[Public mental health and patient autonomy-an area of conflict?].

Bundesgesundheitsblatt Gesundheitsforschung Gesundheitsschutz

April 2023

kbo-Isar-Amper-Klinikum Region München, Haar bei München, Deutschland.

Public mental health (PMH) interventions aim to promote and improve the well-being of members of a society. PMH is based on a normative understanding of what well-being is and what factors contribute to it. Without necessarily disclosing it, measures of a PMH program may affect the autonomy of individuals if their personal perceptions regarding their own individual well-being differ from PMH's prescriptions for well-being oriented toward societal goals.

Article Synopsis
  • This research presents a technique using parahydrogen-induced polarization (PHIP) to enhance the observation of carbon-labeled metabolites through magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for real-time monitoring inside the body.
  • The method involves transferring parahydrogen-derived singlet order into carbon magnetization using adiabatic radio frequency sweeps at very low magnetic fields, resulting in substantial increases in nuclear spin polarization, sometimes exceeding 60%.
  • Additionally, a new approach involving site-selective deuteration is introduced to improve the efficiency of polarization transfer by integrating deuterium into the molecular structure, minimizing relaxation effects from closely coupled nuclei.

Purpose: Besides the quality of life, patients' return to work is one of the most important treatment results of medical rehabilitation paid by the German Pension Insurance. In order to be able to use the return to work as a quality indicator for medical rehabilitation, a risk adjustment strategy for pre-existing characteristics of patients, rehabilitation departments and labour markets had to be developed.

Methods: Multiple regression analyses and cross validation were used to develop a risk adjustment strategy, which mathematically compensates the influence of confounders and thus allows for appropriate comparisons between rehabilitation departments regarding patients' return to work after medical rehabilitation.

Asymptotic State Transformations of Continuous Variable Resources.

Commun Math Phys

December 2022

Institut für Theoretische Physik und IQST, Universität Ulm, Albert-Einstein-Allee 11, 89069 Ulm, Germany.

We study asymptotic state transformations in continuous variable quantum resource theories. In particular, we prove that monotones displaying lower semicontinuity and strong superadditivity can be used to bound asymptotic transformation rates in these settings. This removes the need for asymptotic continuity, which cannot be defined in the traditional sense for infinite-dimensional systems.

Quantitative FIB/SEM tomogram analysis of closed and open porosity of spheroidized graphite anode materials for LiBs applications.

Micron

March 2023

Central Facility for Electron Microscopy, Electron Microscopy Group of Materials Science, Albert-Einstein-Allee 11, Universität Ulm, 89081 Ulm, Germany. Electronic address:

The electrochemical behaviour of rounded graphite particles as anode material in a lithium-ion battery strongly depends on the particle properties. The spheroidization process directly affects these properties, including the open porosity that determines the extent of direct contact between liquid electrolyte and carbon surface. Therefore, the quantification of the proportion between open and closed pores is of great interest.

Spin-Dependent Momentum Conservation of Electron-Phonon Scattering in Chirality-Induced Spin Selectivity.

J Phys Chem Lett

January 2023

Institut für Theoretische Physik und IQST, Universität Ulm, Albert-Einstein-Allee 11, D-89081Ulm, Germany.

The elucidation of the mechanisms underpinning chirality-induced spin selectivity remains an outstanding scientific challenge. Here we consider the role of delocalized phonon modes in electron transport in chiral structures and demonstrate that spin selectivity can originate from spin-dependent energy and momentum conservation in electron-phonon scattering events. While this mechanism is robust to the specific nature of the vibrational modes, the degree of spin polarization depends on environmental factors, such as the specific temperature and phonon relaxation rates, as well as the presence of external driving fields.

Macrophagic AMPKα1 orchestrates regenerative inflammation induced by glucocorticoids.

EMBO Rep

February 2023

Institut NeuroMyoGène, Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1, CNRS UMR 5310, INSERM U1217, Université de Lyon, Lyon, France.

Macrophages are key cells after tissue damage since they mediate both acute inflammatory phase and regenerative inflammation by shifting from pro-inflammatory to restorative cells. Glucocorticoids (GCs) are the most potent anti-inflammatory hormone in clinical use, still their actions on macrophages are not fully understood. We show that the metabolic sensor AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is required for GCs to induce restorative macrophages.

Deep-Learning Pipeline for Statistical Quantification of Amorphous Two-Dimensional Materials.

ACS Nano

December 2022

Faculty of Chemistry and Food Chemistry & Center for Advancing Electronics Dresden (cfaed), Technische Universität Dresden, 01062Dresden, Germany.

Aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy enables imaging of two-dimensional (2D) materials with atomic resolution. However, dissecting the short-range-ordered structures in radiation-sensitive and amorphous 2D materials remains a significant challenge due to low atomic contrast and laborious manual evaluation. Here, we imaged carbon-based 2D materials with strong contrast, which is enabled by chromatic and spherical aberration correction at a low acceleration voltage.
