Using mathematical models of physiological systems in medicine has allowed for the development of diagnostic, treatment, and medical educational tools. However, their complexity restricts, in most cases, their application for predictive, preventive, and personalized purposes. Although there are strategies that reduce the complexity of applying models based on fitting techniques, most of them are focused on a single instant of time, neglecting the effect of the system's temporal evolution.

Repaired Tetralogy of Fallot (rTOF) patients suffer from pulmonary regurgitation and may require pulmonary valve replacement (PVR). Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (cMRI) guides therapy, but conventional measurements do not quantify the intracardiac flow effects from pulmonary regurgitation or PVR. This study investigates intracardiac flow parameters of the right ventricle (RV) of rTOF by computational fluid dynamics (CFD).

Synchrotron-radiation-based techniques are a powerful tool for the investigation of materials. In particular, the availability of highly brilliant sources has opened the possibility to develop techniques sensitive to dynamics at the atomic scale such as X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS). XPCS is particularly relevant in the study of glasses, which have been often investigated at the macroscopic scale by, for example, differential scanning calorimetry.

Semi-recumbent cycling performed from a wheelchair is a popular rehabilitation exercise following spinal cord injury (SCI) and is often paired with functional electrical stimulation. However, biomechanical assessment of this cycling modality is lacking, even in unimpaired populations, hindering the development of personalised and safe rehabilitation programs for those with SCI. This study developed a computational pipeline to determine lower limb kinematics, kinetics, and joint contact forces (JCF) in 11 unimpaired participants during voluntary semi-recumbent cycling using a rehabilitation ergometer.

Cyclomatrix polyphosphazenes have attracted widespread attention in the field of polymer flame retardancy. Nevertheless, the optimal manifestation of their distinctive structural attributes and flame-retardant properties necessitates a judicious selection of condensation monomers and synergistic templates during the fabrication of polyphosphazene flame retardants. In our previous studies, it was discovered that when ZIF-67 is functionalized with polyphosphazene, the by-product HCl from phosphazene polycondensation causes etching on ZIF-67.

Comparative bioavailability studies often involve multiple groups of subjects for a variety of reasons, such as clinical capacity limitations. This raises questions about the validity of pooling data from these groups in the statistical analysis and whether a group-by-treatment interaction should be evaluated. We investigated the presence or absence of group-by-treatment interactions through both simulation techniques and a meta-study of well-controlled trials.

This study presents the synthesis and characterization of two fluorescent norbornadiene (NBD) photoswitches, each incorporating two conjugated pyrene units. Expanding on the limited repertoire of reported photoswitchable fluorescent NBDs, we explore their properties with a focus on applications in bioimaging of amyloid beta (Aβ) plaques. While the fluorescence emission of the NBD decreases upon photoisomerization, aligning with what has been previously reported, for the first time we observed luminescence after irradiation of the quadricyclane (QC) isomer.

In accordance with the Circular Economy Package of the European directive, the Spanish government compels manufacturers of plastic bags to include into their products a minimum of 70% of polyethylene (PE) waste. Following this mandate can be challenging and requires a deep knowledge of the alterations produced by the recycling in the main components of a plastic bag film: lineal low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), the LLDPE recycled post-industry, generated as waste from an industrial process (rLLDPE) and the PE recycled from post-consumer use (rPE), that has been picked up, cleaned, and reprocessed. This study provides insight in the macro and microstructural changes produced by several cycles of recycling in these materials.

Developing reliable methodologies to decode brain state information from electroencephalogram (EEG) signals is an open challenge, crucial to implementing EEG-based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). For example, signal processing methods that identify brain states could allow motor-impaired patients to communicate via non-invasive, EEG-based BCIs. In this work, we focus on the problem of distinguishing between the states of eyes closed (EC) and eyes open (EO), employing quantities based on permutation entropy (PE).

Mathematical modeling of neuronal dynamics has experienced a fast growth in the last decades thanks to the biophysical formalism introduced by Hodgkin and Huxley in the 1950s. Other types of models (for instance, integrate and fire models), although less realistic, have also contributed to understand neuronal dynamics. However, there is still a vast volume of data that have not been associated with a mathematical model, mainly because data are acquired more rapidly than they can be analyzed or because it is difficult to analyze (for instance, if the number of ionic channels involved is huge).

Dynamical tuning of the thermal conductivity in crystals, , is critical for thermal management applications, as well as for energy harvesting and the development of novel devices able to perform logic operations with phonons. Such a desired control can be achieved in functional materials that experience large structural and phonon variations as a result of field-induced phase transformations. However, this approach is only practical within reduced temperature intervals containing zero-bias phase transition points, since otherwise the necessary driving fields become excessively large and the materials' performances are detrimentally affected.
