We present the first observation of vibrational transitions in the [HO] anion, an intermediate in the anion-molecule reaction of water, HO, and hydride, H, using a laser-induced isotopic H/D exchange reaction action spectroscopy scheme applied to anions. The observed bands are assigned as the fundamental and first overtone of the HO-H vibrational stretching mode, based on anharmonic calculations within the vibrational perturbation theory and vibrational configuration interaction. Although the DO·D species has the lowest energy, our experiments confirm the DO·H isotope to be a sink of the H/D exchange reaction.

Recent studies have shown that elevated concentrations of unconjugated bilirubin (UCB) may be a protective host factor against the development of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), whereas low levels of UCB are associated with the opposite effect. The results of this European study, in which 2,489 samples were tested for their UCB concentration using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and additional data from the MARK-AGE database were used for analysis, provide further evidence that elevated UCB concentrations are linked to a lower risk of developing NCDs and may act as a predictive marker of biological aging as individuals with elevated UCB concentrations showed favorable outcomes in metabolic health and oxidative-stress-related biomarkers. These findings underline the significance of studying individuals with moderate hyperbilirubinemia and investigate UCB routinely, also in the setting of aging, since this condition affects millions of people worldwide but has been underrepresented in clinical research and practice until now.

A panel of 24 international experts met in July 2022 to discuss challenges associated with pertussis detection, monitoring, and vaccination in adults; conclusions from this meeting are presented. There has been a shift in the epidemiology of pertussis toward older children and adults. This shift has been attributed to the waning of infection- or vaccine-induced immunity, newer detection techniques causing detection bias, and possibly the replacement of whole-cell pertussis with acellular vaccines in high-income countries, which may lead to immunity waning more quickly.

Spectroscopic investigation of size-dependent CO binding on cationic copper clusters: analysis of the CO asymmetric stretch.

Photofragmentation spectroscopy, combined with quantum chemical computations, was employed to investigate the position of the asymmetric CO stretch in cold, He-tagged Cu[CO] ( = 1-10) and Cu[CO][HO] ( = 1-7) complexes. A blue shift in the band position was observed compared to the free CO molecule for Cu[CO] complexes. Furthermore, this shift was found to exhibit a notable dependence on cluster size, progressively redshifting with increasing cluster size.

We model temperature-dependent blackbody infrared radiative dissociation (BIRD) rate coefficients of Ag(HO) , = 4-6, a system with loosely bound water molecules. We employ a master equation modeling (MEM) approach with consideration of absorption and emission of blackbody radiation, comparing single and multiple-well descriptions. The unimolecular dissociation rate coefficients are obtained using the Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus (RRKM) theory, employing two approaches to model the sum of states in the transition state, the rigid activated complex (RAC) and the phase space limit (PSL) approach.

2-Bromo-1-(3,3-dinitroazetidin-1-yl)ethan-1-one (RRx-001) is a hypoxic cell chemotherapeutics with already demonstrated synergism in combined chemo-radiation therapy. The interaction of the compound with secondary low-energy electrons formed in large amounts during the physico-chemical phase of the irradiation may lead to these synergistic effects. In the Serial Reaction Time Task, participants respond to several stimuli usually being unaware that the stimuli follow a predefined sequence while still learning the sequence. In the present study, we aimed to clearly separate explicit intentional learning from implicit incidental learning by either informing participants about all details of the sequence or not informing participants about the existence of the sequence. Further, we explored the influence of anticipatory cues during practice while anticipatory cues were either presented (extrinsically triggered anticipation) or not presented (self-reliant intrinsic anticipation).

Preservation of the breath sample integrity during storage and transport is one of the biggest challenges in off-line exhaled breath gas analysis. In this context, adsorbent tubes are frequently used as storage containers for use with analytical methods employing gas chromatography with mass spectrometric detection. The key objective of this short communication is to provide data on the recovery of selected breath volatiles from TenaxTA adsorbent tubes that were stored at -80 °C for up to 90 d.

Electron-rich pyridines with π donor groups at the position play an important role as nucleophiles in organocatalysis, but their ligand properties and utilization in coordination chemistry have received little attention. Herein, we report the synthesis of two electron-rich pyridines 1 and 2 bearing N-heterocyclic imine groups at the position and explore their coordination chemistry. Experimental and computational methods were used to assess the donor ability of the new pyridines showing that they are stronger donors than aminopyridines and guanidinyl pyridines, and that the nature of the N-heterocyclic backbone has a strong influence on the pyridine donor strength.

One major conundrum of modern microbiology is the large pangenome (gene pool) present in microbes, which is much larger than those found in complex organisms such as humans. Here, we argue that this diversity of gene pools carried by different strains is maintained largely due to the control exercised by viral predation. Viruses maintain a high strain diversity through time that we describe as constant-diversity equilibrium, preventing the hoarding of resources by specific clones.

Wetting and emergence of long-range couplings in arrays of fluid cells.

Critical wetting is of crucial importance for the phase behavior of a simple fluid or Ising magnet confined between walls that exert opposing surface fields so that one wall favors liquid (spin up), while the other favors gas (spin down). We show that arrays of boxes filled with fluid and linked by channels with appropriately chosen opposing walls can exhibit long-range cooperative effects on a length scale far exceeding the bulk correlation length. We give the theoretical foundations of these long-range couplings by using a lattice gas (Ising model) description of a system.

A combination of searches for a new resonance decaying into a Higgs boson pair is presented, using up to 139  fb^{-1} of pp collision data at sqrt[s]=13  TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The combination includes searches performed in three decay channels: bb[over ¯]bb[over ¯], bb[over ¯]τ^{+}τ^{-}, and bb[over ¯]γγ. No excess above the expected Standard Model background is observed and upper limits are set at the 95% confidence level on the production cross section of Higgs boson pairs originating from the decay of a narrow scalar resonance with mass in the range 251 GeV-5 TeV.
