Multiband (MB) optical transmission targets increasing the capacity of operators' optical transport networks. However, nonlinear impairments (NLI) affect each optical channel in the C+L+S bands differently, and, therefore, the routing and spectrum assignment (RSA) problem needs to be complemented with fast and accurate tools to consider the quality of transmission (QoT) within the provisioning process. This paper proposes a digital twin-assisted approach for lightpath provisioning to provide a complete solution for the RSA problem that ensures the required QoT in MB optical networks.

Advanced receptor models can leverage the information derived from optical and chemical variables as input by a variety of instruments at different time resolutions to extract the source specific absorption Ångström exponent (AAE) from aerosol absorption. The multilinear engine (ME-2), a Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) solver, serves as a proficient tool for performing such analyses, thereby overcoming the constraints imposed by the assumptions in current optical source apportionment methods such as the Aethalometer approach since the use of a-priori AAE values introduces additional uncertainty into the results of optical methods. Comprehensive PM chemical speciation datasets, and aerosol absorption coefficients (b, λ) at seven wavelengths measured by an Aethalometer (AE33), were used in multi-time source apportionment (MT-PMF).

Brine mining can represent a valuable non-conventional resource for the extraction of Mg, Li, B, Sr and other Trace Elements (TEs) such as Rb, Cs, whose recoveries require chemical reagents such as alkaline and acidic solutions. In a circular strategy, these required chemicals can be produced in-situ through Electrodialysis with Bipolar Membranes (EDBM). In this work, a laboratory EDBM unit was operated using real brines from Trapani saltworks to investigate, for the first time, the migration of minor and trace ions, as Li, B, Sr, Cs and Rb through ion-exchange membranes (IEMs).

This paper presents a new approach to measuring eyelid movement using millimeter wave (mmW) radar technology. A two-step method is proposed, involving the observation of a small resolution cell corresponding to the monitored eye and the evaluation of the phase evolution over the measurement period. Simulations are conducted to support radar system optimization and data interpretation with a focus on detecting eyelid movement patterns and compensating for interference from other parts of the body.

Methods: We conducted a population-based cohort study using primary care records. Individuals were followed 3 months before the start of the vaccination campaign in Spain and 3 months after.

There is a body of evidence that ultrafine particles (UFP, those with diameters ≤ 100 nm) might have significant impacts on health. Accordingly, identifying sources of UFP is essential to develop abatement policies. The use of a video method based on the Digital Image Correlation (DIC) algorithm from experimental mechanics to estimate the displacements, strain field, and sarcolemma length in a beating single-cell cardiomyocyte is proposed in this work. The obtained deformation is then correlated with the calcium signal, from calcium imaging where fluorescent dyes sensitive to calcium Ca are used. Our proposed video-based method for simultaneous contraction and intracellular calcium analysis results in a low-cost, non-invasive, and label-free method.

This work focuses on the photocatalytic production of hydrogen from the photodehydrogenation of ethanol using several gold(I) complexes and gold(0) systems over titanium dioxide (P90 TiO) as hybrid photocatalysts. The photocatalytic systems are composed of at least one coumarin-based ligand, which can enhance the photocatalytic activity by its photon-absorbing capacity due to its chromophore properties. The photocatalytic behavior for hydrogen generation of the studied samples is compared under UV-vis light setting the total gold-based co-catalyst loading at 1 wt% onto the TiO photocatalysts and when the gold content is maintained at 0.

Cell shape and function are intimately linked, in a way that is mediated by the forces exerted between cells and their environment. The relationship between cell shape and forces has been extensively studied for cells seeded on flat 2D substrates, but not for cells in more physiological 3D settings. Here, a technique called 3D micropatterned traction force microscopy (3D-µTFM) to confine cells in 3D wells of defined shape, while simultaneously measuring the forces transmitted between cells and their microenvironment is demonstrated.

Submarine Groundwater Discharge (SGD) is a major pathway for the discharge of fresh and saline groundwater and associated dissolved compounds into marine environments. However, assessing SGD processes in coastal aquifers is challenging due to inaccessibility, dynamic conditions, complex subsurface geology, and the need for long-term monitoring to capture temporal and spatial variations in SGD rates accurately. This study employs marine continuous resistivity profiling (MCRP) as a main method to assess the presence of freshwater or brackish SGD offshore and to examine its potential seasonal variations.

Cholesterol is a fundamental lipid prevalent in eukaryotic cell membranes and circulating in the bloodstream bound to lipoproteins. This study addresses the potential of sourcing Critical Raw Materials (CRMs) using Acidic Mine Waters (AMWs) as a secondary resource. AMWs, often viewed as waste, contain valuable metals like zinc and copper, as well as critical metals like magnesium and cobalt. Moreover, recent studies also reported the presence of Rare Earth Elements (REEs) at concentrations (mg/L) that make their extraction both technically and economically viable.
