Background: Gait is the manner or style of walking, involving motor control and coordination to adapt to the surrounding environment. Knowing the kinesthetic markers of normal gait is essential for the diagnosis of certain pathologies or the generation of intelligent ortho-prostheses for the treatment or prevention of gait disorders. The aim of the present study was to identify the key features of normal human gait using inertial unit (IMU) recordings in a walking test.

A two-patch logistic metapopulation model is investigated both analytically and numerically focusing on the impact of dispersal on population dynamics. First, the dependence of the global dynamics on the stability type of the full extinction equilibrium point is tackled. Then, the behaviour of the total population with respect to the dispersal is studied analytically.

Presently, Electric Vehicle batteries are considered to have reached the End of Life once their State of Health falls to 70-80%. However, this criteria is universal to all battery capacities and not based on the specific application requirements. To evaluate whether the End of Life can be extended below the current threshold, the impact of the Internal Resistance increase needs to be addressed.

Recent developments in SbSe van der Waals material as an absorber candidate for thin film photovoltaic applications have demonstrated the importance of surface management for improving the conversion efficiency of this technology. SbSe thin films' versatility in delivering good efficiencies in both superstrate and substrate configurations, coupled with a compatibility with various low-temperature deposition techniques (below 500 °C and often below 350 °C), makes them highly attractive for advanced photovoltaic applications. This study presents a comparative analysis of the most effective chemical etchings developed for related thin film chalcogenide technologies to identify and understand the most appropriate surface chemical treatments for SbSe in substrate configuration, synthesized using a sequential process at very low temperatures (320 °C).

This paper presents a proposal for riparian area delineation relying on topographical, hydrological, vegetation, and soil data together with numerical modelling of the river hydrodynamics. The two-dimensional model Iber is used to simulate 2.5, 10, 50, and 100-years return period flood events, and new code is developed to simulate the main hydrological processes of the river-riparian system to generate riparian zone maps.

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death and current treatments such as stents still suffer from disadvantages. Balloon expansion causes damage to the arterial wall and limited and delayed endothelialization gives rise to restenosis and thrombosis. New more performing materials that circumvent these disadvantages are required to improve the success rate of interventions.

Up to now, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with open nanostructures have shown outstanding capabilities in trapping smoke particles compared to the original MOFs. However, only a few MOF-based strategies have been reported to synthesize hierarchical porous cages thus far, which are mainly restricted to environmentally unfriendly wet-chemical liquid methods. Herein, as a proof-of-concept, a gas-steamed metal-organic framework approach was designed to fabricate a series of cheeselike open cages with hierarchical porosity.

Machine Learning is entering a phase of maturity, but its medical applications still lag behind in terms of practical use. The field of oncological radiology (and neuro-oncology in particular) is at the forefront of these developments, now boosted by the success of Deep-Learning methods for the analysis of medical images. This paper reviews in detail some of the most recent advances in the use of Deep Learning in this field, from the broader topic of the development of Machine-Learning-based analytical pipelines to specific instantiations of the use of Deep Learning in neuro-oncology; the latter including its use in the groundbreaking field of ultra-low field magnetic resonance imaging.

Hydroxyapatite-based materials have been widely used in countless applications, such as bone regeneration, catalysis, air and water purification or protein separation. Recently, much interest has been given to controlling the aspect ratio of hydroxyapatite crystals from bulk samples. The ability to exert control over the aspect ratio may revolutionize the applications of these materials towards new functional materials.

Introduction: Malaria is one of the most prevalent infectious diseases in sub-Saharan Africa, with 247 million cases reported worldwide in 2021 according to the World Health Organization. Optical microscopy remains the gold standard technique for malaria diagnosis, however, it requires expertise, is time-consuming and difficult to reproduce. Therefore, new diagnostic techniques based on digital image analysis using artificial intelligence tools can improve diagnosis and help automate it.

Video game trailers are very useful tools for attracting potential players. This research focuses on analyzing the emotions that arise while viewing video game trailers and the link between these emotions and storytelling and visual attention. The methodology consisted of a three-step task test with potential users: the first step was to identify the perception of indie games; the second step was to use the eyetracking device (gaze plot, heat map, and fixation points) and link them to fixation points (attention), viewing patterns, and non-visible areas; the third step was to interview users to understand impressions and questionnaires of emotions related to the trailer's storytelling and expectations.

Sustainable exploitation of groundwater resources for drinking water provision in rural communities in sub-Sahara Africa remains elusive due to the limited knowledge of these hydrogeological systems. This is exacerbated by poor maintenance of existing infrastructure, limited technical capacity, the socio-economic characteristics of the area and poor governance. Assessing the likelihood of a given individual user experiencing water shortage calls for an interdisciplinary approach.

The goal of this study is to provide a benchmark for the use of Monte Carlo simulation when applied to coincidence summing corrections. The examples are based on simple geometries: two types of germanium detectors and four kinds of sources, to mimic eight typical measurement conditions. The coincidence corrective factors are computed for four radionuclides.

Van der Waals chalcogenides and chalcohalides have the potential to become the next thin film PV breakthrough, owing to the earth-abundancy and non-toxicity of their components, and their stability, high absorption coefficient and quasi-1D structure, which leads to enhanced electrical anisotropic properties when the material is oriented in a specific crystalline direction. However, quasi-1D semiconductors beyond Sb(S,Se), such as SbSeX chalcohalides, have been scarcely investigated for energy generation applications, and rarely synthesised by physical vapor deposition methodologies, despite holding the promise of widening the bandgap range (opening the door to tandem or semi-transparent devices), and showing enticing new properties such as ferroelectric behaviour and defect-tolerant nature. In this work, SbSeI and SbSeBr micro-columnar solar cells have been obtained for the first time by an innovative methodology based on the selective halogenation of SbSe thin films at pressure above 1 atm.

Lateral modes are responsible for the in-band spurious resonances that appear on BAW resonators, degrading the in-band filter response. In this work, a fast computational method based on the transmission line matrix (TLM) method is employed to model the lateral resonances of BAW resonators. Using the precomputed dispersion curves of Lamb waves and an equivalent characteristic impedance for the TE mode, a network of transmission lines is used to calculate the magnitude of field distributions on the electrodes.

The reduction of nitric oxide (NO) emissions to atmosphere has been recently addressed using biological technologies. However, NO removal through bioprocesses is quite challenging due to the low solubility of NO in water. Therefore, the abatement of NO emissions might be improved by adding a chelating agent or a mass transfer vector (MTV) to increase the solubility of this pollutant into the aqueous phase where the bioprocess takes place.

As cells migrate and experience forces from their surroundings, they constantly undergo mechanical deformations which reshape their plasma membrane (PM). To maintain homeostasis, cells need to detect and restore such changes, not only in terms of overall PM area and tension as previously described, but also in terms of local, nanoscale topography. Here, we describe a novel phenomenon, by which cells sense and restore mechanically induced PM nanoscale deformations.
