High-frequency vibrations in the ultrasonic range influence the plasticity of metals during metal forming: there is stress and force reduction during ultrasonic treatment compared to metal forming without ultrasound. Different reasons for this behavior are discussed: a combination of stress superposition, energy absorption in dislocations, temperature increase, and frictional changes. This investigation shows the influence of partially superimposed ultrasonic vibrations with amplitudes in the range of ∼ 1.

Postural deficits such as hyperlordosis (hollow back) or hyperkyphosis (hunchback) are relevant health issues. Diagnoses depend on the experience of the examiner and are, therefore, often subjective and prone to errors. Machine learning (ML) methods in combination with explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) tools have proven useful for providing an objective, data-based orientation.

Despite recent advances in exfoliated vdW ferromagnets, the widespread application of 2D magnetism requires a Curie temperature (T) above room temperature as well as a stable and controllable magnetic anisotropy. Here we demonstrate a large-scale iron-based vdW material FeGeTe with the T reaching ~530 K. We confirmed the high-temperature ferromagnetism by multiple characterizations.

Useful dynamical processes often begin through barrier-crossing dynamical transitions; engineering system dynamics in order to make such transitions reliable is therefore an important task for biological or artificial microscopic machinery. Here, we first show by example that adding even a small amount of back-reaction to a control parameter, so that it responds to the system's evolution, can significantly increase the fraction of trajectories that cross a separatrix. We then explain how a post-adiabatic theorem due to Neishtadt can quantitatively describe this kind of enhancement without having to solve the equations of motion, allowing systematic understanding and design of a class of self-controlling dynamical systems.

Whole-Body Electromyostimulation (WB-EMS) is a training technology that enables simultaneous stimulation of all the main muscle groups with a specific impulse intensity for each electrode. The corresponding time-efficiency and joint-friendliness of WB-EMS may be particularly attractive for people unable or unmotivated to conduct (intense) conventional training protocols. However, due to the enormous metabolic and musculoskeletal impact of WB-EMS, particular attention must be paid to the application of this technology.

Poor posture is a well-known problem in all age groups and can lead to back pain, which in turn can result in high socio-economic costs. Regular assessment of posture can therefore help to identify postural deficits at an early stage in order to take preventive measures and can therefore be an important tool for promoting public health. We measured the posture of 1127 symptom-free subjects aged 10 to 69 years using stereophotogrammetry and determined the sagittal posture parameters (FC), (FL), and kyphosis index (KI) as well as the values standardized to the trunk height (FC%, FL%, KI%).

Algal blooms in lakes are a major hazard worldwide. Although various geographical and environmental patterns affect algal communities during river-lake transit, a thorough understanding of what patterns shape the algal communities is still rarely researched, particularly in complex interconnected river-lake systems. In this study, focusing on the most typical interconnected river-lake system in China, the Dongting Lake, we collected paired water and sediment samples in summer, when algal biomass and growth rate are at high levels.

Different amphiphilic co-polymers have been introduced to produce polymer-lipid particles with nanodisc structure composed of an inner lipid bilayer and polymer chains self-assembled as an outer belt. These particles can be used to stabilize membrane proteins in solution and enable their characterization by means of biophysical methods, including small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Some of these co-polymers have also been used to directly extract membrane proteins together with their associated lipids from native membranes.

There is still little empirical knowledge about the impact of the Covid 19 pandemic on the casework of youth welfare offices. However, qualitative studies provide a number of indications on the importance of teamwork, on explicit and implicit ways of acting as well as on decision-making practices (sense-making) of professionals in child protection. These aspects were largely limited by the lockdowns and the pandemic-related protective measures.

Background: The UK was the first country to start national COVID-19 vaccination programmes, initially administering doses 3 weeks apart. However, early evidence of high vaccine effectiveness after the first dose and the emergence of the SARS-CoV-2 alpha variant prompted the UK to extend the interval between doses to 12 weeks. In this study, we aimed to quantify the effect of delaying the second vaccine dose in England.

[Ru(bipyridine)(nicotinamide)] (1) and its monoaqua-complex [Ru(bipyridine)(nicotinamide)(HO)] (2) were spectroscopically studied for the first time in the gas phase by static and time resolved UV photodissociation spectroscopy, observing nicotinamide and HO ligand dissociation for 1 and 2, respectively. Both processes and their ultrafast dynamics were investigated in parallel by transient absorption spectroscopy in aqueous solution. The latter data were newly acquired for the long-wavelength MLCT band excitation of 1 and provide novel ultrafast ligand dissociation results for 2, confirming the gas phase results, , exclusive HO cleavage over nicotinamide loss.

In this paper, we perform a mathematical analysis of our proposed nonlinear, multiscale mathematical model of physiologically structured quiescent and proliferating cell populations at the macroscale and cell-cycle proteins at the microscale. Cell cycle dynamics (microscale) are driven by growth factors derived from the total cell population of quiescent and proliferating cells. Cell-cycle protein concentrations, on the other hand, determine the rates of transition between the two subpopulations.
