metabolites remains poorly understood. This study aims to identify plasma metabolites related to total and specific types of olive oil consumption, and to assess the prospective associations of the identified multi-metabolite profiles with the risk of T2D and CVD.

Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Vitamin B is linked to cognitive performance, but its effectiveness may depend on the presence of other nutrients like folate and adherence to the Mediterranean diet.
  • A study involving 170 older participants showed a strong correlation between serum vitamin B levels and memory function among those with high adherence to the Mediterranean diet, while the link was weaker for those with lower adherence.
  • High adherence to the Mediterranean diet was associated with increased serum folate levels, indicating that dietary patterns influence cognitive function beyond just vitamin B intake.

Article Synopsis
  • - Vitamin B12 is crucial for many bodily functions, and its deficiency can lead to serious health issues, including problems related to the nervous and blood systems.
  • - A study involving 136 people at high cardiovascular risk found that higher vitamin B12 levels were linked to lower levels of inflammatory markers IL-6 and CRP, indicating a potential anti-inflammatory role.
  • - Similar results were replicated in aged mice, suggesting that vitamin B12 might help reduce inflammation by affecting the levels of these pro-inflammatory substances.

Electronic address:

Background: Phenolic compounds have been associated with protective effects against type-2 diabetes (T2D). We used a metabolomics approach to determine urinary phenolic metabolites associated with T2D and fasting plasma glucose.

Methods: This case-control study within the PREDIMED trial included 200 participants at high cardiovascular risk, 102 of whom were diagnosed with T2D.

Current evaluation and management of patients with chronic rhinosinusitis and nasal polyps.

Expert Rev Clin Immunol

December 2022

Rhinology Unit & Smell Clinic, Otorhinolaryngology Department, Hospital Clinic, Universitat de Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain.

Introduction: A clear understanding of the pathophysiology of chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) and its close association with other airway pathologies, especially asthma, helps to comprehend the concept of the united airway and the importance of a multidisciplinary approach and the actual roll of biologic therapy.

Areas Covered: This expert review is the synthesis of a working group on the current state of the art of the evaluation and management of CRSwNP. A thorough analysis of the literature has been conducted for the latest studies and results, specially the European (EPOS 2020) and American (ICAR-RS 2021) guidelines.

Article Synopsis
  • The study highlights the variability in effectiveness among antihypertensive drugs, indicating that not all medications are equally capable of achieving target blood pressure levels.
  • The ATOM study's findings were used to create two tables that outline expected blood pressure reductions for various drugs and combinations, aiding clinicians in treatment decisions.
  • Recommendations for antihypertensive therapy should focus on the specific effects of individual drugs and combinations, rather than just their pharmacological classes.

Introduction: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a neglected parasitic disease with a high fatality rate if left untreated. Endemic in Morocco, as well as in other countries in the Mediterranean basin, VL mainly affects children living in rural areas. In Morocco, the direct observation of parasites in bone marrow (BM) aspirates is used to diagnose VL and meglumine antimoniate (SB) is the first line of treatment.

Carotenoids and chlorophylls are photosynthetic pigments synthesized in plastids from metabolic precursors provided by the methylerythritol 4-phosphate (MEP) pathway. The first two steps in the MEP pathway are catalyzed by the deoxyxylulose 5-phosphate synthase (DXS) and reductoisomerase (DXR) enzymes. While DXS has been recently shown to be the main flux-controlling step of the MEP pathway, both DXS and DXR enzymes have been proven to be able to promote an increase in MEP-derived products when overproduced in diverse plant systems.

[Congenital solid tumors. A thirteen-year review].

Cir Pediatr

July 2004

Servicio de Cirugía Pediátrica, Unitat Integrada Hospital Sant Joan de Déu-H. Clínic, Universitat de Barcelon, Barcelona.

Unlabelled: Tumors diagnosed during the first month of life are infrequent: 0.5 to 2% of all childhood neoplasms. This is an interesting group of tumors because their type, relative incidence, natural history and response to treatment differ from those seen in older children.
