The plastic waste crisis is among humanity's most urgent challenges. However, widespread adoption of sustainable plastics is hindered by their often inadequate processing characteristics and performance. Here, we introduce a bio-inspired strategy for the modification of a representative high molar mass, biodegradable aliphatic polyester that helps overcome these limitations and remains effective at molar masses far greater than the entanglement molar mass.

Cyanobacterial wastewater-based biorefineries are a sustainable alternative to obtain high-value products with reduced costs. This study aimed to obtain phycobiliproteins and carotenoids, along with biogas from a wastewater-borne cyanobacterium grown in secondary effluent from an urban wastewater treatment plant, namely treated wastewater. For the first time, the presence of contaminants of emerging concern in concentrated pigment extracts was assessed.

Cell migration regulates central life processes including embryonic development, tissue regeneration, and tumor invasion. To establish the direction of migration, cells follow exogenous cues. Durotaxis, the directed cell migration towards elastic stiffness gradients, is the classical example of mechanical taxis.

Intrinsically colored cotton is crucial for sustainability as it eliminates the need for chemical dyes, reducing water pollution and carbon footprint. It also preserves biodiversity by using fewer pesticides and supports eco-friendly, ethical product creation. This research aims to examine the factors that influence the color change that occurs in naturally colored organic cotton (NaCOC) fabrics when washed under normal household conditions, and it focuses on special detergents designed for people with skin hypersensitivity.

This study investigates whether a diffractive presbyopia-correcting multifocal intraocular lens disrupts the favorable interaction between chromatic and monochromatic aberrations in the eye. This is analyzed not only for distant objects but also for closer viewing distances, where the lens utilizes different diffraction orders depending on its design. We consider diffractive designs based on the zero-diffraction order for far vision and the first diffraction order for near vision (i.

Introduction: The retention in care of patients undergoing antiretroviral therapy (ART) is a cornerstone for preventing AIDS-associated morbidity and mortality, as well as further transmission of HIV. Adherence to ART poses particular challenges in conflict-affected settings like the Central African Republic (CAR). The study objective was to estimate the rate of lost-to-follow-up (LTFU) and determine factors associated with LTFU among patients living with HIV under ART in CAR.

Acting in the natural world requires not only deciding among multiple options but also converting decisions into motor commands. How the dynamics of decision formation influence the fine kinematics of response movement remains, however, poorly understood. Here we investigate how the accumulation of decision evidence shapes the response orienting trajectories in a task where freely-moving rats combine prior expectations and auditory information to select between two possible options.

Four formulations were developed and characterized in terms of moisture content, water activity, color, texture, microbial count, and nutritional profile. Finally, the sensory profile was determined using the flash profile method, and the developed product was compared to a commercial product.

Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD), Cataract, Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) and Glaucoma are the four most common ocular conditions that affect a person's vision. Early detection in the asymptomatic stages can alleviate vision loss or slow down the progression of these diseases. However, manual diagnosis is a costly and tedious process, especially in mass screening applications.

The impact of cognitive biases on decision-making in the digital world remains under-explored despite its well-documented effects in physical contexts. This paper addresses this gap by investigating the attractiveness halo effect using AI-based beauty filters. We conduct a large-scale online user study involving 2748 participants who rated facial images from a diverse set of 462 distinct individuals in two conditions: original and attractive after applying a beauty filter.

Background: Shorter telomeres are associated with increased risk of cognitive decline and age-related diseases. Developing interventions to promote healthy aging by preserving telomere integrity is of paramount importance. Here, we investigated the effect of an 18-month meditation intervention on telomere length (TL) measures in older people without cognitive impairment.

The mechanics of the extracellular matrix (ECM) determine cell activity and fate through mechanoresponsive proteins including Yes-associated protein 1 (YAP). Rigidity and viscous relaxation have emerged as the main mechanical properties of the ECM steering cell behavior. However, how cells integrate coexisting ECM rigidity and viscosity cues remains poorly understood, particularly in the high-stiffness regime.

We study the enhancement of the elastocaloric effect in natural rubber by using forced air convection to favour heat extraction during the elongation stage of a stretching-unstretching cycle. Elastocaloric performance is quantified by means of the adiabatic undercooling that occurs after fast removal of the stress, measured by infrared thermography. To ensure accuracy, spatial averaging on thermal maps of the sample surface is performed since undercooled samples display heterogeneities caused by various factors.

Bacteriophages have gained significant interest as a potential solution to combat harmful bacteria, especially in the fight against antimicrobial resistance. With the rise in drug-resistant microorganisms, the medical community is increasingly exploring new alternatives to traditional antibiotics, and bacteriophages offer several advantages in this regard. However, phage applications still face some challenges, such as host specificity.

Researchers often use outcome-dependent sampling to study the exposure-outcome association. The case-control study is a widely used example of outcome-dependent sampling when the outcome is binary. When the outcome is ordinal, standard ordinal regression models generally produce biased coefficients when the sampling fractions depend on the values of the outcome variable.

A comparative study of the structural integrity of an opaque recycled poly(ethylene terephthalate) (rPET-O) has been carried out with two types of modified rPET-O by applying reactive extrusion techniques, namely (a) using a multi-epoxide reactive agent (REx-rPET-O) and (b) a 90/10 (wt/wt) rPET-O/polycarbonate (PC) blend. The chemical modifications introduced during reactive extrusion were confirmed using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and rheological dynamic analysis (RDA). For the quantification of the fracture parameters, an instrumented pendulum impact testing machine was used using specimens in SENB configuration.

Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) generate a substantial amount of sludge as a residue of the wastewater treatment process. The management of this sludge requires the adoption of cost-effective and environmentally friendly techniques. Sludge Treatment Wetlands (STW) have emerged as an effective means to manage and treat sludge, resulting in the production of biosolids suitable for agricultural purposes.

The need for eco-friendly cooling materials and material recycling are two urgent challenges to address. In this paper, the role of the ground tyre rubber treatment (cryo-grinding and devulcanization) is investigated on the tensile and elastocaloric properties of Natural rubber (NR)/ ground tyre rubber (GTR). The GTR particles that are sieved (<63µm) and devulcanized by microwave irradiation (1 min at 800Watts) exhibit a low network chain density (0.
