J Gerontol A Biol Sci Med Sci

December 2024

Human Nutrition & Exercise Research Centre, Centre for Healthier Lives, Population Health Sciences Institute, Newcastle University, Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK.

Biomarkers of ageing serve as important outcome measures in longevity-promoting interventions. However, there is limited consensus on which specific biomarkers are most appropriate for human intervention studies. This work aimed to address this need by establishing an expert consensus on biomarkers of ageing for use in intervention studies via the Delphi method.

Background: Compassion fatigue is a significant issue in nursing, affecting both registered nurses and nursing students, potentially leading to burnout and reduced quality of care. During internships, compassion fatigue can shape nursing students' career trajectories and intent to stay in the profession. Identifying those at high risk is crucial for timely interventions, yet existing tools often fail to account for within-group variability, limiting their ability to accurately predict compassion fatigue risk.

PPARβ/δ upregulates the insulin receptor β subunit in skeletal muscle by reducing lysosomal activity and EphB4 levels.

Cell Commun Signal

December 2024

Department of Pharmacology, Toxicology and Therapeutic Chemistry, Faculty of Pharmacy and Food Sciences, Institute of Biomedicine of the University of Barcelona (IBUB), University of Barcelona, Barcelona, 08028, Spain.

Background: The increased degradation of the insulin receptor β subunit (InsRβ) in lysosomes contributes to the development of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress contributes to insulin resistance through several mechanisms, including the reduction of InsRβ levels. Here, we examined how peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)β/δ regulates InsRβ levels in mouse skeletal muscle and C2C12 myotubes exposed to the ER stressor tunicamycin.

Cardiovasc Diabetol

December 2024

Department of Nutrition, Diabetes and Metabolism, School of Medicine, Pontificia Universidad Católica of Chile, Diagonal Paraguay #362, Santiago, Chile.

Background: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) has become a worldwide pandemic. While ceramides may serve as intermediary between obesity-related lipotoxicity and T2D, the relationship with simple glycosphingolipids remains uncertain. The aim of this study was to characterize the associations between blood glycosphingolipid and ceramide species with T2D and to identify a circulating sphingolipid profile that could serve as novel biomarker for T2D risk.

The reliable detection of ammonia at room temperature is crucial for not only maintaining environmental safety but also for reducing the risks of hazardous pollutants. In this study, the electrochemical modification of laser-induced graphene (LIG) with polyaniline (PANI) led to the development of a chemo-resistive nanocomposite (PANI@LIG) for detecting ammonia levels at room temperature. The composite is characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transforms infrared, and Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

: The scientific literature has provided evidence on the negative health effects experienced by those who suffer gender-based violence (GBV) and isolating gender violence (IGV), the latter being a form of retaliation against those who support GBV victims. However, less attention has been paid to the potential health improvements following the initial support received by victims. : This study examines the positive health outcomes among survivors of GBV and IGV after they engaged with the "MeToo route," an initiative of the MeToo movement aimed at raising awareness about gender violence and fostering solidarity through support networks that traveled through 13 Spanish universities through more than 20 events in September 2022.

A common hallmark of neurodegenerative diseases is the accumulation of polypeptide aggregates in neurons. Despite the primary cause of these diseases being inherently genetic, their development can be delayed with proper preventive treatments. Long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω-3 LCPUFA) are promising bioactive nutrients that are beneficial for brain health.

Single-Carbon Insertion into Single C-C Bonds with Diazirines.

J Am Chem Soc

December 2024

Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ-CERCA), The Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology, Països Catalans 16, 43007 Tarragona, Spain.

A novel platform for the skeletal editing of single C-C bonds via a single-carbon insertion has been developed using diazirines. This strategy involves the photogeneration of arylchlorocarbenes as carbynoid species that undergo site-selective carbene insertion into tertiary C-H bonds and a subsequent Wagner-Meerwein rearrangement promoted by a silver salt. Our skeletal editing strategy based on a formal selective carbyne C-C bond insertion has been demonstrated in six core-to-core conversions, including linear and cyclic benzylic substrates, alkanes and late-stage functionalizations.

Universitat Rovira i Virgili, Grup de Biotecnologia Enològica, Departament de Bioquímica i Biotecnologia, Facultat d'Enologia, C/ Marcel·lí Domingo 1, 43007 Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain. Electronic address:

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB), principally Oenococcus oeni, play crucial roles in wine production, contributing to the transformation of L-malic acid into L-lactic acid during malolactic fermentation (MLF). This fermentation is influenced by different factors, including the initial LAB population and wine stress factors, such as nutrient availability. Yeast mannoproteins can enhance LAB survival in wine.

We derive the algorithms for the dynamics of the standard dissipative particle dynamics model (DPD) for a velocity-dependent friction coefficient. By introducing simple estimators of the local rate of strain we propose an interparticle friction coefficient that decreases for high deformation rates, eventually leading to the macroscopic shear-thinning behaviour. We have derived the appropriate fluctuation-dissipation theorems that include the correction of the spurious behaviour due to the coupling of the non-linear friction and the fluctuations.

December 2024

Institution Instituto Universitario de Tecnología Química (CSIC-UPV), Universitat Politècnica de València, Avda. De los Naranjos s/n, Valencia, 46022, Spain.

Ligand protected gold nanoclusters have been proposed for electrochemical CO reduction (eCOR) as an alternative to polycrystalline catalysts, showing higher selectivity control due to the tailored composition and precise microenvironment. Here, two gold cluster families are studied with different staple motifs (Au(SR) and Au(SR), where SR = thiolate) doped with Ag or Cu to understand the interplay between the composition and the performance of these catalysts. Detailed cluster characterization and Density Functional Theory simulations demonstrate that the dynamic aspects involving ligand removal are crucial to unraveling the role of the dopant, the cluster curvature, and the staple structure.
