Fiber is essential for rumen health, microbial fermentation, and the energy supply of herbivores. Even though the study of fecal fiber contents (neutral detergent fiber NDF, acid detergent fiber ADF, and acid detergent lignin ADL) using near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) has allowed investigating nutritional ecology of different herbivore species, NIRS calibrations are species-specific and require a large number of samples for predictions. A multispecies calibration would be an advantage since samples from different herbivores could be used to calibrate a model capable of predicting the fecal fiber content of other herbivores.

Herein, we report how merging and clipping nets in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can be controlled in a single-crystal-to-single-crystal fashion using three different approaches─the merged net, clip-off chemistry, and linker reinstallation─to design and synthesize three- and two-merged net MOFs. Initially, we show the formation of three isoreticular three-merged net MOFs by linking a trimeric Sc cluster, Sc(μ-Ο)(-COO), with ditopic zigzag and tritopic linkers. Photophysical and photochemical studies were carried out to examine the photoreactivity of etheno adducts, 1,N-ethenoadenine (εdA) and 1,N-ethenoguanine (εdG), in the presence of two well-known photosensitizers acting by Type I and/or Type II mechanisms such as 4-carboxybenzophenone (CBP) and rose Bengal (RB), respectively. Steady-state photolysis experiments combined with HPLC and mass spectroscopy measurements lead to photoproducts that correspond to the repaired nucleosides. To determine the mechanism of this photooxidation processes, phosphorescence spectroscopy, direct detection of singlet oxygen luminescence and laser flash photolysis were carried out.

The synthesis of alkyl halides can be performed by simply halide exchange reactions between two different alkyl halides, catalyzed by aluminosilicates. Here, we show that commercially available alumina shows a superior catalytic activity for the halogen exchange reaction between long alkyl halides (more than 6 carbons), including fluorides, in either batch or flow modes. The catalytic activity of the solid alumina is modulated by alkaline countercations on the surface, and sodium-supported alumina shows the optimal performance for the iodo-bromo and iodo-fluoro exchange under inflow reaction conditions, after >24 h reaction time, without any external additive.
